“Cheap and clean but lacking personality”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 18 July 2013

The guesthouse was easy to find thanks to a former trip advisor reviewer and reasonably handy to the sky train. The room was clean but there was only a bottom sheet on the bed. I found a spare sheet in a drawer and was given a blanket the next day when I asked (after finding just the sheet not enough).
There was someone at reception until early afternoon but at other times the reception and bar area was vacated and in darkness.
The girls were polite. There was no sign of the owner during my 2 night stay. I must say it was hard to get hold of anyone when the reception area was not staffed. At one point I rang the outside bell (as directed by the sign) several times and no one came.
I booked a half day tour to the floating market through the guesthouse which I later had to cancel, losing my deposit. It was only a small amount but it was annoying that the girl who booked it could not tell me the return time. It turned out the "half day" started at 6am and finished at 3pm!
Overall I was disappointed: this place did not live up to the other reviews.

Nice place. Friendly owner who provides good advice.
The filipino maids are lovely. So polite - wow !

Clean, comfortable and great comfortable bed.
Price is excellent and the location is in a good central, interesting area.

No complaints whatsoever. But not suitable for people who have difficulty climbing stairs.

Affordable, clean, and intimate reception at MHC Guesthouse. I loved that it's managed by the owner and that you get to hear his personal story. Further, the rooms are spacious, very clean and with all comforts of a 4 star hotel (AC, minibar, wifi).

I also really appreciated the owner's and his assistant flexibility in helping us accommodate our particular travel needs, the type of service we wouldn't have in a bigger, more commercial place.

This hotel is a great value for a one star pension. It is an older building but very well maintained, and clean. Mr. Max and his staff are helpful and friendly. If you want fancier, more modern accommodations, which include, for example a lift, there are a lot to choose from in Bangkok, but you will need to pay 450 to 600 Bhat more per night. At the price, this is a real bargain for a convenient location in Bangkok. Mr. Max, the owner is a retired pilot and the rooms are named after the plans he has flown. Parents traveling with children should be aware that MHC stands for Mile High Club. While Mr. Max is by no means running a brothel, he does post candid instructions/advice to gentlemen who bring female companions back to the room on the door of each room. I am posting a photo of these instructions with this review. (Prostitution is a fact of traveling in Bangkok and indeed exists everywhere. I acknowledge that Mr. Max is just being frank in his discussion. However as a prudish American, I would prefer not to see it discussed on the door of my son's hotel room. ) Because we travel with our two sons and because after sleeping for three nights on the older mattress in our room an old shoulder injury began to bother me again, I would probably not stay here again myself. That said, when I was younger, this hotel would have been a real find so I would definitely recommend it to younger budget travelers without kids.

We stayed as a family in 3 rooms. Took a break to Phuket and then came back. The MHC was excellent. Rooms were clean and spacious. Max and Rea were fantastic and couldn't do enough to ensure our stay was good. We would thoroughly recommend the MHC to anyone looking for excellent budget accommodation which as others have said, is right on the sky train route so accessible to everywhere in Bangkok.
We'll definitely be back.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms on the top floor are worth the climb!

We stayed for 5 nights in mid May. We were able to check in at 3am and were greeted with a smiling face.

The room was clean and well maintained. Max was always very pleasant and was happy to assist whenever necessary.

We liked the location of the guesthouse as it was suitable for our needs as it was close to the BTS. We only needed to travel once to Kao San road to begin a tour, other than that it was convenient to everything else.

If going back to Bangkok I would certainly stay here again. Great value for money.

Best place to stay if it is your first time in Bangkok. The location might be a bit far from the main attractions, but the guesthouse is a 5 minute walk away from the skytrain station, which will basically take you anywhere you could possibly go. The owner and staff are also wonderful with helping with directions, and have little slips of paper typed out on how to get to places the cheapest, fastest, and safest ways, while avoiding scams from taxi drivers and etc. If you are looking for fancy beds and baths and spas and pools, this is not the place, but for the money you are paying, I could not imagine a better place to call home for a couple of days. Thank you for a great stay!
