This an older hotel and it shows. The rooms and furnishings are ageing and the place really needs refurbishment. It's outside the main centre of BKK, so it's reasonably quiet. The rooms are functional and the bed and linen were OK. The lifts are rather slow, and we found using the staircase was quicker in some cases.
One thing that really let the place down was the restaurant. There's continental and cooked buffet but there's hardly anything vegetarian apart from toast and fruit if that's what you need. But that's besides the point- we ended up not eating in the hotel at all because I found cockroaches crawling over the bread left out for toasting. When I reported this, there was nothing done for a day, When I complained further, the response was to plug the crack in the wall from where to the roaches were coming with a paper towel. I hate to imagine what the kitchen was like. We were there about 5 days and I never saw anyone in the restaurant in the evening- tells a story.
The staff on duty at the restaurant entry checking whether you had a breakfast voucher were remarkably miserable and unfriendly. If they put the same amount of effort into sorting out the restaurant as they did in trying to ensure that nobody got in without a voucher then they might find they had more customers.
However, other staff were excellent. After checking out the hotel, I was en route to our next desitnation when I realised my camera was missing. We called the hotel and it turned out this had been found by a security guard who handed it in- the staff kept it safe and even offered to get it couriered to me. If the 5 star service exemplified here could be combined with a refurbishment of the rooms and the restaurant/kitchen, then Karnmanee Palace could be a very good hotel.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room before you book.

With all the hotels in Bangkok, keep looking for a place to stay. No cleaning done on any of the days we were there, no fresh towels and basic amenities.
Breakfast was below average.
Beds were rock hard.
No one spoke English
The only redeeming feature was location

This is a very average hotel. The breakfast was decent. Rooms are basic. It's a good location - near the sky train and easy to get a taxi. There are plenty of amazing luxury hotels in Bangkok, but if you're looking for a cheap place that's comfortable, the Karnmanee wasn't bad.

I like to stay at this hotel for a few reasons, none of which have to do with luxury or comfort. The hotel is a 12 minute brisk walk to the Saphan Khwai skytrain station, or a tuk tuk for 40 baht can zip you down the street and around the corner to the station. During this walk, I rarely see another farang because this is a blue-collar commercial area of Bangkok. If you want cultural immersion and to be among Thais going about their day to day business, this is the place. The staff is very friendly and their English is strained at best, which for me is quite fun. The hotel has safe deposit boxes behind the registration desk rather than in-room safes. They have been undergoing some desperately-needed modernization during recent years. The old, horrible carpeting in the rooms is being replaced with laminate Pergo-type flooring. Internet routers have been installed (2/floor) and access is free. Although the rooms are spacious, lighting is dim, furniture minimal and old, picture tube TVs, and beds somewhat hard. The bathrooms are okay, with a big mirror, adequate countertop space, and great water pressure. I have never had a problem with insufficient hot water and have stayed there approximately 15 times. The breakfast buffet is great and included with the room charge. I don’t look for an “American breakfast” while in Thailand. They have one, but it’s usually cold eggs, cold pancakes, croissants, and cold hot dogs they call sausage. Instead, the Thai food is excellent, which you should eat while in Thailand. I don’t understand why nearly every hotel in Thailand, including Karnmanee, puts salt in the fruit juice, which absolutely destroys it. So, you are drinking what tastes like Tang in a land with fantastic fruit. The cost of the hotel might be slightly high for what you get, but the cultural experience and breakfast are worth it to me.
