“Excellent location well linked to other parts of the city”
Reviewed 9 August 2011

This hotel is located very near to the ShuangLiang MRT station on the DanShui (red) line. From the Taoyuan Airport, the ChangRong (Evergreen) bus stops very near to the hotel on the same side of the road.

The room is clean and some toiletries and slippers are provided. However, the double bed room is a little small for 2 person. After putting 2 suitcases, walking space is limited. From the hotel webpage, the twin room looks more spacious, albeit more costly.

In the breakfast room, there are 2 computers with internet connection. In the room, I could also tap on high-speed wireless easily.

Hotel staff are quite friendly and helpful with directions to places of interests.

Breakfast is Chinese - porridge, rice and some dishes, or Western - toast, eggs and ham. The dishes are varied every morning, but the eggs, ham and toast are the same. This might be boring for those who do not take Chinese breakfast. Neverthelsss, there are bakeries and a Starbucks, as wells as restaurants nearby. If these are insufficient, a walk away to the next MRT station will find even more choices!

The hotel is also very conveniently located to the Ning Xia night market (about 15min walk) and buses to other parts of the city, eg. bus #260 to YangMingShan.

The Shin Shih hotel is a decent stay if you are traveling on a budget. The staff are very polite and accomadating. They were very helpful in directing us to the local bars, restaurants, shopping areas and night markets. The location of the hotel is fantastic. Tons of restaurants and shops nearby. Hotel is located beside a police station (which made us feel quite safe). directly across the street there is a starbucks and a hospital. Hotel is one block from a metro station and approx. 3 blocks from a night market.

However old and somewhat dingy, the hotel is very clean and comfertable. Rooms are relatively small, but include an in room safe, air conditioning, fridge (stocked daily with bottled water), toiletries replenished daily (including: 2 toothbushes, 2 razorz, hand soap, toothepaste and mouthwash), plasma television (with english movie channels), free wifi. Oddly, there was a sign beside our toilet stating that it is prohibited to flush bathroom tissue down the toilet. Having not seen this anywhere else in taipei, we decide to go ahead and do it anyway and there were no issues. Improvement is needed soundproofing the rooms, as it is quite easy to hear what is going on outside, in the hallway and in the parallel hotel rooms.

Tours are available for booking at the front desk (which i highly recommend), free breakfast buffet consisting of eggs, pancakes, coffee and fresh fruits are free daily to hotel patrons. Hotel also has computers in the lobby with free internet and Skype for its patrons.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel to those traveling solo or with friends, or those on a budget, but not for those looking for a romantic getaway or those with five star tastes.

My recent stay at Shin Shih hotel has been quite shocking although I’ve read through the reviews; I was not at all well prepared for this. The outside states SITI hotel and the entrance is through their café. In fact Google street view gives a very good idea of the location and surrounds.
In General
A small budget hotel ideal for short stays and very convenient as it is only 100m from the MRT station and underground shopping street. For book and anime lovers, the underground shopping street is heaven. There is 1 shop there that sells by complete sets the capsule toys. You need not have to worry too as there are many eateries within a 100m radius. The MOS burgers are good and worth a try and the closest is 50m away. The staff speaks a little English, but it is best you converse with them in Chinese. The hotel has only 1 lift so be ready to wait a little longer during peak seasons. One privilege for guest, the café has a coffee machine that dispenses very good coffee throughout the day for free.
Rooms
The rooms are very small, but well fitted. Our family had a triple sharing room and it had a Jacuzzi in the bath, what a lux for such a small hotel. Best of all, we even had a good sized LCD TV and free WiFi. The room is clean and comfortable and comes with the usual toiletries, safe, mini bar, etc. The cool air-condition is a nice and cool especially after coming back after a hectic day. If you were to get a room, please ask for one that is not facing the main road as it can be very noisy. Staffs are very attentive and handle our request well. However if you do use their laundry service, be prepared to wait awhile or even have to chase them as it seem they contract out this service.
Restaurant
There are no restaurants only a café that serves daily breakfast. Breakfast is simple but palatable with a mix of Chinese and Western fare.
Pricing
Very reasonable and if you stay 3 nights, you get a discounted rate of less NT100. It is very convenient to book on-line and response is rather quick. Upon checking in, be prepared that you will be expected to pay in advance for your entire stay.
Some helpful tips
Taipei has taxi tours and it is worth to go on a one day tour. It cost between NT3K to NT5K depending on where you wish to go. Visit the old mines, Old Street, the sea sculptures or light a wish lantern in the mountains would be a good experience. Have an excellent trip.

I stayed at the Shin-Shih Hotel, back in early Feb 2011. When I returned in June, they remembered me and greeted me with a look of rememberance. Super staff and very accomodating. Hotel and staff give the ammenities of a large Corporate hotel, but with the small hotel hospitality.
Very clean and comfortable.

This hotel was so incredibly terrible that it was almost comical. We checked in at 1am and were placed in a room on the 10th floor. An hour later, at 2am, the front desk operator (on the manager's command) called and told us that he had given us the wrong room and that we had to move rooms immediately. Confused and half-asleep, we at first agreed to move the next day if we could stay in our room for the first night. The front desk operator first agreed, and then again on the manager's command called back within 5 minutes and told is that it was not okay and that we had to leave that night because another patron was arriving for that room. My friend was on the phone for a while, and the front desk operator came up to our room and knocked at 2:10am to usher us out from our room. At the point I asked the front desk operator when the next patron was expected, and he told us 2:30am. Obviously this didn't make sense because the room had to be cleaned, but we didn't argue; we ignored him and my friend stayed on the phone. The front desk operator called another 5 minutes later and said we could stay in the room - we asked what happened to the other patron and he ignored the question.

We suspected that the manager was behind all of this but he never addressed us directly and we wanted to talk to him so we pointed at the manager and asked if he was in fact the manager, but the front desk operator, to save himself from getting in trouble, told us that he was a security guard. We were so frustrated with the lies about the patron, the manager, and the overall poor treatment (on top of the thoroughly unimpressive hotel), so we found a new hotel online. Before leaving the hotel, we called hotels.com who told us that we could get a full refund after putting in a cancellation, but that the online system was down so we couldn't cancel our reservations yet. We explained this to the front desk operator as we checked out and asked for a receipt of proof that we left that morning (4am), but he refused to give us a receipt until we placed a cancellation. He did however tell us that a full refund would be issued. Unsurprisingly, when hotels.com's system was up and we did place the cancellation, the hotel refused to give us a full refund and charged the first day.

We called the hotel back, and he spoke unintelligibly and hung up. Later that day, we returned to the hotel, and the same manager was there with a new front desk operator. She was polite, professional, and helpful, and thoroughly embarrassed by her own hotel when we explained the situation. She was extremely apologetic for her coworker's behavior, and did tell us that the manager was in fact a manager and not a security guard. She tried to help us out but claimed that the Expedia phone line gave no response, and so the situation could not be cleared up immediately.

Additionally, the manager refused to speak to us face to face - apparently a hotel policy is to call a phone on the other side of a curtain, and the manager answers in plain view instead of speaking to any customers. This may have been the worst-managed hotel I have ever encountered in my life. We were lied to repeatedly - about the second patron, about the manager being a security guard, and about getting a full refund. The hotel itself was dirty, ugly, dimly lit, and smelly. Its only redeeming factor was that its proximity to downtown was acceptable, but even the area was relatively shady. I strongly recommend AGAINST staying at this hotel for so many reasons.

I stayed here for 4 nights. Everything is great..except there is no window in the room !
I mean, there is one but the view is the other building 5 cms away, so you can't open it.
If you don't mind it, then please go ahead and stay here, you won't regret it. It was one of the cheapest options I had found, the location is excellent, near the MRT, close to main attractions in Taipei and close to the bus that will take you to the airport.
The room is a bit small, but comfortable and very clean. There is also complimentary bottles of water everyday, and the breakfast is not that bad after all. The staff is also very nice and helpful and speaks enough English.
Free wifi internet in the whole hotel !

Btw, the bed is great and because there is no real window, it gets very dark at night and you will sleep great !
I would stay here again !

Shin Shih Hotel is a great hotel for budget travel, as it is really good value for your money. The hotel and the rooms are very clean and have a good standard, however the furniture show some traces of age. The staff was very friendly and helpful and the breakfast buffet with a mix of Chinese and Western food was adequate.

As I stayed for 2 nights at the beginning of my trip and then again 2 nights at the end of it I had two different rooms, that differed in design greatly. While the first was a rather ugly mix of Western and Chinese style with dark marble tops, dark fabrics and dark wood, but with a nice bathtub, the second was in nice, bright Japanese style with sliding windows and light brown furniture, but with just a shower head in the bathroom, so there was water all over the floor after a taking a shower.

As I chose the cheaper "Superior Room" I was not surprised that both rooms had no real window, just a window giving out to a concrete wall only 15cm in front of it. The spaciousness of the rooms was OK for the price and the amenities were great: free WiFi, a kettle with tea and coffee, a huge LCD TV with a few English channels, slippers, bottled water in the mini bar and free toiletries.

The location is a big plus: only a short walk from MRT Shuanglian station (where the Evergreen bus drops you off from the airport, however it did not pick me up for going back to the airport so I ended up chasing the bus in a taxi until the next stop), across the street from a large hospital, next to a police station (so I definitely felt save as a female solo traveler) and in a lively area with lots of shops and eateries (also Starbucks and McDonalds).
