“Flawless service”
Reviewed 13 February 2014 via mobile

Spent two days at the Mandarin Bangkok after taking the Eastern and Oriental Express train from Singapore and before fluing to Siem Reap/angkor.
Mandarin Oriental Bangkok is all what you expect from the Mandarin. We had a split level premier room with butler service. Very good size room. Bathroom was a bit dated but nothing was missing (although no separate shower from bath). Laundry service is excellent. Pool well appointed with very attentive service. Gym on the other side of the river has all the latest equipment. Restaurants on both sides of the river are worth trying. Expensive but again faultless. Transfer to airport in chauffered limousine with chauffeur wearing white uniform and another staff member waiting for you at airport to take you luggage and queueing for you at airline checkin. Again, excellent service.
Overall, we wanted to spend as much time as possible in the hotel, which is good as Bangkok is not a pleasant city. Traffic is horrendous. We visited the Royal palaces in the center and further north as well as a few wats. We had enough after 6 hours and retreated at the hotel for the rest of the stay.

This is my third or fourth visit here, I have to say I wasn't as wow'd as the first few times time however it still rates as marvelous as the first visit.

I always stay in the Mandarin Room, I love the space and the bathroom and lounge area. The little balcony over looking the river is perfect.

I highly recommend the duck curry, I lived in Thailand for a year and I would say that this is the best duck curry I have ever tried. When not staying at the Mandarin and staying with friends I still come here for the duck curry. The breakfast is also amazing.

I used the hair salon for a blow dry and the ladies in there were just lovely, I came in just before closing and all 3 worked on my hair to get it done as fast as possible.

The management staff were fantastic however down the line they just didn't seem as friendly, smiley and helpful as they have been in the past. Still gets 5 stars, still one of the best hotels in the world.

What a lovely hotel with excellent staff so happy to be of service and they have made our stay a wonderful experience from pick up at the airport to checking in for departure using their wonderful limousine service. The attention to detail is amazing and an experience from the meeting and greeting you by name with seemless check in to your room and every member of staff smiling and helpful .There is a touch of old colonial style about the place which makes it a cut above the others. A reasonable standard of dress after 6.30 pm brings an air of dressing for dinner which I enjoyed and yet it is casual and not stuffy. Enjoyed the cocktail party and meeting the staff. Food was of a very high standard in the 3 restaurants within the hotel which we tried and 6 were available. I would have liked longer to be able to enjoy them all as they each had a different style. The setting is perfect with access to the River and so travel to all the sights is made very easy. They use the River as a taxi/ bus service which is very easy.

Room Tip: All rooms are very spacious and comfortable with balcony and River view in the modern extension. I...

We had read all about the storied history of this hotel and decided that we wanted to experience it despite the fact that the room rates were double those of other nearby 5 Star hotels. Our experience was mostly good.

The service, for the most part, lived up to the hype with hotel staff addressing you by name and the floor butler greeting you in the room with a delicious and refreshing cold drink. The service staff throughout the hotel, restaurants and spa were courteous and helpful. The restaurants were also very good but at the very high end of the price scale even for this market. Breakfast at The Verandah featured a generous selection of high quality options in a lovely setting next to the river. I was surprised at how small the room was, but it was beautifully furnished and comfortable. Initially, we were very happy with our room location right next to the river, but later as we tried to sleep, it turned out to be very noisy despite double plated windows and blackout curtains. The spa across the river was lovely but not exceedingly grand or memorable.

The Less than stellar aspects of our experience:

-We were not allowed to enjoy many of the 'public spaces' of the hotel due to private functions. We visited over a weekend in early January and encountered no fewer than 6 massive wedding parties monopolizing almost all of the public spaces, keeping guests not associated with these parties almost confined to their rooms. We had to walk through a huge wedding reception (in our street clothes no less) on our way to the spa that took up the entire Sala Rim Naan Restaurant and Terrace for the entire evening late and loud into the night. Also that evening and the next day the entire Colonial Wing and Pool were cordoned off with signs announcing private functions. We had to bust through a wedding reception the following day to visit the Jim Thompson shop located in the colonial wing, again in our street clothes. Later that day we had to invade yet another large gathering of wedding participants on the second floor outside the ballroom on our way to the business center to print out our boarding passes, which brings me to another very irritating part- 20USD a day for wifi in the hotel... for guests already paying top dollar... really??? This should be an embarrassment and needs to stop... now...

-Our parting gift from the Mandarin Oriental occurred after taking a fabulous bubble bath right before we left to go to the airport for our 24 hour flight. As the tub was draining, the entire room filled with a terrible, raw sewage smell. I'm talking EYE WATERING STENCH! I thought I was going to hurl. We could not get out of the room fast enough. After thinking about it in the taxi, we could only conclude that 'La Grande Dame' is prone to bouts of wicked gas after hot baths.

Oriental hotel is still the property to stay in Bangkok, visited 7 years ago and it still brings only the very best to its guests. A magical and finest experience awaits the most discerned guests. Le Normandie restaurant needs to be reserved in advance if possible.
The rooms are first class and the spa is a must if time allows you to relax and enjoy the very best spa treatments and services.
Highly recommended.

The Oriental is a class of its own. There may be hotels that are newer, more modern, higher, etc but they do not compare with the timeless elegance of Bangkok's grand dame. Service is impeccable, food delicious. The decor and furniture of the rooms may be a bit outdated but they are in impeccable condition and your floor butler will be there to assist you at all times. The garden and the pool are small but nice. I absolutely recommend the barbecue you will not find a nicer place to spend your evening. Bangkok does not have the best air quality but sitting on the terrace at the river, having some grilled lobster with a good glass if wine and emjoying the fresh breeze is the best you can do (forget about Nahm, Scirocco, Vertigo and all the other places).

One minus (which makes me deduct one star) - but this was one that we considered annoying - is that the hotel does not offer any complimentary internet and makes you buy it for 24-hour periods. At the hefty prices they are charging for everything, and considering the fact that every restaurant, shop and hotel in Bangkok offers free Wifi, we thought that was quite cheap.
