I was at the St. James for 2 nights this January with my son & I can say that it's 'the best budget hotel in Bangkok. For a few minor upgrades, it could easily be the best place to stay in Bangkok! Size of the Basic Room that we had was maybe on the small side but still adequate. The wooden furnitures could do a fresh coat of varnish and the beds were a little hard. Hallway carpet is stained & permeated with smell of cigarettes--big turn-off. Internet was not free & ridiculously expensive! If you go out the hotel, turn left & walk about 50m, there's an internet cafe after the hotel next to St. James & internet will cost you 60 Baht per hour vs 107Baht at St. James. Overall though, I still would say that St. James is very good value for the price they charge.
