“A fantastic experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 3 November 2009

I just spent 7 days over 3 periods within 2 weeks at Ariyasomvilla. First time we arrived we were greeted with the warmest welcome from the staff and from the Managing Director Mr David Lees. They made us feel at home right away and we had no doubt that if we were going back to Bangkok this would be the place to stay. After 2 days we went to Hua Hin, we didn’t like it enough to stay longer and decided to go back to Bangkok. We called the hotel and even though we knew they were fully booked, Mr Lees made sure to accommodate us for that one night before we went to Chiang Mai. The same thing happened again when we decided to go back from Northern Thailand. Once again he made sure we had a roof over our heads and every time we showed up, it felt like coming home. We were always greeted with big smiles and a genuine interest in our well being from all of the employees.

Even though this is a small family owned hotel, it is big in so many ways. The hotel has a lot of charm and heart. It is a beautiful original traditional Thai style villa, built around the original 1942 residence. The rooms ( I stayed in a few ) are all spacious, beautifully decorated with old teak wood furniture and very clean. All rooms have wi-fi access, complimentary water and every day you receive the daily news paper. The breakfast is great with a wonderful selection of pretty much anything, and if you want something off the menu it never seemed to be a problem. The restaurant Na Aroon serves superb vegetarian and seafood dishes for lunch and dinner.
At the hotel you will also find a spacious library with computer access and of course they also have a top professional Spa.

This is absolutely a green oasis in the middle of Bangkok. This is truly a place you can retreat to after a busy day on the streets of Bangkok. To be able to sit in a quiet green tropical garden surrounded by palm trees, a beautiful pool, a wonderful building and friendly staff, knowing that you’re just a stone throw away from Sukhumvit, sky train and all the traffic just takes your breath away.

I will definitely recommend Ariyasomvilla to others. And I have no doubt that I will come back as well

Original portion of the building has charm. Mod cons in room are well integrated. Wooden structure of original building adds warmth.

Some of the front staff are indifferent at best, bordering on rude. Room (309) had leaks in ceiling during rain. Wifi basically useless - not able to reliably connect in 48hrs. Room was noisy because directly over dining room and older structure has no sound proofing - breakfast starts @ 6:30 and you could hear it.

While the manager, David, was kind and a redeeming quality to the hotel, we started off with a bad experience on checkin. The staff who checked us in did not greet us but just asked "are you checking in?" there was no courtesy and no attempt to interact other than to get us processed. There was no welcome, no explanation about the hotel or services. It was up to us to find out - what time is breakfast? where is it served? When shown to the room there was no explanation about where things were or how they worked. The room had a window out on to the hallway - the light in the hall was left on all night making the room bright all night - apparently the guest is responsible to shut off the hall lights.

The older portion of the building was interesting, and had a lot of character and charm but be warned that the walls in the old section have little to no insulation so it can be very noisy. Also, during some heavy rain, our room had several leaks from the ceiling.

Were the service more even, it would have had a better review, but with many hotels with better service in this price range (Tenface, Luxx XL, Davis, etc.) it's unlikely we'll return.

Dear Konoyaro,
Thanks for your review and I'm just sorry that you had a less than pleasant experience with us. Seems we "dropped the ball" in your case. You've identified our weakness and we're going to have try harder in those areas and put things right.

Apologies again and it's always good to know the facts - so thanks.

We chose this hotel for few nights in Bangkok after a trip to Australia. As a regular business traveller, I avoid the large chain hotels when travelling for pleasure. I selected this place for myself, husband and 10 year old son because it offered a local, personal feel but also provided certain amenities which would make family happy (free high speed wi-fi and swimming pool, principally). This hotel is clearly more than just a business venture for the British ex-pat owner - built on an extension of a property owned by his wife's family, it is also clear the owners both understand and love Thailand as well as how to run a hotel. We had a beautiful large bedroom with a bathroom bigger than the average London sitting room. Rooms are set around an elegant quiet courtyard, a contrast to the bustle of the local Soi which houses a large international hospital. Food was delicious with both western and thai food available at all meals. Impeccable Thai staff. Gracious and knowledgeable owners. The kindness extended to making sure we were collected at the airport (very handy when you arrive at midnight in a sweaty heap) through to allowing us to retain our room til evening on the day or departure in order for us to freshen up after a day at the market. Location was very convenient - drive to airport was quick - and importantly for Bangkok - traffic free - since hotel is near to expressway. During stay, Skytrain (BTS) station Phloenchit is a very short walk away. You would do very well to stay here, either on business or on vacation.

I came here already 3 times and I enjoyed each time my stay. This place is an an oasis in Sukhumvit. Nice colonial style building with garden and swimming pool. Large and very clean rooms. Vegetarian restaurant and a nice english breakfast. Very good massage at the Spa. Close to the skytrain, the klong to old bangkok and the airport highway. Last but not least, a kind stafff and a sympathic manager

My fiancee and I stayed here for several nights when stopping in Bangkok on our way to and from Bali. It was wonderful to have such a beautiful, quiet, safe and tranquil place to relax in the otherwise hectic city.

The rooms were nearly silent. They were constructed solidly and no noise was heard through the walls or ceilings. The only noise we heard were the croaking of frogs in the morning.

The beds were the most luxurious we slept in on the entire trip. I meant to ask the owner where he bought the sheets, so we could get some for ourselves. They were so soft!

The bathrooms were beautiful as well. The first room we stayed in had a bathroom larger than most hotel rooms and they were tastefully designed wit many natural materials and stone. The large bath was mightily appreciated after the 24 hours of travel to get there.

The large flat screen TV had HBO, CNN, Cinemax and other english-language channels. They had fast WiFi, powerful A/C, and all the room controls were accessible from a panel near the bed. It would be a perfect place to veg out for a week.

And speaking of veg, the food they serve is all vegetarian and of the highest quality. They have great faux bacon and sausage, so you won't miss your meat.

The pool was also wonderful for a dip after a hard day of sightseeing. The jacuzzi was huge and fun, though it would have been nicer if it was heated. But being in bangkok, a cool jacuzzi is probably what most people want.

The location was good. Although it was not in the heart of the old city, it was very close to many sights and it was easy to hop on the elevated train line to get anywhere in the city very quickly. We didn't, but you could also have taken a public ferry boat from the canal that runs behind the hotel. Note that traffic is very bad in Bangkok during peak times, so either a motor scooter or public transportation (trains/boats) are your best bet to avoid the gridlock.

Getting to/from the airport was very easy. The end of the road that the hotel is on is only yards from the expressway, so it is very easy to get onto the fast roads to the airport. Take a public taxi from the airport using the meter for around 300 baht plus two tolls of 25 and 45 baht. Cheap and easy.

I'd definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing, trouble-free place to stay in Bangkok.

My wife and two young children were at the start of an extended trip trough Asia and we agreed to indulge ourselves in Bangkok. An old friend of mine gave me the name of the hotel and said ''stay here" with a wink...I trust him like a brother so we booked on line hoping he was on the money like he had been in the past. We were intending to be able to fill our bags with inexpensive clothing from shopping areas very close our chosen hotel in Sukhumvit. We certainly got that right! Bangkok is a shoppers paradise and there is no better place to stay, location wise, than the Ariyasomvilla.

But since this is a hotel review and not a city guide, let me get back on track. This is a small and beautiful hotel with 20 something rooms, that is stunningly designed around the co-owners Grandfather's residence that was built in the 1940's - architecturally and design-wise the place is superb. It truly is an oasis because as many people who know Bangkok know only to well that it is very fast, full of hustle and bustle and in-personal monolithic hotels.

Check out the hotels web site for all the photos etc, but as you will see it has a really nice big pool, very green lush gardens, wi-fi which was connected simply and the staff were genuine and began to predict your individual preferences after a day or two.

My wife is a fish eating vegetarian, so she was grinning like a cheshire cat because the restaurant at the Ariyasom is vegetarian and fish only. We both found the food to be of excellent quality, very tasty and represented good value for money.

More a comment about Thais in general than the staff at the hotel is they sometimes have difficulty in understanding your requests or questions and will nod or say yes when they actually don't understand...the good thing with Ariasom is that being such a small hotel, the affable manager, and English born, David is at hand to sort out any confusion, negating any language issues quickly and without fuss.

The other thing we love about this hotel is the way you can avoid traffic from the airport, being a stones throw off the motorway, you can be there from the airport in 25 mins, never once being stopped in Bangkok's notorious traffic snarls. A tip for the uninitiated, make sure you insist "meter on" to the taxi driver, simply say "suk-um-vit soi noong" while holding up one finger...go to the end of the road and you'll see your oasis. Well under $10 for the journey, we did it for $5 US both times, including tolls.

The hotel is a stones throw from Bumrungrad hospital also, we had an unexpected visit, lets just say the quality and price as a patient is nothing like what you will find at home - excellent experience.

Overall a super hotel experience, I'd would go there again in a heart beat, and I would have no hesitation about sending my friends there...but hey don't tell people you don't like, because remember it only has 20 something rooms - don't let everyone in on the secret! Enjoy.

The find of the year! Ariyasom Villa has it all. The best location on Sukhumvit Soi 1 and right next to Bumrungrad Hospital. It has the “wow” factor as it is simply beautiful – a small boutique hotel designed on old Thai villas. The staff are absolutely lovely. David and his wife make you feel like you’re part of the family, not a customer.

I would absolutely recommend this hotel to everyone.
