My wife and I stayed at Hotel Tara for 2 nights before our trek and for 4 nights after. The hotel is modern, clean, and has a great staff. The rooms are comfortable with a small balcony and very small television with lots of channels (including a few English language channels). The AC is quiet and works by remote control, and the free wifi works in the room.
The location is in the southern part of Lakeside, which is a little quieter than the northern part. The hotel is on a rocky side street with almost no traffic. It’s an easy walk to the main street with all the shops, restaurants, and the lake.
The hotel owner, Dilip, is excellent. He arranged a 10 day trek for us, and it couldn’t have been easier. He gave us some great advice about where to go, arranged a guide and porter for us, took care of all the permits, and arranged the hotel car to drop us off in Nayapul (about an hour away) and a taxi to pick us up and return us to the hotel. His prices were fair, and he was very clear about his commission (also very fair). Dilip is always around the hotel and seems genuinely interested in the guests and in training his staff.
As other reviewers have mentioned, there isn’t an elevator, so request a room on a lower floor if that bothers you. We stayed on the 5th and 6th (top) floor and it wasn’t a big deal. The views of the mountains and lake were pretty good on the higher floors. There’s only one option for the free, included breakfast, but they have other things on the menu too.
For the price, you really can’t go wrong with Hotel Tara. If want to go trekking, let Dilip arrange everything for you—he makes it very easy. And if you are looking for an excellent guide, ask for Ganesh Thapa—he was excellent.
