“So wonderful!”
Reviewed 26 January 2008

The Grand Hyatt in Taipei was such a a wonderful experience. The hotel itself is beautiful, clean and spacious. It's location is key because it is right next door to Taipei 101 and for those who like to shop, it is heaven! Plus, the eatery at the basement of Taipei 101 is great when you want inexpensive food. The food a the Grand Hyatt is pricey.
The staff at the hotel was so accomodating. Everything there is first class.
There is also a shuttle bus that picks people up to go to the airport every half an hour for a small fee, which adds to the hotel's overall convenience.
Highly suggest this hotel.

I have stayed at the Grand Hyatt Taipei many, many times. OK, more than 50 times over the years. It is NOT haunted like a lot of superstitious Asians claim.

The hotel is a bit old, as there has only been a few top hotels opening up in the city in the last 15 years. However, it still has an edge over the others because:

- it is next to Taipei's World Trade Center, so convenient for business travelers
- it is relatively large in terms of rooms available
- it has one of the largest hotel ballrooms in Taipei, so often a good
choice as a function/wedding venue
- it is next to Taipei 101, and close to numerous shopping venues

The decor of the rooms are not uniform. Some rooms on the lower floors
are more dated than the ones on higher floors. The rooms close to the elevators (and on the same side) tend to be the larger rooms.

The newly renovated suites on the higher floors (Grand Club floors I think) are absolutely fabulous. On my 50th stay at the hotel, I was upgraded to one of these suites and everything in the kitchenette (including alcohol) was complimentary. I immediately called up a few friends and had a party in my suite...

The hotel has a few decent restaurants - in particular the Shanghainese as well as the seafood restaurant. The cafe serves an awesome buffet

As usual the nightclub at the Hyatt is a place for foreign businessmen
to look for companionship....

I prefer this over the Far Eastern (Shangri-la) or the Westin.

Have stayed at the Grand Hyatt Taipei twice in the last month, once in a Club Suite and once in a Club Exec room.

Likes:
- Great Breakfasts in the Club Lounge
- Good size rooms
- Clean with nice (standard Hyatt) amenities
- Best location in Taipei next to 101 and a couple of mins from MRT.
- Good pool area
- Amazing Lobby
- Very friendly staff

Dislikes:
- Lounge serves alcohol for only two hours a night. By the time you've finished work it's just about over. Definitely below expectations here.
- Concierge isn't a real concierge, can give you a map but can't find anything for you. I needed a Taiwanese flag for a presentation and ended up getting the Amex Concierge to find one for me as there suggestion was to goto the night markets.
- If you want them to post a letter for you bring cash as they charge a surcharge if you want to add it to your bill.

Overall this is a very nice hotel and definitely one of the better ones in Taipei, just a few small things they need to work on to compete with similar in Tokyo, Hong Kong or Singapore. Will be staying here again.

PS If you're booking through Amex FHR make sure you get all the benefit when you check-in. Also not all rooms are eligible for the FHR benefits so check before booking!

I have stayed here a few times and like it.The lobby is spectacular, the restaurants are good here, the bar is funky and lively and it is beside the Taipei 101 tower with all its shops and restaurants/food outlets (a very good italian place on the 4th floor,I think). The rooms are minimalist by design, beds are comfy and amenities in the bathroom good. The hotel could probably do with a few updates in the rooms and bathrooms are slightly worn at this stage. The club floor is very nice and the staff are very professional. The new gym was under construction when I was there this time. There is a nice outdoor, heated pool also.I would recommend this hotel.I have stayed at the Westin and The Far Eastern Plaza.I would say the Far Eastern Plaza is best folllowed by the Grand Hyatt with the Westin third.

I haven't stayed at a Hyatt in a long time, but remembered it to be a better hotel than this one.

Check-in took way too long, and felt even longer than usual because I was jetlagged. The Hyatt should find a way to do express check-in. They ran out of non-smoking rooms so upgraded me to an executive floor. The room seemed bigger than a standard room, but there was hardly anymore detail that was worth mentioning. The room was sparsely furnished, and the furnishing was old. The TV was an old style CRT, maybe 27" whereas TVs in most upscale Asian hotels these days are bigger, widescreen, and flat.

One of the pictures on the wall had unhinged and was crooked. The lighting control on the nightstand was dusty. The room was very cold when I arrived. These are all details that I would not have expected in a premium room in a 5 star hotel.

I had in-room dining for both a midnight snack and breakfast. Both were quite excellent, and I appreciated the 24 hour menu.

For a 5 star hotel, we a bitterly disappointed with this hotel.

It mainly has to do with the service. For starters, upon check in, there are no porters to help you with your luggage to your room, while
i've found that there are many employees standing around in the lobby,
doing nothing, and when we leave the hotel via the main entrance, the doormen will see us coming, but they will walk away and not open the doors for us.

Also, the decor looks very dated. The room corridors look like someone had thrown up light wood panelling. Plus the insulation of the room door is weak, as we awake to the noise of our neighbours talking in the corridor each morning, or the room cleaning ladies.

While the rooms are clean and we get fresh fruit and bottled water every day, at around 9.30am, we can smell the exhaust fumes from the buffet breakfast downstairs as i suppose our air conditioning duct and the exhaust duct are located close to one another. Not a nice smell to wake up to each morning, if i may say so.

In summarising, i will only stay here again if it was the last hotel in it's class that was available in Taipei. I have stayed in 4 star hotels that have had better service than here.

  • Liked — Water pressure is fantastic, fresh fruit, cleaniness
  • Disliked — staff service, internet charges, exhaust smell in our room every morning

The lobby provides a "wow" factor in the beauty of fountains and flowers with a sky high ceiling. Once arriving to our room, however, we were sadly disappointed in the quality and aesthetics for the nightly rate. Rust stains on the shower tile, modest furnishing, and a small motel-like TV with stand are a few aspects in much need of upgrade.
Still, the staff is top-notch and the food in the cafe is wonderful. This morning I had the best croissant of my life and it was whole wheat, too!
