“wonderful!! almost don't want to leave!”
Reviewed 28 January 2010

ok I haven't even had a chance to upload my Eclat photos and this is only the 2nd of 3 nights at the hotel, but here I'm using the hotel's free wi fi (on both my laptop & iphone) and really enjoying the room, so here it goes...

I normally always stay at corporate hotels for work (Sherwood, Grand Hyatt, Shangri-la Far Eastern) but for this biz trip most rooms are taken up and the non corporate rate rooms are super expensive, at the same time, a super picky and well traveled girlfriend recommended this hotel and even had her assistant book 3 rooms for me & two of my colleagues (who also travel to Taiwan all the time). (We were all gushing over this place as we had breakfast this morning)

We got our rooms at the same rate that we would pay for at the other corp hotels

the pros:
1) good location, walking distance to some of my favorite restaurants, 10 min cab ride away to our office which is in the newest district in Taipei, with the new Bella Vista shopping center/ the new robuchon restaurant & etc
2) the room: oh where do I start, really nice bathroom, 3 types of showerheads to choose from, the Jpn style Toyo toilet (warm toilet seats etc), Ferragamo toiletries (and not just your usual shampoo & conditioners), B&O stereo system, automatic curtains, neopresso machine, designer furniture & lighting, free mini bar etc
3) food: did not and will not try their Cantonese restaurant (I am from HK, not going to have Canto food in Taipei!) but the breakfast here is great, no dry overcooked food a la corp hotel buffet style

the cons
1) George- the bar, only opens at 5:30 pm
2) the rooms (incl bathroom) are small, but no smaller than the ones in Europe
3) they should have a pillow menu (or maybe they have one & I just don't know) but the pillows are bit on the hard side for me

do I like this place, hell ya, enough that I booked another 2 nights for a repeat trip next week.

i just came back from my stay in eclat and was disappointed...very disappointed. Firstly, to start the pricing of the hotel is not cheap...with this amount, i could have stayed somewhere more luxury. This is supposed to be a small luxury hotel. Secondly, as this is a newly renovated this hotel (just last year), i am shocked with the condition of the hotel - the reception/breakfast area/ public areas seemed to be kinda old - carpets and furniture appeared scruffy and there is this musty smell. To be fair, the guest room is newly done up ..and bath area is quite nice. However, the maintenance is quite bad - as the floor has lots of scratch marks. The daily make-up room service is also quite patchy - as certain areas are not clean up.

Thirdly, most boutique hotels of the same price range appears to have an all day lounge with drinks/snacks and internet access (couple of computers provided in the lounge) ...but eclat's lounge is only available from 5 to 8 pm and very tiny...Also, no computers available.

Lastly, the location of the hotel is not that good for a leisure traveller...kinda quiet. not a shopping/food area...You need to take cab everywhere.

Sigh. should have stayed elsewhere.

I called long distant call to make reservation, they promised to get back on the e-mail with the best available price, but never heard from the Hotel Eclat anymore. When I called, they did not even ask my contact details, Terrible Service. Of course, I will avoid this hotel in the future. I doubt if the good comments are all made up by their employees.

We reserved a limousine pickup from the airport and we didn't quite expect a brand new 2009 S500. That's right. The car smells brand new and the driver greeted us with white gloves at the airport. To top that off, bottled water and both local and international newspapers were provided in the car. All these for about USD$70 and the journey was about 45 to 50min. There is no way one can ride in a S500 for that price in the US for that long.

When we arrived, we were immediately greeted by the check-in staff. Everything was ready for us and we were shown the room right away. The actual check-in process was done in the room.

Branded amenities everywhere. Mont blanc, Bang & Olufsen, Ferragamo, Nepresso, Starck, full automatic Toto etc. Totally unbelievable. The thing is this room actually calls for about USD$320 a night. But then again who pays for retail prices these days? We got a cool deal for half the price.

Did I mention the hotel is located next to a LV store?

And yes, those art pieces you see in the lobby are REAL pieces by the REAL artists. There were couple of Dali sculptures that flanked the two elevators.

There will always be 2 taxis ready for you at the door. No special rates. MTR (subway) wise will require a bit of a walk. About 15mins walk north to Zhong Xiao Dun Hua station and 7mins walk west to DaAn.

This hotel is also within walking distance (10mins) to one of the more famous night markets called Tong Hua Night Market.

There is no fitness center but if needed, the hotel will provide vouchers for free access to the nearest California Fitness, which is about 7 mins west of the hotel.

That being said, there was however one disappointment: The breakfast. Not buffet btw, more of an a la carte menu. Western, Chinese and Japanese. There is of course the usual juices, breads, fruits, cereals. Free breakfast doesn't have to be less than quality breakfast. Not expecting caviar or shark's fin but the basic scrambled eggs, omelettes are really quite bad. The Japanese breakfast was a sparse set of grilled salmon, pickles and a bowl of rice. The Chinese breakfast was congee with some pan fried noodles.

And here's the rather oxymoron thing about what to eat for breakfast at this hotel. You're in Taipei where literally you have food surrounding you everywhere. Congee is traditionally more of a Cantonese breakfast and even by that, this hotel serves pretty bad Chinese breakfast. Japanese breakfast seems totally out of place. And it leaves us with Western breakfast, which is horrible like I said.

They should at least serve a more refined version of what Taiwanese eat for breakfast. Sample of dumplings, paos, soy bean milk and onion pancakes of that sort.
