Recently stayed at le meridien , my second stay after a gap of three years, when the hotel was still fairly new. My first stay was very pleasant and was the reason for my return.
The hotel is still in good condition though signs of wear and tear, such as stains on carpets, pilling on sofas are beginning to appear. However, having said this the rooms and public areas are in pretty good condition.
We ordered the hotel limousine to pick us up at the airport and after a wait of ten minutes or so were taken to the hotel.
The check- in was reasonably efficient and the front of house staff and room staff are generally very professional and friendly. There was a coffee based welcome drink, but since I don't drink coffee I went without. No alternative was offered.
My room, 2201, a corner room with unusual round bed was good. The bed is very comfortable, but slightly impractical , especially if you need a drink of water during the night, or want to check the time on the clock. As the bed head wraps around the bed it's necessary to almost get out of bed to get a drink or look at the clock.
The bathroom is a great size and as well as having a tv speaker has a generously sized tub with plenty of hot water. The toiletries are the hotel's own brand and are ok. The rain shower had poor water pressure whereas the bath had great water pressure.
Housekeeping was fine, though after leaving the hotel one day at 10 am and returning after 3 pm the room had not been made up. Other days were fine, though used tea mugs weren't taken away when the room had been entered. I wouldn't bother asking for the turn down service, unless you want a short poem left on your pillow. No chocolate or flower here. I don't find pressing a button to close the shades a chore. Water was always replenished.
Bangkok is a hot city and for me good, efficient, working air conditioning is essential. I could not get my air to go below 24 c even though The thermostat allows you to set the temperature as low as 19 c. After two tries a technician was sent to the room and went into the ceiling by the door for several minutes and thankfully, the air could be regulated down to 21 c which made my stay entirely more pleasant. However, having to get a technician to override the system to achieve a comfortable temperature shouldn't be necessary in a city known for its heat.
Breakfast was not included in the room price and on three days we ate at the hotel restaurant, with a 800 baht buffet breakfast. There is a great variety of food but each day we encountered small problems, such as food not being replenished. I opened the bacon dish to find none left. I left the lid up to alert staff to the problem, but after 10 minutes still no bacon and the lid was still up. Another morning we had to ask three times for tea, and when it finally came the waitress brought two pots to the table and left the other one on a serving stand. I had to go and retrieve it myself. We had a cocktail in the bar one night. It was excellent.
Music in the lobby and hallways is too loud and obtrusive for my taste and that of my friends who stayed on the 20 th floor. Gym is very clean and well equipped and the pool is suitable for laps with a height of 4 feet throughout.
The hotel in some ways is quite generic. You could be anywhere in the world. The locations is good with a short taxi ride to any of the major attractions or shops.
