Room size was good, location excellent as right by train station and a couple malls. Convenient for finding good food and shopping. Our room didn't smell (as mentioned by a previous reviewer), and the bathroom seemed well appointed. It was all in all a very standard room. Nothing outstanding, but nothing to gripe about either.
The pool on the rooftop was nice, and our kids had fun, but as others said, it is small. Service from the bar there was so so. Breakfast time was a mess. The hotel was pretty full, and when we showed up at 10am for breakfast (breakfast goes until 10:30a) at the main breakfast restaurant, there was a line of about 20 people ahead of us waiting for a table. When we went up to the Club level (more on this later) for breakfast, they were equally busy, tho we could still get a table. But service was nonexistent. At the Club level breakfast, there is a small buffet and you can also order ala carte off a menu. The 2 ladies serving were clearly overwhelmed. Hard to get coffee, plates, cups, and food kept running out, and we waited a long time before finally standing up and intercepting someone to take our food order. A real disappointment.
The biggest disappointment, however, was that I booked here instead of the Renaissance across the street because the Intercontinental would guarantee my double queen room, which we need because we have 3 small children. The price was slightly higher too. Despite my notifying them that we would be arriving in the wee hours of the morning (and paying for the full night) and please don't give away our room (even tho I prepaid for the room), when we arrived, we were notified that the hotel was full and that they did NOT have a room with 2 queen beds as I had reserved with a guarantee. They apologized that it was absolutely their mistake, then asked if I'd accept a double twin room, with nothing else offered. When I asked about an upgrade to a suite for their mistake, they said they were full and a double twin was the best they could do, and offered us no charge on an extra cot. SERIOUSLY? After negating our GUARANTEED room, they wouldn't charge us on the extra cot. Gee, extremely generous of you, Intercontinental. After pushing them further, they upgraded us to Club level benefits, but not all that useful when I already have a full day's tour booked, so free drinks in the Club lounge can't really be enjoyed.
What is the point of a GUARANTEED room, if there is no repercussion to the hotel for failing the guarantee? What does a guarantee mean then? It makes the customer feel better, but upon reflection, it really has no value. I feel I should have been refunded for at least one night to make it right.
