“Nice Lobby but rooms and service are a bit overrated.”
Reviewed 4 September 2009

We stayed at the Dusit Thani in Manila and decided to give this hotel a try.

We arranged for the Hotel Shuttle to pick us up at the airport. We met up with the driver holding a sign with my name and he took us to our hotel in a nice E-Class Mercedes Benz. When we arrived at the hotel, the bell people greeted us and checked our bags in. Check-in did not take long and everyone at the front desk spoke English.

The room was okay for the price. It was a bit small but didn’t matter too much as we spent little time in the room. Included was a breakfast buffet that was excellent. It included everything from eggs, waffles to Thai dishes.

The location of the hotel is great. It was near the subway, and Lumpini Park is across the street. Down the street is a bunch of night markets and the main Red Light District in Bangkok if you want get into a little trouble.

Unfortunately when we here down there, Bangkok was having one of their usual political protest to overthrow the Prime Minister. They decided to take over the airport and no flights were going in and out. Our flight was supposed to leave that Sunday but was delayed for an infinite amount of time. Over 100,000 tourists were stranded. The Thai government offered compensation for each person in the form of free rooms and meals but this hotel didn’t honor it. They could not care less about their guests, only the money they were collecting from them. When asked about the status of the airport protests, they just smiled and didn’t have a clue.

We decide to move to the Holiday Inn down the street and they were much more accommodating. They kept us in the loop about the crisis and had an info booth set up with the major airlines. They honored the government vouchers and gave us free room and meals for the additional 4 days we had to stay there. Next time I’m in Bangkok I’m staying at the Holiday Inn.

Dusit Thani is a nice hotel and good location but will not go the extra mile to please their guests. This is disappointment for a 5 star hotel. For the price, I would recommend staying at the Shangri-La Hotel or Peninsula.

My husband and I recently had the pleasure of staying a few nights at this hotel. From the moment we made the booking over the internet till the time we left, the service was great, the staff most helpful and the rooms and surroundings beautiful. We used the airport pick up service and that was fantastic, we ate at Il Cielo and the Pavilion restaurants and they were both excellent. The position is great, with a very short walk to the skytrain. We also used the tour desk on the lower lobby and they too were extremely helpful and accommodating, as we changed our mind a couple of times. This was not too much trouble for them. A great place to stay in Bangkok.

We upgraded to a club room which offered breakfast in a dedicated restaurant and soft drinks in the lounge during the day. Alcoholic drinks and snacks were available early evening. Public areas on the ground floor/reception are very grand. Would recommend from our experience and will stay there next time.

The Dusit Thani is certainly an institution in Bangkok.

If you compare it to the new generation of 4 and 5 star hotels, it’s slightly dated. They are grander, more spectacular and pamper to the new world traveller. They are all great (the Millennium Hilton in particular), but they lack a certain understated style.

The Dusit Thani has got 'it'. Everything you want in creature comforts, and expect from a hotel of it’s ilk, but without fuss and without pomp. As such it attracts a different clientele. Those who have been travelling the world for years and locals oozing with old money.

The location is fantastic, with a great view of Lumphini Park and only 2 blocks from the madness that is Pak Pong market.

Make sure you get a room with a view of the park and on the upper floors for the views.

The restaurant on the top floor has a great view and wine list, but the prices kill what was a lovely meal. For less money, I'd recommend catching a cab for a meal on the roof of the Banyan Tree Hotel (called Vertigo). You won't regret it - but book in advance.

My wife & I chose to spend our Honeymoon at the Dusit Thani Hotel Bangkok. After a long flight & transfer we received an unfriendly welcome by the receptionist (also no welcome drink was offered). She then took a deposit of 6000 THB from my wife's Visa card without first asking permission, or giving an explanation.
She initially allocated us room 1449 for our Honeymoon stay.
We were shocked at the appearance of this room! It was filthy, very tired & out of date; the bath was old and dirty, the carpet was filthy and all of the light switches were covered with dirty finger stains/marks.
We chose the Dusit Thani Bangkok as it claims to be a 'Luxury 5-Star Hotel', but we were very disappointed with our room as it fell well below the standard advertised. We have stayed in many luxury hotels in Thailand/Asia and this was the worst room we have ever been given, and this was supposed to be our Honeymoon! There was nothing luxurious about the room.
We returned to the lobby and had to insist that the staff find us a cleaner, more suitable room and we were eventually allocated room 405 on the 4th floor,(which was of a reasonable standard).
We felt insulted when we realised this room had been available all along yet the receptionist had ignored our Honeymoon occasion and checked us into the original sub-standard, filthy room on the 14th floor.
We found our experience at the hotel very upsetting.
We would not choose to stay at the Dusit Thani again.
