“Sorry our stay was for only one night.”
Reviewed 12 February 2011

We decided to treat ourselves to a good standard of hotel for our final night in Bangkok and swithered whether to take a chance and book a smaller boutique style hotel or go for a larger upmarket chain hotel. We took a chance and booked here, rather than some massive high rise and we are so glad we did. When booking, we were looking for somewhere where we could go out for a bit of a walk but be able to spend the day before a late night flight home relaxing by the pool and enjoying a spa treatment. This place fitted the bill perfectly.
To note, from the airport do not bother using the train link. Although one of the stops, Makkasan is relatively close by, you will not be able to get a taxi there and you'll end up having to walk, which with luggage in 35 degree heat is not pleasant!
The hotel is located in Sukhumvit, an area that i'm not particularly keen on but it does mean that it is very handy for the BTS and is easily walkable from the nearest station. The hotel is also located right next to a stop on the Klong which will whisk you as far as the Golden Mount in a matter of minutes.
The hotel itself is beautiful. The rooms are huge and furnished to the highest standards imagineable. Public areas are also well designed and encourage lazing about and admiring the building. We found the staff both helpful and courteous throughout our brief stay and David, the owner, very friendly. They were happy to provide us with a room in which to shower and change before our flight home which was very much appreciated.
We used the Spa, which was good and ate at the restaurant. As a committed carnivore I actually really enjoyed the veggie and fish menu and loved the soft shell crabs. They were nearly as good as the home made bread and butter pudding i had for dessert! Breakfast was also very good with an excellent selection again ranging from pancakes to eggs benedict and a vegetarian take on a full English.
Overall we will definitely try to stay here again on our next visit so we've started to save now!

I nearly gave the hotel 4 stars but I think they let themselves down too much on the service side. On the plus side, it's a great location in many ways though you might question this when you look at the map. Although it's a good distance from the main tourist area of the royal palace etc, it's got a canal boat taxi service just up an alleyway, which was a great experience (though it's still a bit of a walk or tuk tuk to the royal palace area from the terminus). Also, it's got a sky train station just down the road which again was extremely convenient. The room we were given was huge (I'm not sure it was meant for us - see below): we had an entire lounge separate from the bedroom. My only complaint about the room would be the tiny bath.

Our service complaints: when we arrived, the taxi we'd booked through the hotel didn't show up but fortunately another hotel stepped in and called them to alert them to our arrival. When we got to reception they tried to insist that we'd changed the time of our arrival by email (we hadn't), and when we asked to see the email they were referring to they failed and tried to avoid the subject, even though I asked again to see the email. Then when were taken to the room it wasn't available (apparently linked to expecting us later) so we were taken to the huge room (no complaints as to that result). Later that night when we asked reception a few questions they seemed incapable of communicating in English, and even getting a cup of tea turned into a bit of a trial. When we met the English manager in the morning he seemed organised and helpful, it's just a shame he didn't step in the day before (maybe he was off duty).

All in all, a very decent place let down by the desk staff.

Dear Sir,
Thanks for your review and apologies for the problems you encountered. I'm sorry that our front office didn't perform well. You've identified some important areas for training. If there is an issue over arrival time we certainly should be able to show written correspondence - so that's certainly our fault. On the whole our spoken English on the front desk is not too bad. You may have encountered one of our very junior staff but she is almost never on her own.
As for me I'm not sure where I was as I am in and around the hotel most of the time - just sorry that I didn't encounter you the night you arrived to sort out these issues.
Anyway, we must take on board your comments and do better - more training and more attention to detail.
Once again my apologies and best regards
David Lees

We'd return to Bangkok anytime knowing that Ariyasomvilla's there to stay in. This was a beautiful place to retreat to after the hustle and bustle of Bangkok. We took an overnight bus from Khuraburi, and arrived in Bangkok exhausted at 4am. By the time we arrived at Ariyasomvilla it was still pitch black and well before 5am. As we anticipated a less commercial and more low-key environment, we weren't sure if anybody would be up and about at this time.

A security person was near the entry and took us through to reception, where in time, a helpful and friendly face arrived to check us in. We were absolutely delighted as we were taken to a beautiful temporary room in which to rest in until our suite was ready later in the day. So we got in a sleep and shower before exploring Bangkok.

We thought it was a fantastic location. At the end of a quiet narrow road off Sukhimvit, one of the major roads through the city. 5 min walk to the Ploenchit Skytrain stop which is only two stops (and literally minutes) from Siam (Central). It's also not far to the river taxi to get to the side of the city with the Royal Palace and Wat Pho temple.

Back to Ariyasomvilla, we had lovely breakfasts either in an elegant high ceilinged dining room or outside in a peaceful courtyard next to the pool. Breakfasts were a delicious and generous selection of Thai or Western foods all started with a lovely platter of tropical fruits. We ate our first night's dinner at the hotel and weren't disappointed with the calibre or quantity of food. Loved the healthy, organic and vegetarian aspect of the menu.

Nor were we disappointed with the service - the Thai staff were absolutely lovely and friendly. There were occasional ordering glitches, but as mentioned in previous reviews, David the owner, smoothly and seamlessly corrected any issues required. We were really impressed with David who'd be in the restaurant serving and cleaning tables early in the morning, and also last thing at night, all the while with a friendly face and happy to engage with his guests.

We cannot recommend this place highly enough and look forward to finding another opportunity to stay in Bangkok. Thank you to David and the staff at Ariyasomvilla!

Bangkok is intense, noisy, traffic congested, crowded and hot. Ariyansomvilla is a wonderful oasis in the midst of it all. It's a small property with about 25 rooms , a lovely restaurant and a beautiful pool and garden area.

The rooms are spacious and extremely comfortable. This is not an hermetically sealed highrise so there is noise. : school children at a nearby temple school, boat traffic on an adjacent canal, roosters crowing and other neighbourhood noises. The hotel is located at the end of a small street about 10-12 minutes walk to the nearest skytrain station. Although a bit of a walk after a day of strenuous sightseeing, it was a welcome oasis and I enjoyed the street level connection that high rise hotels lack.

The sites and attractions of Bangkok are spread out over a vast area and no hotel is close to everything. I found the hotel's location to be very central with easy access to BTS (Skytrain) only 2 stops from Siam Square, an easy connection to Silom, a reasonable connection to Sathon Taksin for the boats along a Chao Praya River to the Royal Palace/Wat Po areas. There is also easy access bysmall canal boat immediately adjacent to the hotel to many city sites . The hotel will particularly suit independent travelers who like to explore and get off the beaten track but are looking for comfort and the end of the day. It is a 10+ minute walk to the Skytrain along a narrow road with broken sidewalks and vendors, etc. It's very safe, day and night, but if you are not comfortable with wending your way along the street, you will have to rely on taxis , which are readily available and cheap.

We stayed for 3 nights in Ariyasomvilla in early Jan 2011.
Immediately after i made the booking i got and welcome email form the hotel management and offer for airport transfer. Didn't use it since i found cheaper offer but i felt the personal touch even before going there.
When we get there the staff was very friendly and helpful. The hotel itself is a hidden garden in the hearth of Bangkok. There is a nice swimming pool as well. It is the most eco friendly hotel I have been so far. The room are spacious, clean and very well decorated. The bathroom is really great. The food offered in the restaurant is only vegetarian or sea food, no meat served. It is tasty, but be prepared to wait really long for simple soup or starter.
Our flight back home was late in the afternoon so we were offered a luggage storage after check out and also shower before leaving to the airport.
Overall we are sorry we had only 3 days in Ariyasomvilla and we would recommend it to anyone of our friends (and not only).

We travelled back from our honeymoon via Bangkok and wanted to stay somewhere a little more homely than the big/super hotels we stayed elsewhere in our honeymoon trip round Indonesia and Thailand. We thought Ariyasom would be that. It didn't disappoint. David, the owner, is a fountain of local knowledge and extremely welcoming and hospitable. He is the face of this hotel which really is a home from home, where, amazingly, a stone's throw from Bangkok's centre you are in a perfectly serene and relaxed setting, that really does feel like home. Incidentally, I am a massive carnivore yet Ariyasom's fish and veggie in-house restaurant served some of the best and honest food we had all trip. I have never been bothered to review/rate a hotel or anything before, but this place deserves it. Enjoy....

We booked Ariyasomvilla for 4 nights before going to Cambodia for 4 nights and then booked another hotel for our last 4 nights in Bangkok after returning from Cambodia. After a couple of nights at Ariyasomvilla we cancelled our other hotel and came back here. It felt like an oasis and a home away from home in this fascinating, crowded, intense, hot, humid, and traffic-ridden city. The place is clean, quiet (some sounds of river buses going by in the canel next to our room but after one night wasn't even conscious of them), lovely in a non-sterile modern way, with wonderful internet connection, great staff, and to top it all of, excellent vegetarian and seafood Thai food in its restaurant. It has a swimming pool and outdoor tables where one can eat or drink around the pool, and a spa where very good massage therapists will give you a great Thai massage for about US $26 per hour that will relax you after you've seen the sights and all those temples in the heat.

David Lees, an expat Brit who along with Thai wife who has a Harvard degree in landscape design, own the place and David watches over his excellent Thai staff and guests like a calm father hen--he supervises the kitchen, the food buying and preparation, and looks after his guests needs and wants constantly. He makes ever guest feel special and is a font of knowledge about the city.

The Ariyasomvilla is located down a small but intense small street behind a major hospital and when you first travel it you aren't quite sure whether it is dicey or not but it turns out to be perfectly safe, and from the hotel it will lead you to a busy and traffic-ridden thoroughfare where a BTS "skytrain" is located that will take you to the river to catch a boat to the main temples, or to the major shopping and entertainment areas.

If you like tall, modern, sterile hotels with food like you get at home, this may not be the place for you. But if you want a true oasis with excellent food, comfort, and great service where you can relax after a day of sightseeing or business, this is it in Bangkok. We won't stay anywhere else when we come back.
