“Central location, great hotel for visiting major sights”
Reviewed 3 March 2009

I stayed here on a recent trip and was delightfully surprised. The hotel was just about 6 months old when I stayed there. The room I stayed in was spacious and comfortable. It was perfect for a solo traveler. The room had elements of modern design. There are some features that would not be good for families with small children or older travelers, such as the bathroom and the split level from the entrance to the sleeping area. Overall, the room was beyond my expectations. The staff was incredibly friendly and responsive. They were eager to help. The breakfast buffet was better than I expected. They offered a good selection of breakfast options, including fresh fruits, breads and pastries, cold and hot foods. The location of the hotel, being centrally located, is very convenient especially for tourists who want to visit the major sights. Taipei 101 and The National Palace Museum were just a few stops away on the MRT. I was very satisfied with my stay at Hotel Eight Zone. I would definitely stay there again on my next visit to Taipei.

Stayed here for a weekend retreat. This one tries hard to be a Taipei version of Jia Hong Kong/Dream Hotel New York-type hotel. (Even the lobby soundtrack seems heavily borrowed from a certain trendy boutique hotel in Hong Kong.)

The executive room was big and spacious, with a nice shower, tub, etc. There was no mirror, however. You can see yourself in the black glass above the sink and it is ok for shaving, but I would think it would not be ideal for a lady traveler doing her makeup. Not sure if other rooms have mirrors or not. Like many new hotels in Taipei these days, there are only glass doors for the toilet, shower, etc., so this might not be the best place to stay with Aunt Ida.

There are traces of cheap workmanship in the room. The shower light burnt out (the place has only been open for a few weeks). Some of the cupboards and drawers reveal groups of wires, etc.--probably not a good idea for people with curious children. Lack of a regular mirror (unless there was one hidden somewhere) and the jumbled wires in cabinets lowers their score, as far as I am concerned.

The staff was pleasant, professional and spoke competent English. The rooms are soundproofed very well and have free Internet. The location is good--just a few minutes walk to the subway, across the street from the Huashan Arts center, etc., and also not far from the train station. The neighborhood is a bit more pleasant than around the train station a few minutes down the road. The breakfast buffet was fine. All in all, I would stay here again--not bad for USD 100.

  • Liked — Good location, trendy design
  • Disliked — Lack of a mirror in room, cheap amenities such as soap, etc.
