“Probably my favourite bar in the world.........”
Reviewed 6 August 2014

I don't often write reviews of bars or restaurants in hotels, and generally includes them instead in the hotel review. However, the living room is not just a hotel bar, it is an important standalone Bangkok establishment in it's own right with many customers coming in from outside.

The Living Room is situated on Floor 1 of the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit located on Sukhumvit Road at Asok BTS and Sukhumvit MRT. Floor 1 rather confusingly (for both Brits and Americans) is the third floor of the hotel as Ground and Lobby are below it. Just hit "1" in the lift and turn left.

So in overview it is a jazz themed, nicely furnished cocktail bar in fitting with what you might expect in a 5 Star Deluxe Hotel. But it is so much more than that. I am currently on my 46th Stay at the hotel, and The Living Room is a big reason why I stay here so often. The Jazz is excellent, the food and drink are great and the staff are all completely wonderful.

Firstly the music. It changes from time to time and season to season but currently The Randy Cannon Trio plays sets from Tuesday to Saturday starting at nine-ish and finishing sometime after midnight. Randy on Piano, Khun Pong on bass and Chris Sweeney on drums. Randy is a brilliant jazz musician who has been the key to the Jazz in The Living Room for a very long time. This is a serious Jazz venue and the Trio plays some serious jazz.

Earlier in the evening a solo jazz painist performs sets between six until about 9pm. Khun Pang currently plays this set and does a fine job. On Sunday the Tim Hedges Trio provides the setting for the hotel's Jazzy Brunch (also well worth a visit). Tim does a solo set in the evening as well. So for a jazz fan a visit is a must and many come purely for the jazz.

Sometimes the bar will have guest vocalists from the US, and Steve Cannon, Randy's Brother, who is a phenomenal trumpet player often used to play with the trio. Steve playing "So What" from Miles Davis's Kind of Blue was something I will never forget. (I still have it on my 'phone.....). Hopefully Steve will be back one day.

On a lighter note, The Living Room has done seasons dedicated to Frank Sinatra, or Frank and Barbra Streisand. These nights tend to be very popular so book in advance.

Food and drink. I don't eat much in The Living Room but when I have it is very good. As well as typically bar/hotel food, selections from the hotels other restaurants are offered. Basil is a great Thai Restaurant, and Rossini's is a world class Italian (Best italian meal I ever had). So choice of food is good and the food is good too. Try the mixed Satay from Basil as a snack.

The bar is first class. Excellent properly made Cocktails for 350 Baht++ (a real bargain for a full strength long Island Iced Tea) and a great wine list from 350 Baht a glass or 1500 Baht a bottle. The fine wine list is also excellent if you want to spend a bit more. Good wine is both expensive and hard to find in Thailand so this is a good place to drink reliable nice wine. Beer is a bit pricey at 250 Baht for local beer or 300/320 Baht for imported, but that does include brain death beers like Chimay. If you want to make a night of it, I think the bar currently offers an "all you can drink" house pour evening for 1200 Baht. Ask if you are interested, I don't know the details. One other thing is the bar understands what Sherry is, and has both Tio Pepe and Harveys BC (as well as Taylors Port). Odd thing to comment on, but elderly British couples have asked for Sherry in other hotels only to be met with blank stares.

What really makes the bar is the staff. They are all wonderful, and adapt amazingly. If you are sat at a table with important clients or with your Wife/Husband (Major or Minor) then they are highly professional cocktail bar waiters and waitresses. If you are sat at the bar, as a traveller on your own (which I mostly am), they chat (if you want to) and are very friendly. Genuinely friendly. Thai people are friendly and open anyway mostly, but the staff in the bar are from all over Thailand, including from the South and the rural North East. Their natural state is friendly. In some hotels in BKK it is forced out of them to come across as hardcore professional 5 Star Deluxe hotel staff, but not here. Which is a good thing.

So why is it my favourite bar in the world. Well I guess I treat it like my living room on my stays in Asia. The music is great, food and drink good and the staff are my friends. World Class Jazz is so hard to find in the UK (my home) outside Ronnie Scotts, and you have to stay up all night to go there and be in London. Richard Chapman, the hotel General Manager is a big jazz fan and did BKK a great favour by establishing The Living Room as a major venue. Long may it survive!

Hope this helps.

Tony.

“Superb all the way”
Reviewed 2 August 2014

Even though it's only my second time at The Living Room, I can say that it's always going to be a night well-spent if you choose to spend one fine Bangkok evening in this place. The vast selection of wines, cocktails and drinks is sure not to disappoint even the most snobbish of wine connoisseurs. I'd also like to commend the staff for being gracious and accommodating, always providing service with such warm smiles on their faces. We thoroughly enjoyed the music, too. It's the perfect date place!
