“Great value for money, good location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 May 2007

Just returned from 1 week in Bangkok staying at the Novotel Lotus. Found it to be execellent value for money.

The rooms were clean and spacious. Decor is a bit dated, but we didn't travel all that way to spend our time in the hotel. The staff were very friendly and helpful. All speak English quite well (just not over the phone!).

Buffet breakfast was very good. Large selection of pastries, meats, fruits and anything else you could want. Surprisingly, the dinner buffet was amazing. We ate there on our last night as we were too tired to go elsewhere.

Location of hotel was good. Less than 5 minute walk away from Phrom Pong skytrain station. There is a large 24hr supermarket about 2 minutes away, as well as your usual 7-11, Subway, pubs/bars etc. There is a great restaurant called the Vientiane which is only 1 train ride away (get off at Thong Lor station). Food is great, but worth checking out as it's quite different to what one might expect. If you're after a spot of shopping, the Emporium (large high-end shopping centre) is 5 minutes walk away from the hotel, but other than that, there is not much choice. You will need to jump on the BTS and head towards Nana or Siam.

A completely sub-standard room was given to me, a woman traveling alone and looking for a clean and safe room during my brief holiday in Thailand. Dust flew up from the bedspread when I put my hand luggage on the bed. The hostess, all the while I was attempting to point out what was inconsistent with what was agreed upon when I booked the room in advance, was trying to hustle me for tours and side trips with companies that I'm sure gave her a kickback.

I lasted a total of 90 minutes in this squalid establishment and the only reason why I was there this long was because their 2 computers in the business center were slow and off-line, as I tried to secure an alternate booking. The front desk staff were unconcerned and basically said "take it or leave it". Not exactly a very nice welcome to the "land of smiles".

A "backpacker hotel" would've better than this. At least you know what you're getting up front.

  • Liked — Nothing. The hotel and its service was deplorable.

Basically a decent hotel in my opinion.
Impressive lobby for a Novotel.
The location is in a seedy area off Sukhumvit road, close to Phrom Pong skytrain station. If your destination is not reachable by skytrain, you may have to deal with the awful taffic that Sukhumvit has though (Silom area is better in that respect). Also close is the Emporium shopping mall, with loads of big and more expensive brand names. Pool is decent.
Staff at reception were less impressive: errors on the bill were made, and being rudely denied (customer is king, you would think) for at least 20(!) minutes until we finally were given a correct one (couple next to us faced issues with payment at check-out, which also lasted very long).
In short, room is fine, location doubtful, room for improvement on staff.

Stayed for 3 nights on our way to the beaches in the South.
The hotel is very well located about 5 minutes walk away from a skytrain station.
The room was large, very clean; the staff was very courteous; the dining room was excellent.
There is an exercice room, a large swimming pool.
It is right in the heart of Bangkok, minutes away from a shopping center and a short skytrain ride away from the night market.

This hotel is in the East of Bangkok and on the fringe of most tourist maps of the city. However it is really close to the marvellous Sky Train (Asoke stop) which lets you connect easily to sights, shops and restaurants.

The hotel reception is very nice, with a cool cocktail on arrival. The rooms typically corporate so you can't tell what country you're in - but they are clean, comfortable and have everything you need.

We found this an excellent base for the first 2 nights of our tour of Thailand as it eased us into a new culture bit by bit, away from the bustle of the Patpong and Khao San Roads, but still near enough reality for you to get a good feel for Bangkok.

Bangkok Tip - Visit the wonderful "Cabbages & Condoms" restaurant near the Nana stop of the sky train. Beautiful surroundings, great food, marvellous service and all for a good cause.

The Novotel Lotus is located off a main road, a close driving distance to all attractions and shoping areas. However, the immidiate area near the hotel is not interesting or nice, no nearby shops, restaurants or bars, so anything you want to do requires traveling.
I should mention it is very close to the skytrain station, which is helpful.
The hotel itself is clean and well kept. Staff is very helpful.
I would probably not stay in the hotel again, and look for a more central location like Siam Center next time.
