The welcome was very warm and has a most personal touch. We were served with butterfly pea welcome drink, with an explanation of how it's made. We were explained the philosophy behind the 5 elements... the room was impeccably clean, with various fruit juice drinks that we're welcome to try.. the staff was most helpful, even the manager offered to buy for us the book of one of the hotel architects that we were interested to get.
Even the General Manager himself came around to give a personal welcome.
Overall, PERFECTO!

This was our first trip to Bangkok and therefore our first stay at the Sofitel So. This is very new and purpose built hotel and they need a little time to grow, but all in all it was a pretty good stay. There are 4 room styles based on 4 elements, Wood, Water, Earth and Metal. The Water and Earth rooms are yet to be finished so we stayed in a Metal room. We were a little hesitant as we thought it could be quite stark and cold. It turned out to be very pleasant on return from a day out in the heat of Bangkok. The bed was very comfortable and the room itself was very pleasant. I think though it will show signs of age quite quickly and there are a few minor deficiencies in some of the building quality and finishes. They have an issue with the air-conditioning as it never really stops blowing and I had to set it to 25deg to save me from putting on a jumper. We found it reasonably cold in other areas of the hotel as well.
My wife and I had booked massage treatments in the spa for just after our arrival which was a lovely way to prepare for the chaos that is Bangkok. We both enjoyed a very professional and soothing massage.
The public areas of this hotel are fantastic with plenty of options for food and beverage. They do a Saturday Brunch in the Red Oven restaurant which we stumbled across and had a very pleasant lunch, which included wine and beer in the all inclusive price. That evening we had cocktails at the rooftop bar which offers fantastic views across the park to the Bangkok skyline. This was followed by dinner at Park Society. Both the food and beverages were of a good standard, and with some work on the service levels, this could be a fantastic experience.
Breakfast was fantastic with a wonderful choice of various buffets and cooked to order offerings.
Staff overall were very helpful and friendly. I might add there was plenty of staff so there was always someone close by to assist. I have to say though, I think they've managed to find the slowest cocktail bar person in Bangkok to make cocktails at the pool bar. When we finally got them, they weren't that good either.
Overall we had an enjoyable stay at the Sofitel So and would return.

I spent 3 days in Sofitel So bangkok the past weekend, and simply love the design of the room. However, there are a few problems during my stay there:

1. faucet of my sink is leaking. Front desk sent a housekeeper and an engineer coming to fix it at 2:30am (cuz it's almost flood out to my bedroom). Though it's temporarily fixed, still leaking later on the night. The next day when i returned to the room after spending a day out visiting here and there, bathroom floor is dry and seems like it's been fixed (i thought), end up it's not really fixed. Still leaking after i use it. I think there's something wrong with the rubber cushion, which you (hotel) better fix it asap or else you'll get lots complaints all the time!

2. Me and my friend want some "cocktail" before noon. The bartender (or waitress?) there was not sure how to make our drinks. They call for help and a manager came. Saw them calling people and checking on the menu for ingrediants, and we waited for quite awhile for our drinks. It took too long and seems really not so professional for a "lobby bar".... But i have to say the waitress was really nice and super friendly.

3. Park Society. The girl at the front desk was MEAN. We know we have to wear at least smart casual to go for a drink, but you shouldn't look at us from head to toe and acting rude like we are some poor people wearing bad clothes carrying backpacks and lots shopping bags that has no money or 'not-high-class-enough' to enter the bar! Can't we take a look after returning to the hotel first and decide if we wanna get change and come back to have a little drink? You don't OWN the bar. You can ask NICELY or at least WITH A SMILE! You are so MEAN that i almost call the manager to complain about you!

Other staff in general are friendly. Front desk of the hotel, Porter guys, Staff at Chocolab and Mixo Bar, love them all! I rate the property 4 stars cuz I just simply love the hotel. Sure there's still room for improvement and hope you guys fix the problems soon.

Very strange hotel this one. It is trying to be a super-cool, super-luxury type but fails. We had prebooked to stay two nights as a city escape but stayed only one.

The good bits:
- The pool is really nice, with a great view.
- The breakfast is excellent - but is quite expensive
- The rooms over-looking the park have some of the best views in Bangkok.

The Bad Bits:
- It took agest to check in. We arrived at 5pm, why the delay. A fancy drink and a long explanation of how great the hotel is does not compensate when you just want to get to your room.

- Why have an air-con that beeps and wakes you up to let you know that the room is at the correct temperature. Seriously...who thought it was a good idea to install that system! (This was the main reasons we left early, I do accept that i am a light sleeper, my wife told me i was making a fuss, but still - be warned.)

- Parties at the pool! If you pay 5* prices you don't want the pool to be taking over on the Saturday afternoon for a pool party. Again, what a stupid idea. Either be a hotel or a club! Don't try and be both, you will always annoy the guests. I am sure these parties make a lot of money for the hotel but when you just want to relax and read by the pool, having 100s of drunk 22 yrd olds around the place is not what you want. (I really sound like a grumpy old man!)

- The rooms are nice to look at they really lack the basic functions. The bath took 40 min to fill while the shower overflows the shower cubicle.

- Drink and food prices. Why does a Singh Beer, 330 ml, cost 250THB (That is nearly $10) at the pool. Seriously...why? Does it come in a solid gold glass? Does it include another 5 free beers? Do I get an extra room with that??? 250THV is as much as the most expensive restuarants and more than any other hotel in Thailand that I have stayed at. That just annoys people, and means I go to 7/11 buy them on the street and bring them to the pool.

The Pullman on Silom, The Hansar and various others all do what this sofitel is trying to do - Cool but luxurious. And they all actually manage it. So Sofitel - sort it out.

It has potential. They have a lot of work to do and need to re-think what they are (hotel or club) before this place is a worthwhile contender to the other excellent hotels in Bangkok

However, I must say, the staff were superb. When I said we wanted to leave they refunded the second night, which they didn't have to do. And were very gracious in handling our complaint.
