Have been going to the Oriental for many years. This trip was again brilliant.Service is one of a kind,Verandah food has got even better and nothing is too much for them. They even managed to give me my favorite room on a floor which was I think supposedely closed.
The other reviews have said it all but I would like to make one comment.Bangkok and especially Bangkok tourism is having a tough time. The Oriental must be complimented by keeping such a level of quality in a very depressed market. They are not cutting corners and on the contrary seem to be getting even better. Will be back.

If cost is not the concern, then this is the place to stay
We stayed on the 14 floor with a river view in the new building, the room was excellent, but the service was special, from the Butler on the floor to the person standing beside the lift that somehow knew what floor you were on even if you didn’tt and don't worry about your room number the Butler will have the door opened before you even get there, but if it's your Birthday it is something else. I am not going to say anymore as it will not be a surprise but let me say this they really go out of their way to make the day memorable. The Thai restaurant on the terrace also owned by the Oriental was just the place on a warm night overlooking the river

This was our first visit to Bangkok so we wanted to get a feeling of the city. Very nice hotel, great location excellent service. Oldest hotel in Bangkok and you can feel it. But being in Bangkok you don't need a modern hotel. It's by the river where you can have breakfast watching the locals go by their work all day long. Their boat can take you across to the spa all day long. Tried the Thai cooking school and had a lot of fun.

We stayed here a couple of years ago, so I cant speak to the construction noise, but at the time of our stay, the hotel was exceptional. We arrived exhausted (with eight children!) to a string quartet playing in a spotless, flower-festooned lobby. As someone mentioned in a previous review, one could easily feel underdressed here if you showed up in shorts and flipflops-its really not a shorts-and-flipflops kindof place! While we weren't sporting backpacking attire, we were sporting a large brood of children that can daunt some hotel management. Not so the Mandarin. The people at the front desk were gracious and welcoming-even to a family of our size. Because of our numbers, we had two two-bedroom suites which they actually, kindly, discounted for us. The rooms were amazing, with panoramic views of the city and the klong. There was a note there welcoming us back -after 20 years! - and the manager also sent us invitations to afternoon tea in the original, historic section of the building, and made one of his employees available to take us for a peek at the historic authors' suites. The rooms were very contemporary but excedingly clean and the AC during this hot season was delicious. The breakfast was also delicious, and elegantly presented on the terrace overlooking the river. The concierge set us up for some fabulous, family-friendly tours of the klong, the palace etc. and directed us to the nearby (and easy to access) monorail and Chattuchak market. Best of all, though, was the extreme luxury of their swimming pools: lying on their amazing pool beds, sipping lime-sodas, enjoying the breeze and watching the boats and the river action was amazing. I realize that this is NOT "typical Thai life" by any stretch, but gracious Thai hospitality IS reknowned and the Mandarin Oriental lived up to that standard in every way.

Like others have written, this is the grand dame of Bangkok's crowded hotel scene. Setting aside the cost, it's a wonderful hotel. Our room was super clean and comfortable. The service was the best anywhere. But setting aside the cost is a hard thing to do given the high price and the relative value that can be found in other hotels in Bangkok. For a quarter of the rack rate here, you can get a larger room in a luxury hotel (4 star versus 5...) in a better location. We don't regret our time here, but we will be returning to one of our other favorite BKK hotels next time. The add-ons like breakfast and wifi are astronomically priced. If you want to flaunt it, definitely come here. But if you want a bigger room in a better location, there are much better choices.

Apart from the aspect of relative value, my only reason for not giving this five stars is construction noise. We were woken twice by the sound of hammers and power drills. They weren't loud, but for a hotel of this caliber, you should expect a silent room.

The hotel staff should be complimented for their amazing service, though. I'm sure if I would've complained, it would've been fixed right away, but I was already up, so we just had a cup of tea and enjoyed the river view.

Room Tip: ask for a room away from the elevator shafts -- the elevators are quiet, but each floor has a servic...

I personally like a modern hotel hence i prefer the Sukumvit property of the Marriott
But if you like oriental this is the place.
From the entrance its green and sprawling driveway and potted plants welcome you with a aromatic lemony fragrance.
The rooms over looking the river are the preferred ones also they have a medium sized balcony to them
lots of cane and bamboo has been used for sculpturing and furniture
Value for money
staff id good
The swimming pool at night is sheer bliss and attractively lightened
A must activity

Room Tip: rooms overlooking the river with balconys
