“Wouldn't be my first choice”
Reviewed 5 February 2013

I spent two nights at Tuptim but honestly the second was only out of laziness at not wanting to move. The location is fun, super close to Khao San and lots of bars and restaurants on Rambuttri, but obviously this goes hand and hand with the noise factor. The bar next door had live music until quite late, the A/C in the room was incredibly loud and almost drowned it out except that it only had one setting and was freezing cold, much too cold after even 15 minutes. The rooms are very small and mine had a really funny musty smell, I'd get used to it after a few minutes of being in there but each time I entered I was once again put off by it. The lady at the front desk helped us to book a taxi to the airport early the last morning and my boyfriend paid without realizing that they took a 200 baht commission for themselves, pretty steep considering that getting to the airport is only 300. The free breakfast provided is just two pieces of toast and one tea or coffee. It all goes with the territory but for a few bucks more you can really stay somewhere much better in the same block.

Room Tip: My room was the first in the hall and very noisy, further down the hall might be a bit quieter.

The bathrooms and bedroom were cheap and clean. The road is next to Khao San but not on it which helps with noise. We slept very peacefully! It's definitely no frills and you can't really trust the staff for directions. The wifi worked for us. The hotel suited its purpose!

Also, we found it no problem! Which is more than I can say for the rest of the roads in Bangkok!

I'll be honest, we booked this place simply because it was cheap.

"You get what you pay for" is a horridly cliched phrase, but with that in mind we weren't expecting much.

Tuptim B&B was much better than we anticipated. Our double room was small and basic but very clean with air conditioning. The communal bathrooms were spotless and exceptionally well kept.

But that's where the good points end. Reception staff in hostels around the world are usually friendly and helpful. Here they gave the impression that they knew nothing about the area and thu couldn't even be bothered to tell us that.

The free breakfast consists of tea or coffee and two slices of toast. One day we had the sheer cheeky and audacity to ask for water instead of tea and were met with the most contemptuous no from the surly restaurant staff. They were constantly rude and did everything they could to make our stay an unhappy one.

Tuptim on Rambuttri Road is in a very busy area right near the Khao San Road. Bars are filled with western tourists until the small hours, and you'll definitely see more holidaymakers than locals.

We were warned in advance by some iffy reviews that the area was noisy. Anyone who writes this in a review either didn't do their research in advance or is foolish. If you want a quiet hotel, don't book the busiest street in town. That said, with the air conditioning roaring away we could hardly here the outside, it was fine.

Oh, and I should add the WiFi is terrible.

Cheap, decent rooms, terrible staff.

Stayed here on our 2nd trip to Bangkok. On rambuttri road which is far better than khao San. Nice place with very clean basic rooms. Shared bathroom was very clean with separate girls and boys facilities. Each bathroom has two toilet cubicles and two shower cubicles do plenty of space. Free water on arrival too which was nice. It was a little noisy but it was near Xmas and in general khao San and rambuttri roads were both way busier than our first trip in October.

Great place in the middle of action! BUT they should warn about the noise in the cheapest rooms (no sleep, sounds like you're inside a bar). When I made friends with a girl in one of those rooms and offered her to crash with me for some nights rest, they found out about in and wanted to charge more. Even though my friend offered to change rooms. Next night they actually knocked on the door to check where she was sleeping. Very unpleasant experience!!!! Overall you get what you pay for, with quiet guests and allot of night noise on the streetside

I have been to the Kao San area quite a few times and had always walked past thinking it looked charming. It's a very clean neat place, I got a single room with a shared bathroom which are immaculately clean and the rooms are very basic. The charm pretty much ends at the entrance. the only member of staff who was friendly was the cleaning lady, the receptionist was ok but not particularly warm or welcoming. There is a bar next door that has live music until very late, combined with the noise on the street, and the rattling air con, its incredibly noisy. So arriving after a long flight and no sleep in 24hrs, I was really really exhausted when I checked out 2 days later. The only area for guests to sit is in the restaurant out the front, so lacking any communal lounge area takes means there is very little atmosphere. It's an ok clean budget choice but I would only stay again if it was for 1 night Nd nothing else was available. the other side of Rambuttri is much better.

Room Tip: I stayed on the top floor and even that was noisy so if sleeping is important to you, think again!

Tuptim is in a great location one street over from the Khao San Road. There are heaps of bars and restaurants in the area. Beds are comfortable. Despite the live bands next door it was surprisingly quiet in the rooms. Speaking of live bands music lovers should note the pub next door (the 'Baramplu') has musicians a notch above the usual buskers. In particular look out for the 'blues couple' that play around 1930 to 2100 most nights. Worth staying at Tuptim just to see them.

The Tuptim restaurant does good burgers. My only criticism is during the day they should keep the music a bit quieter. It is a bit much listening to ''Gangnam Style' while using your laptop. The restaurant balcony is similar in style to a 'Queenslander'. Very nice looking.

Tuptim has a good environment for couples and single female travelers. The guys who want to re-enact 'The Hangover II' probably need to look elsewhere.

Finally the staff and management were friendly and helpful.
