Stayed at the Siam in Bangkok in Oct/Nov 2013.
First the good: The grounds of the hotel were absolutely beautiful, with a nice waterfront dining/drinks area, fun pool, and cool deco decor. We stayed in a river view pool villa which was spacious and quite comfortable.
Now the bad: it's VERY tough to get to as a non-Thai speaking tourist. Other than the private river boat shuttle (which runs only every 90min, and was >20min late on 2 occasions), we didn't find anyone who knew where the place was. Taxi drivers were scratching their heads--even with a map the hotel provided! In one instance, we showed the map to 10 taxis, none of whom could even guess where the hotel was. The hotel management needs to do a MUCH better job in providing transportation options, or at least launch an informational campaign for the taxi drivers.
Second, the mosquitoes were brutal. I understand that this is a hotel in the tropics on a waterway, but we've stayed at plenty of other places in tropical Asia and Central/South America in which the skeeters problem was well-managed. The wife and I were totally bitten up on the first night, and it just got worse. That's despite leaving the room doors closed, A/C on, and taking other precautions. The mosquito problem needs to be solved before we would recommend staying there.
The service was friendly, but very "uncertain," which I got the impression was a communications issue with the staff. For example, we asked for recommendations of restaurants and were given a lengthy list of names without recommendation; we asked for recommendations of what time we should go somewhere, we were handed a list of the water ferry schedule.
Overall, pretty property with pretty big problems, considering the sizable price tag.
