Having stayed in many quality hotels around the world, the Sofitel So has to be one of the best I have visited. From the first moment you arrive, the staff do all they can to treat you with respect. The rooftop bar offers terrific views of Bangkok and was a wonderful place to visit on our first night in this chaotic city. We stayed in a Wood room, which was elegant and refined and had an excellent view of Lumphini Park. Other reviewers say the city view rooms are just as good, so I don't think you can go wrong here. The free mini-bar with water and juices was a nice touch. Breakfast was superb with one minor caveat (see below). The quality of the food was excellent and the range to choose from would suit every taste. However, what makes this hotel stand out are not the quirky touches, welcoming as they are, but the quality of the service - from Bump and Petch outside helping to secure cabs and being always polite and friendly, to the professionalism and helpfulness of Akira up at the 9th floor check-in and the friendly, customer-centred delightful Vevina down on the ground floor. Every day these lovely people remembered our names, which is pretty impressive given the hundreds of people coming and going on a daily basis here. The service provided at the Sofitel So is clearly a combination of real sincerity and proper training, so management here can take a bow. My son actually shed a tear when we left and he is well versed in hotel services and etiquette! I couldn't recommend this hotel higher.
Tip 1: The mini-bar in our Wood room (17th floor) was not cold enough, which in a temperate city like Bangkok, is important.
Tip 2: The arrangements for serving coffee at breakfast need improving. Guests want a hot drink pretty quickly, so why not have staff going around with fresh coffee ready to serve it, rather than the system currently in place which promotes forgetfulness!
