“Basic budget accommodation”
Reviewed 5 November 2012

We spent two nights at the Confucius Inn in October 2011. As we had spent quite a lot of money on accommodation in Kenting, we decided to stay at this budget hotel.
Service was okay and the rooms are nothing to write home about (old-fashioned, basic furniture). Everything was quite clean, but breakfast was rather disappointing (however, there are some bakeries and a small supermarket in the vicinity).
The Confucius Inn is close to the Confucius temple and we could see the park from our room.
By feet it takes about 15-20 minutes to get there from the train station, but once you find out which bus to take it's easy to reach.

I stayed at this hotel a couple of nights ago. The guidebook I had recommended it fairly highly. I might have had doubts when I walked in the lobby...it looked like someone's rec room undergoing renovations. Still, the front desk clerk was efficient, spoke some English & check in didn't take more than 2 minutes. I ordered the most basic room and despite its size, it didn't come cheap. 1400 NT, whereas the same room in a nondescript locale in a nondescript Taiwanese city might go for half that price. A couple could spend the night there but they'd be bumping into one another. The room was clean, with basic AC and TV and a shower/bathtub. Basic toiletries are provided. Beefy barbarians beware: the bathtub is made for Taiwanese frames, not Western ones. You could get stuck in the tub. How do I know? Don't ask....

The breakfast, contrary to what my guidebook told me, is nothing to rave about. Instant coffee, paper plates! No Western foods and although it's billed as open from 7-10, if you arrive after 8, the pickings are slim.

Location, location, location. That's the real reason to spend extra coin & stay here. If you check in in the early pm, you can quickly freshen up and knock off 4 of the major sights by suppertime. The next day (assuming you're travelling light with a knapsack), you can check out & knock off the rest of the major sights by suppertime.

If location is your prime consideration, spend a night here.

The Location of this Hotel it its bis advantage althought due to the reason its located on a big cross road the air is quite bad and its a bid loud so you cannot open the windows really. But except of this the place is great - great value, friendly staff, good breakfast, big rooms for Taiwan standards.

Confucius Inn, a short ride from the main railway station is centrally located at the heart of Tainan City, so we a bit concerned about traffic noise as we were checking in. However, the rooms turned out to be reasonably sound proof and outside noise was not an issue. The rooms are basic, but comfortable and clean, with a mattress placed on the floor (Japanese style). The bathrooms are better than you would expect from a hotel of this class and sufficiently supplied, including a hair dryer. As is generally the case in Taiwan, the staffs are friendly and try to be as helpful as they can within their language limitations.

The breakfast is served in the basement and is simple, but again, in Taiwan one is not too worried about eating in the hotel as eating houses and restaurants are ubiquitous wherever you go. This is also true with Confucius Inn. Within a fifteen minutes walk we discovered, in addition to the local fare, all different cuisine, from curry to vegan from Italian to burgers. The grocery outlet diagonally opposite the hotel apparently has the best ‘siomai’ (steamed stuffed buns), attested by the queue in front, and personal tasting. Coffee bars also abound serving surprisingly good coffee. The hotel also has a coffee bar that serves very good lattes and cappuccinos.

The location of the hotel allows one to take in most of the cultural and historical highlights the town has to offer on foot, especially the temples for which Tainan is well known. The major temples can be visited on foot in a couple of hours (the hotel sits opposite the Confucius Temple, and probably hence the name).

In summary, Confucius Inn is not (and does not pretend to be) a luxury option, but offers a sufficiently safe, convenient and clean abode at a reasonable price for exploring Tainan.

We chose this place, like the other poster, from a recommendation in a popular guide book. The book raved about the breakfast...the hotel has had to change this because of the cost of providing 'a hearty western breakfast'. The Chinese breakfast is ok but the real bonus of this hotel is its great location near the historical sites, outside you can take the bus number 2 to Anping and see more sights there. The cafe is great for coffee and the rooms were clean and large and good value. Easily could accomodate 4 people in the two double beds. A sound choice for Tainan and not far from the train station.

Stayed 2 nights as part of a self drive tour of Taiwan. This is a great value hotel right in the centre of town. Room was small with a fridge and A/C, bathroom was modern and function and bed comfortable. Reception staff spoke reasonable english and were helpful. Breakfast only OK. We booked direct having seen the hotel recommended by a well known travel guide. Only paid NT$1700 per night including breakfast which represented great value. Also known as Tainan teachers Hostel and is a sister hotel of the Cambridge. Has a website but not in english and booking direct by email was fairly straightforward. Credit cards accepted. Car parking right outside the hotel wsa a bonus
