“Excellence Experience in Bangkok”
Reviewed 19 December 2011

3 times that we stay in Lebua Hotel, Every time we feel like a VIP no matter which type we stay. The Staffs since the driver, the bell boy, reception, everyone is very friendly, smart and great hospitality manner. We feel like very important for them every time. They got a magnificent view over Bangkok and Chao Phraya River at Sky bar. It is very impressive with turn down service ( a cut box of Chocolate and little message ) Breakfast is stunning and varieties. Definitely that we will stay at Lebua every time we are in Bangkok... Thank you for being upper standard service and we are looking forward to see you all soon.

The positives:

1) Breakfast is outstanding, must be one of the best in Bangkok. Set in the Mozu cafe at the pool/gym level.Options to suit everyone, all fresh and stocked. Pastries were out of this world and wood fired oven used to toast things.

2) The view and ambience from the outdoor Breeze Bar on 52nd floor is great and worth a visit- although drinks are more expensive than 5* prices in central London!!

3) The fitness facilities are well stocked and spacious for a good work out with a good sized pool for a tower block in central Bangkok

4) The location is great- easy to walk up to Silom Road, and very close to Saphan Taksin sky train and all the hotel piers by the river.

The negatives (from arrival...)

1) Greeted by suspicious looks from a doorman as we were in flip flops having just arrived from Ko Samui.. Quite an odd lobby that looked like an office block reception (which ironically what the state tower is!) rather than a top 5* hotel lobby... Very indifferent check in staff- asked to hand over passports and credit card and told to with a wave to   "sit over there". Of course there was no space to sit,  as only a few chair spaces in the small lobby, so we ventured over to a free table in the corner, and were rapidly shooed away saying this was for restaurant/bar only(a corner of the lobby called the lounge bar with zero view/atmosphere!!!) so we walked back and waited at the counter again for 10 mins or so....not a pleasant first impression for what we thought was a Tower Club experience......

2) Then whisked up to the 56th floor to be shown our "suite". Upon entering the room we were almost immediately asked to sign a legal disclaimer to be able to go out onto the balcony!!!!! This did have a great view of Bangkok (see photo), but housed 2 air conditioning units of adjoining rooms(see photo)- no seating or practical use apart from to stand, look and leave...

As others on TA have mentioned, this development is a condominium complex gone wrong and we couldn't agree more. The room decor is quite stark and not luxurious (apart from the bathroom interior)... All white walls with cheap looking wood laminate floor that just didn't go... the furniture and kitchen was out of an Ikea catalogue (see photo). No decor/atmosphere and not somewhere you would want to hang out in on a luxurious holiday. Seating area as you enter was of no practical use apart from to dump bags and unpack as the view was of a stark white wall with an empty TV socket!! A great 1 bed condo to rent maybe, but NOT a space that can honestly be described as a "suite" of a 5* hotel.

3) In wanting to get out of the condo as soon as possible, we thought we would seek sanctuary in the Tower Club area on 52nd floor(indoor only, apart from small balcony for standing smokers- no signed disclaimer needed for this one)....Beware of the swarms of flip-flop police who screen you upon the lift doors opening!! Luckily we were pre warned and dug out trousers and covered shoes! The club area is open from 12-6 when it turns into a paid indoor bar called oceans 52. It was the most unwelcoming experience we have ever had at a hotel club lounge. It is quite dark and we were not allowed past the threshold despite having all our documents until one of the wardens had disappeared to make a few phone calls. We were then ushered in military style to a table. No welcome, or explanation of how the area worked or what was on offer.

Asked to order our drinks, and based on previous TA reviews went for the mojitos which were good... Afternoon tea served to the table which was nice. The atmosphere was very sterile, with dark lighting and quite a restricted and claustrophobic  feel. Not the kind of place we would want spend time at the end of a relaxing 2 weeks in Thailand. If you want to get dressed up smartly during the day time and drink cocktails til you collapse you would love this place! The club timings are very strange (12-6) -most other clubs are open all day which enable you to pop in and out and just relax- maybe alcoholic drinks for 2hrs in the evening 6-8 and soft drinks/ coffees at other times might make the whole setup a bit more appealing.

4) The Internet access is very temperamental and we only managed to get it to work occasionally.

5) The lifts are a nightmare in the evenings. The state tower is a big tourist spot hence the lifts are always jammed- there is a service lift which you can use also, which ends up in the main office block!

6) Bar pricing. I know the view is nice, but how can anyone justify charging 650 baht (13 UK pounds) plus 17% tax for a glass of house white wine? Most other 5* in Bangkok will charge around 300 baht. I'm sure the food in the restaurants is amazing but I would rather spend the same money on a 2-3 Michelin star restaurant in London.....

We were so disappointed with the whole experience (we have stayed at millennium Hilton/oriental/peninsula before) and have always enjoyed spending time at the hotels. We just wanted to get away (despite having prepaid for 2 nights) and at least spend the last night of our holiday in a nice friendly environment where we could feel relaxed and welcome.

When the Internet finally worked we managed to book a night at the Hansar- best decision ever!

Despite us checking out a day early on a prepaid 2 night stay, there was total indifference from the reception staff and not even a question as to how our stay was and why we were leaving early!!!!! If this was my hotel I would be gutted if guests left early and would at least enquire as to why!

In summary this is great for outdoor/stunning view / stunningly expensive bars and restaurants but the whole hotel experience is not a pleasant one (apart from breakfast!).....

We would really recommend you stay elsewhere if you are after an unhurried, relaxing, luxurious break in Bangkok.

Visited Tower Club once again, this time for 3 nights and they were just as I imagined them. Always fast service, great rooms and the lounge is according to me the best one in APAC. I need a bit of privacy away from the crowds and it is possible in Lebua. Gym and pool area are good and the hotel is situated in the Silom area which is worth a stroll every now and then. If you are looking for pure luxury and relaxation with a possbillity to enjoy a (pricy) dinner on a roof top club then this is the place. I will be back Febuary 2012 and will write again.

Room Tip: Ask for a river view

My husband and I had only 1 night stay after arriving in Bangkok on our way to Hua Hin to celebrate our 22nd wedding anniversary. I arrived into Bangkok on a late flight from London so arranged to be picked up by the hotel's transfer service. I was met at arrivals by their excellent driver and enjoyed the glimpses of the gold dome on top of the hotel on my way in.

Just had enough time once arriving at the hotel to have some great cocktails at the Sky Bar! The weather was balmy and the view fabulous.

Our very spacious Tower Club Riverview room was wonderful with a lovely view, great amenities with everything you could possibly want. We decided to have the buffet breakfast around the pool instead of at the Tower Club Lounge but had a quick look around the lounge, once again with great views. Breakfast was very good with a large variety of Asian and Western options, including egg station.

Our only regret is that we did not have more time to experience the hotel.

First, the good:

State Tower is a strong property. Service is very good and I certainly enjoyed the club lounge. To be clear, the lounge "closes" at 6:00 when the space it occupies becomes "Breezes". The pool and firness center are also quite fine. And, of course, the entire Dome complex is a standout.

But there seems something pretentious about this place. In an effort to be over the top, they've managed to make themselves look a bit like buffoons. I suggest they cool it on the pretense. Also, this is celarly a condo project gone wrong, which is a little offputting. Last, contruction is clearly cheap, and in only a few years, chips and dings are already present

Room Tip: Internet sites often provide excellent rates

Sometimes a hotel is just a hotel. We stayed at the Lebua in July of 2011. This was the last stop after spending a month traveling through Cambodia, Vietnam and Thailand with my partner. We have traveled extensively (over 50 countries) and have stayed in the best and the worst that can be imagined. This trip was celebrating her 50th so we chose more on the high end. The Club lounge was superb. We enjoyed afternoon mojitos pronounced "moegeetoes" all throughout Asia each afternoon and it was a welcome spot to return to after our daily sightseeing excursions. The cocktails were excellent! In fact as good as ones we had in Cuba! They do enforce the dress code during the day, but this wasn't a problem and did make for a nicer atmosphere.

The service at the hotel was impeccable. At times a bit overly gracious but in general the staff seemed amiable and eager to assist. Skybar is a great place for evening cocktails before heading out to dinner and we stopped by on several occassions for drinks and appetizers. While the prices were high the ambience and view were well worth the trip. Beware of the wind on the outside patio. We opted to hang out inside and then asked our hostess to secure a spot on the patio for a few minutes to gaze at the view, take some photos and socialize before returning to our comfortable indoor booth. 15 minutes outside was sufficent each night. The Hangovertini was one of the most disgusting drinks either of us had ever tried. Our hostess gladly replaced it when we commented on this and didn't seem suprised by our reaction. Note * we received multiple drink coupons when booking with the hotel directly so we only paid for food not drinks**

As for the hotel rooms themselves...great disappointment. The stainless steel appliances in the kitchen suite were mismatched and actually just plastic coverings. Likewise in the bathroom. The first night our showerhead broke and while maintenance replaced it within a 1/2 hour, we learned that it was actually a cheap plastic part fabricated to look like a high end fixture. Good bath products although I can always use more lotion than they provide. Moisturizer is the key to youth!

Housekeeping was great and as mentioned by others, the views from the balcony were fab too! Bed was comfortable and we enjoyed the morning buffet breakfast. I'm a sushi nut and the sushi bar for breakfast made me so happy...a great way to start our day.

We did use the gym and it was good with all the requisite equipment and facilities.

The night market in Bangkok can be skipped but DON'T miss the weekend market. It was the best! I bought sandlas, purses, scarves....the list goes on and on. In fact we did most of our souveneir shopping there and were pleased with the selection and prices of items.

Room Tip: The riverview is NOT substantially better than the city view. The Club privledges are worth the extr...

Tower Club was amazing. We spent the first two nights of our honeymoon here and were treated like royalty. About 30 people welcomed us to the hotel between checking in and getting to our rooma nd this didnt stop!! Welcomed to breakfast, thanked for coming to breakfast, welcomed back to the hotel after going out for a walk.
Breakfast buffet is amazing, pork buns! Yum! You pretty much dont have to do anything yourself..the buttons to the lift are pressed for you, bags carried, bed turned down with info on the weather the following day. Nothing was too much for the staff at Tower Club.
We made use of the free canapes and drinks time (12 noon - 6pm) that comes with staying in the Tower Club rooms. AMAZING. I had a Pina COlada and a Mai Tai! Was shocked that this is all a complimentary service.
The pool area was nice, gym (although we didnt use) had state of the art stuff! Would highly recommend Tower Club for a max of three nights, I think you would get a bit over it after that!
All in all a great place to stay.
Had dinner at Sirocco one night, spectacular but you have to pay. Almost $200 for one beer, water, a shared entree and two mains. But you are paying for the view and the most amazing service I have ever encountered. Perfect for the start of a honeymoon.

Room Tip: Tower Club for the free canapes and cocktails etc
