“Crown Jewel of Bangkok”
Reviewed 26 January 2014 via mobile

It's hard to imagine a better hotel anywhere, and I practically live in hotels. This hotel is subtle perfection, and offers a serene experience along the Chao Phraya River. There are eight restaurants in the hotel with something for everyone, from French Haute cuisine to Thai, to barbecue, a spa to remember, and a completely Thai experience. For all that this hotel offers, though, it's the services that you'll remember. No hotel on the planet offers better service, for everything from getting in from the airport to room service. This hotel really has no peer.

The exceptional service starts at the actual door of your plane! The special Arrive in Style meet & greet service speedily drives you through the airport, fast tracks through Immigration, then collects all your luggage and whisks you outside to your limo that is waiting right outside the main door of the airport! It could not be simpler, and all be done by very well presented liveried Oriental staff. When the doorman opens your door and you get greeted with "welcome back Mr C, nice to see you again" and it's been 36 years since you last stayed!!! You know that your hotel choice is correct.
All the staff from the front desk to the lift man, and the girls working in the corridor, all address you by name, instantly. The Butler service works like a dream. They really act like Butlers, not just posh room service!
If you get a chance, afternoon tea in the Authors Lounge is a must! Don't do it in the Main Lobby, wait till a day when the proper lounge is free of special events. Le Normandie French restaurant at the top of the old building is also a "must do". Service, cuisine and views are all exceptional!
Let's hope that this Grand Old Lady never changes!!

Room Tip: Go as high up in the building that you can afford, and splash out on a River view

Wow! What a hotel. A beautiful Colonial style building which is extremely luxurious throughout. It has a great setting on the river but what really makes it though are the staff. They are so courteous and helpful. Nothing is too much trouble. One to put on the list of places to stay!

I've just returned from 8 nights at this wonderful hotel where standards of service are faultless. The breakfast on the terrace, the fruit bowl, the orchids and other little treats brought to the room each day were wonderful. The standard of housekeeping and the services of the floor butler were so unassuming that it would be possible to lose sight of how rare this level of service is. There are other hotels that take good care of you but never with the amount of smiling that goes on at the Oriental. Perfectly situated at the heart of this river city it was easy to get more or less anywhere by water...the hotel's shuttle boats were lovely, especially when lit at night. On our last night the evening housekeeper left a neck pillow for each of us to make our home flight more comfortable...The Oriental thinks of everything, and then thinks of something else...all in all, a place to stay if you want to be made to feel very special indeed.
Another reviewer commented on internet access - 15 mins are free each day in the business centre and we found that we picked up wi-fi from the Shangri-La hotel along the way.
Special mention should be made of the showers, possibly the most powerful on the planet.

Room Tip: All rooms have a view of the river, although it may be a 'sideways' view. The main building...

The staff knew us by names, which is great since the staff paid attention to every finer details. The room-service executive and the front desk receptionist were great and provided the best guidance. The Hotel lobby is grand with absolutely spectacular interiors. The decors and rooms oozed out class. We opted for the family room since we were four of us. Me, my wife and two kids. The room was spacious and elegant. Lots of storage space, mini-bar and a great view. The 3 star Michelin restaurants serve some good food and offers exquisite dining experience. The breakfast was complimentary and had a lot to offer. Best of the cuisines. We never left the hotel to venture put for outdoor restaurants. The view of the river from all the Hotel facilities is unparalleled.

In my view, this Mandarin Oriental delivers the essence of colonial era elegance and charm that one associates with the Mandarin Oriental brand.

Although the hotel is fairly old, it is amazingly maintained and all the staff are amazing. The boat across to the spa, restaurant and health club facilities is also an amazing touch. This is why we keep on paying a premium to stay at Mandarin Orientals around the world. They never disappoint.
