“Room With A View”
Reviewed 4 January 2014

Nestled right by the Chao Praya River, the Mandarin Oriental (MO) commands a prime position in the city. Our room is well appointed and has a butler service and a partial view of the river. Service is impeccable and prompt. Breakfast on the river terrace is sumptuous and we get to feed the cat fish in the river with stale bread. The river is teeming with fish. The hotel provides complimentary boat shuttle to its Thai Restaurant and spa across the river and to the nearest skytrain station. MO is a destination hotel where one could just relax and enjoy the hotel without venturing into the mayhem of traffic and pollution in the city. Its Chinese restaurant, China House, serves delicious Chinese haute cuisine and the Peking duck is divine. Definitely a great place to stay in Bangkok.

Room Tip: The hotel is built in such a way that all rooms have some view of the river and are great.

I like to share ,after long time,my advise regarding the Oriental Hote Bangkok as one old guest and good friend. I spent there my business and vacation time since i was 16 old for almost 20th years and still is for me the most charming and warming Hotel in the world . Deliciously old-fashioned. Our room was an absolute darling. An unusual little space in the old wing overlooking the pool. Seperate seating area, and seperate tiny study. I chose the older room hoping for more character than in the new building and I wasn't disappointed. It had it's own quirks but they added to the charm. View over the river was well worth paying for! We attended the coooking school and had a wonderful experience. Traditional massages were also an amazing (if kinda painful) experience. Breakfast in our room every morning was divine. Service was amazing. We kept sending out laundry just because it was so decadent and yummy to do so! We got our shoes shined. We did everything this hotel offered us. We loved it.

Only one small negative point: the pool was an absolute zoo, Screaming kids completely dominated. For this reason, if at all possible, try to visit outside school holidays.

Room Tip: The old wing has all the charm. Don't be afraid of the qurky layout you see on the rooms pages...

Stayed there on my first trip to Bangkok. Probably the best location in town - overlooking the river with the Peninsula on the opposite side. Most places of interest are remarkably easy to get to - with the public river boats and the hotel's own river shuttle to the skytrain station

The building itself does full justice to its heritage billing - well-maintained, opulent, with a great sense of character and history. Rooms are spacious and very comfortable; backed up by warm and well-trained staff.

The Verandah does a good mix of local and Western dishes, while there is a more elaborate Thai restaurant on the other side of the river.

An oasis of calm in Bangkok's hustle and bustle.

Old world service and luxury at its best.

We had a large corner suite with a partial view of the river. It was fabulous. From sheets to amenities to snacks to decor- everything was wonderful!

The butler on the floor was surreal. "May I unpack for you" "may I pack for you". Constantly asking to assist with packages or recommendations...even helping us box up a treasure for safe carriage home.

The hotel itself is elegant. A string quartet in the evenings in the lobby. Jazz in the beautiful bar. Guitars outside by the bar-b-que. The pool is a little small but the service and cushions hit the spot. The deck by the river is decorated in beautiful white lights making outdoor dining feel magical.

The service over and over is just beyond anything imaginable. From the driver greeting us at the airport with cold towels and water, to the personal greeting and flowers on arrival, to the constantly refilled water glass at dinner...... It's all perfection.

And finally....did I mention the elevator attendant - who welcomes you to the elevator with a flourish....he even makes getting in the elevator a special event.

The Mandarin is really a special place!

Third time I've stayed here over a period of years and didn't seem quite as special this time. Maybe familiarity breeds contempt.

Still world class and a fabulous experience.

Breakfast in the room high up in the new building with amazing views across the river.

The provide a lovely cot for my infant son too.

Room Tip: All rooms come with your own maid. I think I prefer the rooms in the old building, more character.

I was going back to Bangkok on a business trip a few years ago, and was fortunate enough to invite my father to go along with me. He had never been to Asia before, so after some research, I got reservations for us at this incredibly famous hotel.

From the moment we arrived, we were pampered to the extreme. Before we could get through the door, they gave us both a lei of exotic flowers. The welcoming spirit continued through the check-in process, and we were then escorted to our room. I decided to share a suite with my dad, instead of 2 separate, smaller rooms. So glad I did. It was amazing. More orchids in our room, and the furnishings were beautiful. Since our suite was on one of the upper floors, it had a perfect view of the river.

On the first morning of our trip, we decided to save a little time and have breakfast at the hotel, before venturing out. This was something we ended up doing for the rest of our trip. The riverside breakfast was absolutely perfect! The restaurant had a choice of buffet or menu style breakfast, and luckily, we chose buffet. There was a perfect selection of breakfast items, including dim sum, which made both of us happy. Of course, the view was a bonus, and neat to watch the boats making their way up and down the river. (Just make sure your table is tucked beneath an umbrella before sitting down to breakfast. The heat can rise dramatically in the morning hours.)

The staff were all so friendly and helpful. Our suite even included a butler who was always behind a podium in the hallway. My dad was so curious about him, that he kept opening the front door to see if he was still there, day or night, like he was checking to see if the refrigerator light was still on! Every time he opened the door, the man would stand up and greet my father, then ask if there was something he could do for him.

Unfortunately, I lost my father a few years after this trip, so it will always hold some very special memories for me. It was one of the best moments of our lives.

Room Tip: Rooms on the upper floors with river views can be worth the cost. Definitely try the breakfast, rive...
