“10 minutes walking from Grand Palace, not helpful staff, but god price”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 May 2014

This hotel is located 10 minutes walking form the Grand Palace. Staff is rather uninterested in guests and will not provide you with any extra information except for room number and price unless you ask. In case you ask them to call you a taxi, they won’t, but someone will come out with you and stop one on the street. The swimming pool is closed, but they offer free transfer to another hotel located 5 minutes away (we did not go). Lobby looks nice and spacious, room is well maintained; however our first impression was disaster – when we entered the room it smelled so moist and moldy. We had to open the balcony door for a while and use A/C at the high speed, but it did get better..or we simply got used to it overnight. The room was clean and comfortable, it had a balcony, free safe in the closet and also minibar. Hairdryer was available in the rom. It is noisy at night as other reviews say, but if you close the balcony door, it’s not a big deal unless you are a really weak sleeper. The hotel restaurant has a river view and good food, I recommend it. Be very careful in this area!! Bangkok is a city full of scams, I recommend you read about the common scams online before you go, after that you will realize that 90% of the people you speak to are trying to cheat you. Don’t go to places they recommend, they recommend you to go to their friends businesses and rip you off. If anyone tells you the Grand Palace is closed, stay away from him and go to the Palace, you will see its open. Tuk tuks are a cheat, catch “tax-meter” taxis and ask them to turn the meter on, it should start at 35 THB – taxi is very cheap if you follow this rule, otherwise you not only pay a lot, but you can get in serious troubles you will regret. Good luck!

Room Tip: Plan your trip before coming to Bangkok, people there are not helpful like in other parts of Bangkok...

Next to the river stop. Perfect location to visit some of the most tourist attractions of Bangkok. Big spacious rooms with views over the river (quiter) and the street. Good selection of breakfast and dinner.

Overall, hotel was pretty good value for the money. We booked through Agoda at a rate of $38 a night (not including breakfast and service charge), but I don't think I would be satisfied if I had to pay any more than that. I know they sometimes try and charge as high as $60 a night, which is far too high for the quality of the hotel.

First the good:
-Large and comfortable beds
-Clean rooms
-Good AC
-Decent breakfast buffet
-Convenient location

Then the odd:
-The Electricity: Throughout our stay, the electricity in our room would continuously go out for 5-10 minute periods. Whenever we would call the reception, it would 'mysteriously' come back on, and they would often treat us with suspicion as if we were somehow making it up. It was not a building wide black out and seemed to be confined to our room. It happened so often it became a running joke between my girlfriend and I and we eventually resigned ourselves to just waiting them out.
-The Price: We originally booked the hotel for two nights online through Agoda, for 1200 baht. When I informed them that we wanted to extend our stay for two more nights, they told us the price would be 1800 baht. When I pressed them to give it to us for the same price, the girl told my that 1200 baht was 'impossible' and they never rent rooms for that price. After about 10 minutes of haggling in which they would not budge, I pulled out my smart phone and rebooked the room on Agoda for the same 1200 baht price. The girl seemed genuinely surprised and a little embarrassed, so I'm not sure where the disconnect came from. All in all it was a comical experience and we both left satisfied with the exchange. Immediately afterwards, however, I noticed them booking a group of Koreans for 1900 baht a night, so I guess it just depends on how much they think you're willing to pay.
-The Door: Since we first checked in, we had continuous problems with our electronic door key. Whenever we would have issues, they would just recode the keys, despite all evidence that that was not the real problem. They eventually sent a repair man up who spent about 20 minutes trying to open the door, only to eventually pull the lock open and replace the disposable batteries.
-Internet: In room internet is in existence, but extremely slow. Much better reception downstairs. It's ok since it was included in the room price, but there's now way I would have paid extra for it.
-The pool: The pool was under going construction while we there, which I was unaware of when we booked it. Fortunately, they offered free tuk tuk service to their partner hotel, which had an excellent rooftop pool. Definitely made up for the lack of pool here.

Despite the quirks, it is a nice hotel and the morning breakfast along the river is nice and the food is good. Beds and rooms are really comfortable, and its much nicer and less seedy than anything along Khao San or Rambuttri. Yes, you can book a dungeon in one of the Khao San hotels for less than 500 baht a night, but if you have a little extra cash and don't wish to sleep in a place that seems like it may try and harvest your organs, then Navalai is certainly not a bad place. Would definitely return at the same price.

Room Tip: Try to get a corner or river facing room. Street facing rooms will be really loud at night, particul...

Close to Rambuttri and Khao San. Walking distance to the Grand Palace and Sanam Luang which is a great park to relax or do some exercise in. The location is great, and if you get the river view, you'll avoid all the noise coming from the main street and watch the activity along Chao Phraya River unfold from your balcony.

The room itself wasn't anything too fancy, but the size was decent, had a balcony and the bed was comfortable.

Find out when their 2 for 1 cocktail specials are on and make your way to the rooftop pool to admire the drinks and views.

A nice place to stay if you want to stay near Khao San Road, when staying in Bangkok. Very friendly staff and nice, high standard rooms. Don't forget to enjoy the view from the rooftop swimming pool. Would love to stay at Navalai again!

Stayed here for 2 nights Jan /Feb. The location is excellent, walking distance to the grand palace and right near the kao sang road which has lots of market stalls, restaurants, bars and of course Thai massages! The rooms were large, clean and modern with a large double bed. Shower was excellent and powerful with plenty of complimentary toiletries. Breakfast was plentiful however, my only criticism was that on a very early start, the breakfast wasn't ready. It was suppose to start at 6am but they were still bringing it out at 6.30. The staff one in particular was very helpful. Answering all our questions, booking cruises for us and showing us locations. The hotel is right on the river with a roof top pool, shame we had no time here for a dip! All in all, very satisfied with everything and we would have no worries recommending this hotel.

A comfortabel mid range place to stay. Clean, spacious and nicely deco rooms. If with child(ren): book a river view room. In the evening you can sit at the balcony enjoying a river breeze while kids are a sleep. Breakfast is great. Staff efficient and friendly. Tuk Tuk to Koh Sarn Road: 5 minutes.
