What a lovely hotel with excellent staff so happy to be of service and they have made our stay a wonderful experience from pick up at the airport to checking in for departure using their wonderful limousine service. The attention to detail is amazing and an experience from the meeting and greeting you by name with seemless check in to your room and every member of staff smiling and helpful .There is a touch of old colonial style about the place which makes it a cut above the others. A reasonable standard of dress after 6.30 pm brings an air of dressing for dinner which I enjoyed and yet it is casual and not stuffy. Enjoyed the cocktail party and meeting the staff. Food was of a very high standard in the 3 restaurants within the hotel which we tried and 6 were available. I would have liked longer to be able to enjoy them all as they each had a different style. The setting is perfect with access to the River and so travel to all the sights is made very easy. They use the River as a taxi/ bus service which is very easy.

Room Tip: All rooms are very spacious and comfortable with balcony and River view in the modern extension. I...

We had read all about the storied history of this hotel and decided that we wanted to experience it despite the fact that the room rates were double those of other nearby 5 Star hotels. Our experience was mostly good.

The service, for the most part, lived up to the hype with hotel staff addressing you by name and the floor butler greeting you in the room with a delicious and refreshing cold drink. The service staff throughout the hotel, restaurants and spa were courteous and helpful. The restaurants were also very good but at the very high end of the price scale even for this market. Breakfast at The Verandah featured a generous selection of high quality options in a lovely setting next to the river. I was surprised at how small the room was, but it was beautifully furnished and comfortable. Initially, we were very happy with our room location right next to the river, but later as we tried to sleep, it turned out to be very noisy despite double plated windows and blackout curtains. The spa across the river was lovely but not exceedingly grand or memorable.

The Less than stellar aspects of our experience:

-We were not allowed to enjoy many of the 'public spaces' of the hotel due to private functions. We visited over a weekend in early January and encountered no fewer than 6 massive wedding parties monopolizing almost all of the public spaces, keeping guests not associated with these parties almost confined to their rooms. We had to walk through a huge wedding reception (in our street clothes no less) on our way to the spa that took up the entire Sala Rim Naan Restaurant and Terrace for the entire evening late and loud into the night. Also that evening and the next day the entire Colonial Wing and Pool were cordoned off with signs announcing private functions. We had to bust through a wedding reception the following day to visit the Jim Thompson shop located in the colonial wing, again in our street clothes. Later that day we had to invade yet another large gathering of wedding participants on the second floor outside the ballroom on our way to the business center to print out our boarding passes, which brings me to another very irritating part- 20USD a day for wifi in the hotel... for guests already paying top dollar... really??? This should be an embarrassment and needs to stop... now...

-Our parting gift from the Mandarin Oriental occurred after taking a fabulous bubble bath right before we left to go to the airport for our 24 hour flight. As the tub was draining, the entire room filled with a terrible, raw sewage smell. I'm talking EYE WATERING STENCH! I thought I was going to hurl. We could not get out of the room fast enough. After thinking about it in the taxi, we could only conclude that 'La Grande Dame' is prone to bouts of wicked gas after hot baths.

Oriental hotel is still the property to stay in Bangkok, visited 7 years ago and it still brings only the very best to its guests. A magical and finest experience awaits the most discerned guests. Le Normandie restaurant needs to be reserved in advance if possible.
The rooms are first class and the spa is a must if time allows you to relax and enjoy the very best spa treatments and services.
Highly recommended.

The Oriental is a class of its own. There may be hotels that are newer, more modern, higher, etc but they do not compare with the timeless elegance of Bangkok's grand dame. Service is impeccable, food delicious. The decor and furniture of the rooms may be a bit outdated but they are in impeccable condition and your floor butler will be there to assist you at all times. The garden and the pool are small but nice. I absolutely recommend the barbecue you will not find a nicer place to spend your evening. Bangkok does not have the best air quality but sitting on the terrace at the river, having some grilled lobster with a good glass if wine and emjoying the fresh breeze is the best you can do (forget about Nahm, Scirocco, Vertigo and all the other places).

One minus (which makes me deduct one star) - but this was one that we considered annoying - is that the hotel does not offer any complimentary internet and makes you buy it for 24-hour periods. At the hefty prices they are charging for everything, and considering the fact that every restaurant, shop and hotel in Bangkok offers free Wifi, we thought that was quite cheap.

This was during our stay (me and my mother) at Bangkok. It was at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. After reaching upon the hotel entrance, we were greeted courteously by the hotel staff. While bowing down, they greeted us in their mother tongue or native language ‘Sawa dee’ and welcomed us by putting a small flower garland on our wrists.

While entering through the huge glass doors of the lobby, there was some other staff who greeted us too. The hotel lobby is impressive, with its high ceiling and the glass panes which were almost up to the ceiling height. The sunlight through the windows made the lobby look even more vibrant. There was a small water fountain, which had fresh colourful flower arrangements hanging over it. The seating area was spread across very nicely, with different options of tables, chairs and sofas. The grey coloured sofas coordinated well with the maroon coloured cushioned chairs.

We saw that the lobby was beautifully decorated with fresh colourful flowers. There were different flower arrangements done across the flower vases on the tables. There was two housekeeping staff that was monitoring around to see if anything needed to be cleaned, rearranged the cushions on the sofa and adjusted the flower vases. The lobby looked well-maintained and clean.

The concierge, reception and cashier counters were on the right side. While walking towards the reception, each and every staff member cordially greeted and welcomed us.

They have a unique check-in facility. Instead of the usual way of doing the check-in at the reception counter, one of the reception staff escorted us to the lift and later to our room. He asked us how our flight was and whether we were travelling to Bangkok for the first time.
After reaching our room he explained to us the formalities of the check-in, like daily room rate, etc. and requested for our passports. During this time, somebody came at the door. It was the butler who got us our welcome drinks. He too welcomed us and mentioned that we could call him anytime we want by pressing the butler call button, which was near the bedside drawer as well as at the entrance of the room door.

After the butler had left, the reception staff requested my signature on the paperwork and asked us if he could show us the amenities in the room. He guided us nicely and explained everything properly.

We liked the courtesy and warmness of the staff. For them to greet us in their mother tongue or native language was beautiful, as it made us welcomed to Thailand and the hotel. The wonderful idea of check-in made it easier for us to relax in the room, rather than by standing at the reception counter and waiting for the formalities to be done. In this way, we got a chance to know the amenities by the reception staff. It was a totally personalised service.

Room Tip: To stay in rooms far from the elevator and service door, so as to avoid getting disturbed.

Seriously, I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough. We had a two day stay where we checked in at 8am and out at 4pm with no extra charge. The staff are humble and genuinely happy to serve and everything is thought of. Staff remember your name and you are addressed in this way. The room was immaculate and well appointed and the service discreet and professional. Little touches like fruit in the room and a whole cupboard for technology charging make the difference. The beds are extremely comfortable and the breakfast is amazing with enough choice for everyone.

We spent 3 hours in the spa which was amazingly blissful, calming and restorative.

I will on the basis of my stay here, use the brand when I travel again.

Room Tip: You don't need to upgrade to get a decent room. We stayed in a superior room on a high floor. Gr...
