“Sala Arun - The True Story”
Reviewed 29 January 2014 via mobile

You have to be a little adventurous when staying at this hotel. If you are used to a western hotel, this might not be for you. The hotel is located in a warehouse alley, so if you are looking for a grand entrance, you won't get it. Also, get a room that faces the river, or you will have a lot of noise from the alley. All of the other reviews of the hotels proximity to the water taxi, view of Wat Arun, and local attractions (Wat Pho and Grand Palace, etc.) are true. The staff is so friendly too, that they will help you with anything!

Great location, near Grand Palace and Wat Pho. View from the room was beautiful, facing Wat Arun. Staff was friendly and helpful. The room was very clean and comfortable. Breakfast was not very good due to limited choice, but then good western style breakfast is something hard to find in Thailand. Overall, this was a great stay. Do have a drink at the hotel's rooftop bar in the evening. The view is incredible.

Room Tip: Choose a room facing the river. The view is amazing!

Boutique hotel, friendly atmosphere, competent service above all a great location to visit the main monuments of Bangkok. The rooftop bar has a unique view where you can see perhaps one of the best sunset in Bangkok. We stayed in a room with balcony facing the river with the same fantastic view. Experience to repeat!
The restaurant on the river very friendly, but with little option for those who prefer Thai food.
Attention for those who want to check out early morning.

Room Tip: Room with a balcony facing rhe river

High Points:
Location - you literally are a stones throw away from Wat Po home of the Reclining Buddha, directly across the River from Wat Arun, and 10 minutes walking distance to the Grand Palace, home of the Emerald Buddha (actually Jade).
Views - If you request a room of the Wat Arun you will be overlooking the water and and Wat Arun. It is stunning both night and day. Additionally from the breakfast dock and the bar balcony, the views are stunning. From the eagles nest bar you can literally see both the Grand Palace and Wat Po from one side and the river and Wat Arun from the other.
Room - The room is good size, beds were comfortable and bathrooms were clean and well appointed with Robes and Slippers.
Breakfast Service - you have a plethora of choices from a typical Western Breakfast to a traditional Thai pad thai. There is also yogurt and juice and water and baked goods. Sitting out over the river enjoying your breakfast is definitely a great and peaceful start to your day in Bangkok.
Low Points:
Price - this place is bit pricey compared to other places in bangkok. You can stay in a much more luxurious hotel for the same price but you wont have the location or special views, or intimate feel that this place gives.
Getting There - Down a crazy little alley because it is right against the river. Our taxi driver, who did not speak english, had a lot of issues finding the place. Make sure to print the map given to you by Sala Arun so you can find it. Also when you walk down the alley it can seem sketchy but once you get inside its all irrelevant.
Water Damage - There is noticable water damage throughout the property and slightly inside the room we were in. It created somewhat of a musty smell.

All in all I rate this hotel very highly and would recommend it for a peaceful, romantic, real Bangkok experience. The reason I chose this hotel versus a high rise is that you are more connected to the city instead of stashed away in some multibillion dollar complex designed to keep us westerners comfortable. This hotel puts you right down the alley and on the river, which creates a more intimate genuine experience.

Chose this hotel because it was on the river, and had views of Temples. The view from the room did not disappoint. The activity on the river was feverish, walking distance to the Temples, quite close to the shopping district. The rooftop bar was nice....great views again.
The wooden stairs were a bit noisy, maybe the other patrons should have realised this.
Room was large, nice clean bathroom, not a lot of storage for clothes.

The Sala Arun is a beautiful oasis in the middle of the city. Our family of four (kids aged 14 and 11) had two rooms (they didn't have a quad), both with great views of the Chao Phraya River and Wat Arun on the other shore. The rooms themselves were large and comfortable, with big beds, TV, AC, and a large clean bathroom. The restaurant is fine and also overlooks the river. The best part of this hotel, as mentioned in other reviews, is the rooftop bar at sunset. There's the river and wat on one side, and the sparkling roofs of Wat Pho and the Royal Palace on the other. The location is awesome - close to the mentioned attractions as well as the river ferry to other parts of Bangkok. We splurged a little on this hotel because we stayed a couple of days over Christmas, but it was well worth it.

Room Tip: The rooms facing the river have great views!
