“An amazing experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 8 June 2014

My friends and I came to bangkok on route to Phuket. Choosing the Mandarin Hotel was the best thing we did. We had the best service one can ask. The rooms were spacious and the staff really made us feel welcome. The concierge was really helpful as well telling us where to go and where not to.
I would definitely say that this is one of the best hotels I have ever stayed with. I will recommend all my friends here.
Keep up the good work.

You get the high level of finishes, service and location that you expect from the MO in Bangkok. The river view is wonderful and the spa on the opposite side of the river (4min enchanting boat ride from the main hotel complex across the Mekong) is one of the best I have been to.

The rooms are very tastefully decorated and finished to a high standard, yet small. The bathrooms are simply fantastic.

The food is good at both the Thai restaurant and the breakfast restaurant.

Maybe this has to do with the current economic situation in Thailand or just normal, but the constant upselling of services drove me insane. The hotel staff asked several times about providing their car back to the airport instead of a normal taxi. When we finally convinced them that a normal taxi would do, they still tried to upsell to a much higher flat fee taxi ride of THB 500. A normal taxi from the MO to the airport costs THB 350-400. We had to fight for a normal metered taxi.

We were upsold at the concierge when asking about local shopping, always directed to the hotel arcade rather than local/authentic shops.

We were upsold again when asking for quaint/good atmosphere Thai restaurants outside of the hotel, always re-directed to the MO's Thai restaurant.

Room Tip: Rooms are small, but ensure you get a river view room.

We chose to spend the last night of our Thailand trip at the MO as a special treat to ourselves and boy we could not have topped it.

On arrival from the Shangri La (around the corner ha, ha) we were greeted with flowers and checked in promptly. Soon after being shown to our room and completing the check in process, there was a ring at the door and our butler came in with a trolley with a bottle of wine and a stunning cake to wish us a happy anniversary. It was really special.

We had stunning river views. The room was lovely, it was interesting to read the history of the hotel, and we appreciated how the hotel has been maintained to a very high standard by sympathetically preserving its character and charm. The Mandarin Oriental is beautiful. Staff were ALL genuinely professional and courteous.

The sky train is accessible in minutes, by taking the hotel's boat along the river.

We dined across the river at the hotel's Thai restaurant. We had absolutely terrible service from the miserable lady standing at the pier who did not even greet us and then our waiter Jimmy. To be fair no other staff attended to us either and it was a real let down on our last night of our holiday. For example, he kept trying to rush us to order as we sat down, so we ordered starters to maintain some form of control over the pace of delivery - then he came to take our order for mains before even clearing up the table. He did the same by offering desserts before clearing our main!? I don't know why other staff were not assisting because the restaurant was not particularly busy. He kept coming up to tell us, MMMmmm its nice isn't it? Instead of asking and I was particiularly shocked when he started stirring my curry while I was eating saying that's what his mum told him to do. I am not a snob and even dine road side, but I have never had anyone meddle with my meal. It felt like he might as well come to sit with us when he started telling us how much he pays for beer in his local shop and how he goes to sleep after two bottles, of Chang - his preferred beer, as we now know. He was pleasant enough - just needs some training. The staff were clearing up really loudly as if to hint to get out, we weren't particularly late and there was another table of diners. Maybe the staff here feel disjointed to the rest of the hotel because of its location. It is a shame, they ruined our meal.

We did go and have drinks in the Jazz Bar, we were immediately greeted by a warm and friendly waitress and we knew we were back in MO land and in safe hands. Service was excellent.

Back at our room we had the most beautiful flowers arranged in the shape of a heart wishing us a happy anniversary with a handwritten note.

Back to the hotel. It was stunning. It was a real honour and privilege to stay here.

Don't think about it, just book it.

It was sad to order a taxi to "airport please", wish we stayed at the Mandarin Oriental longer. Next time. Perfect to relax for a few days before heading home.

We will definitely return.

Thank you Mandarin Oriental Bangkok, from the bottom of our hearts for making our anniversary so special.

Room Tip: High floor, river views.

Had a memorable stay at the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok. Check-in was a breeze: leaving the taxi I got a warm greeting, a staff member managed to get my name from my baggage tag and passed it along to the reception desk where I was escorted. Then I was escorted to my room and a few moment later the butler came in to present the room and its amenities and leave his business card should I have any request. My baggage was brought rapidly and also a fresh welcome drink. The whole process was executed with a warn attitude, always with a smile.
This warm attitude was consistent among all the staff and make me feel welcomed and helped to make the experience terrific. They were also very attentive to any requests and responded promptly with efficiency.

The room was in the modern building and has a partial view over the river, overlooking the pool. It was spacious for 2 persons, clean and comfortable. Actually I didn’t expected the room to be a modern one, expected more historic “cachet” like the Raffles Singapore. The room had the usual amenities: safe box, fridge, mini-bar, TV, complementary internet (signed up for an account on Mandarin Oriental website).

The fitness centre is opposite the hotel on the other bank of the river. Taking the complementary hotel shuttle takes only a few minutes. The fitness centre is well equipped for walking, jogging, cycling, body building… There is also a sauna, a steam room and a jacuzzi as well. There is a friendly fitness coach ready to help.

A complementary shuttle is available between the hotel and Sathorn pier where Saphan Taksin BTS station is. The ride takes about 5 mins. During the day there is a MO staff member at Sathorn pier ready to call a hotel shuttle. On evening there a security guard from IGG security company who will do it.

There is also a complementary shuttle to Asiatique market - a market by the river with numerous shops and restaurants. The hotel shuttle departs from the hotel pier at 6 pm. The return trip from the Asiatique pier is at 10 pm. The ride takes about 15 minutes.
There is also a complementary shuttle operating between the Sathorn pier and Asiatique market. There is a shuttle every 15 mins and starts operating at 5 pm.

Booked a “stay 3 nights pay 2” package trough the hotel website to experience the MO Bangkok and was very impressed thanks to its terrific staff.

The Mandarin is just an amazing place. It blows all other 5 stars out of the water. It is by far the most thoughtful, detail orientated, relaxing place we have ever been. I only regret not having booked more of our trip here. We will definitely come back to Bangkok, if not jut to stay at this amazing establishment again. There are other hotels on the river but none with the charm and hospitality of this one. It is the best place we've stayed on our Thailand trip and best place we've ever stayed anywhere in terms of sincere service. You won't regret it.

Everyone should stay at The Oriental in Bangkok at least once in their life. It defines style and excellence, and mixes modern comforts with the quiet elegance of its 138-year history. The staff are the friendliest I have seen in any hotel in 40 years of travel. Don't be surprised when the front desk staff greet you by name during your stay as you walk through the elegant foyer. Rooms are tasteful and comfortable. The food is outstanding. Catch the hotel shuttle boat across the river and have a river-front table at the Rim Nam restaurant. Sit by the pool in the morning and have fresh coffee as you listen to the birds and the river boats. Or take life slowly and watch the river from your room while you enjoy the complementary snacks or fruit. This is the way a grand hotel should be.

Room Tip: A standard room, overlooking the pool, is just wonderful.
