Not blown away by what is reputed to be one of the world’s best hotels.
Rooms: I was upgraded to a Deluxe Garden Wing room. Decent sized room overlooking the river. A desk in a small separate area. TV not flat screen and bit small for the room size. Saw the River Wing room I had originally booked – smaller and dull design – so yes, this room was better apart from the bathroom.
This was absurdly miniscule, basically a cupboard. And tired. This was perhaps the most notable black mark.
Food: was good. Had some great spicy lobster and local fish. The breakfast by the river is fabulous.
Spa: very special. It’s across the river from the hotel, reached by the hotel boats, which leave every few minutes. It’s an atmospheric traditional Thai-style design with great therapists and fabulous massages.
Pool very good too. Big and pool staff very attentive.
Service: Helpful, bright and swift. You never have to call a lift or open a door – excellent.
Overall, I just felt it lacked a certain something. The old wing has a pleasant feel with wicker furniture and colonial charm, but much of the hotel felt bland and pedestrian. There was a convention, which pretty much took over and gave the place a Holiday Inn feel.
Value: This is much more expensive than most Bangkok hotels. Not sure if it is really worth the premium.
Maybe my expectations were too high. I would go back again – next time with partner and perhaps it would be better.

This is our second trip to this magnificent hotel. Words alone do not say how great the experience here is each time, from the Limousine pick up to the quality of food and the exceptional staff.
We frequently stay in luxury resorts and hotels throughout the world, but this hotel is indeed our no1 favourite. Try it, you will not be dissapointed.

Many reviews have been posted here telling how amazingly good the Mandarin Oriental Bangkok was and we totally agreed with all of that. My review was about the Authors' Suite which is our home away from home in Bangkok.
We have stayed in this hotel for more than 30 times over the last 10 years. We always stayed at one of the Authors' Suites. The four famous suites are Sommerset Maugham, Joseph Conrad, Noel Coward and James Michener. We have stayed in all except the Joseph Conrad. Although a private terrance was added to the room after the hotel major rennovation, we still do not prefer this room.
All four suites were spacious and they were beautifully decorated with a sophisticated Thai theme. There were two experienced butlers, Thavorn and Wanchai. Together with a small team of staff, they treated us like we were members from the Royal Family.
They would do our packing and unpacking. Without being asked, they would take our shoes for shining but always returned them before dinner time. Door to our room was opened for us when the butler heard our footsteps coming up the stairs. When we were not using the room, they would get inside and tidy the place. It was being done everytime we left the room even on the day of our departure.
We have known Thavorn, the daytime butler, for 10 years already. He had in record our preferences and all that we usually requested, which included an extra DVD player in the bedroom, was already set up when we arrived. There was a time that I got bitten by a mosquito inside the room. I told Thavorn before I left for the Spa. When I returned, he did not just kill the annoying insect, he also collected an ointment from the hotel doctor to treat my condition. I was really impressed.
Except for the Sommerset Maugham Suite, there was a flat screen TV with Bose Sound system. Other amenities included welcome champagne and chocolates, fresh flower arrangements, a large plate of fruit, Hermes toiletries as well as daily canapes delivered in the afternoon. Last time I ate a mango from the fruit plate. From that day, the butler brought me a plate of sliced mango everyday.
Our suite was always ready when we checked in even before noon. There was only one time that our suite was still being occupied by the previous guests. Another suite at the Garden Wing was provided so that we could freshen up or rest. All our belongings were moved to our suite for us the moment it was available. Late checkout was never a problem and a request for that was not even necessary. We booked the hotel transfer to the airport so that we were expected to keep the room until our departure time.
The MO Bangkok is well known for its legendary service and they deliver each and every time. The hotel is not modern or chic in appearance. There is also no strong impact at first sight. However, the longer we stayed at this hotel, the more we appreciated the understated elegance of the place. This hotel is a special place in Bangkok. Being treated so nicely, we considered the value for the money that we paid was extremely high.

We had taken a taxi on the 20th of April 2008 from our hotel the Le Fenix Sukhumvit ( see our review here at Tripadvisor on this hotel ) to the Shangri-La and then to the Oriental Hotel Bangkok ( which is now named Mandarin Oriental to come into line with other hotels in this world-famous chain of Luxury Hotels ) with beautiful Shophouse architecture along the way. We made our way through the fantastic lobby via the Bamboo Bar to the famous Verandah Restaurant beside the Chao Praya River ( The River of the Kings ) in Bangkok! Simply splendid and romantic we can tell you, Folks! We had gotten a beautiful place with perfect views onto the river and the other people for some watching ( mostly our fellow guests were aged from 30 up with some families, very gentile and romantic atmosphere ). The Service and presentation was simply sublime all the way we were there for around 2 hours. We have ordered as follows on the day which had a temperature of around 35C and were well shaded with an umbrella. Here it is our meal incl. 2x Evian ( 500 ml ), 1x Iced Tea, 1x Raspberry Milky ( cool raspberry milk - ideal drink! ), 1x Croque Monsieur ( for him ), 1x Wonton Soup ( for her - which was eaten in the traditionell style - photo to proof it, Folks! ), 2x Creme Brulee ( with very nice fruit decoration - an aquired taste however - the fruits that is! ), plus we had as a crowning glory 2x Cold Chocolates. The bill - the grand total - was incl. VAT and Service charge 2930. 73 Baht - around 75 Euro -, thanks for asking! The server was friendly and professional without any stress at all, we could really enjoy the surroundings at this stately grand hotel which came especially handy as one of us ( him ) had his 30th birthday just one day before our visit to the Verandah at the Oriental ( as it was then called )! We made also some good photos from our visit! However we also recommend to visit the magnificent gardens here, take in the superb river views and enjoy the atmosphere which also includes the following we had done here incl. we had visited the Oriental Boutique where we have bought for us the book on the superb history of the hotel, a Logo Magnet as remembrance plus the original Oriental Lemon and Lime soap! We found also direct in the lobby a shop where we had bought an interesting book called " The Strange Disappearance of Jim Thompson " ( many people including us guessing what has happend to the Silk Mogul! ) the book also offers " Stories about Other Expats in Southeast Asia " and their fascinating stories! BTW. Gore Vidal the world-famous author bought this same book also here at the same hotel shop! What a nice surprise! This superb book was written by Harold Stephens, simply sublime! As a memento of our visit to this world-famous hotel we have also bought signature Postcards which show the famous Author' s Lounge and the gardens of the hotel. As some should know the real resident' s are to be found in the gardens and twitcher away since 1997! These birdies are a delight! They even have a birds house with the hotels Logo on it! So watch out! We had a superb and enjoyable time at this hotel and hope sincerly at one time in our life when the time is right to stay here and enjoy more of this hotel in classic surroundings in the heart of Bangkok by the River of The Kings! Please remember, FLY, STAY, EXPLORE! MORE!

Have stayed in many 5* hotels and this is definitely one of the very best. Only thing could slightly fault was room size - not massive and bathrooms could potentially be a tight fit for a large person!
However, that can be so easily overlooked when you think about the superb service, quality food, lovely setting etc etc.

My husband and I decided to splurge on our last two days in Thailand and stayed at this wonderful hotel. It was a fantastic experience. We booked a superior river vew room and it was so beautiful with gorgeous detail everywhere. The pool was magnificent and we spent a relaxing day swimming and laying about in their daybeds. There are so many choices for food, the terrace by the river is ideal for cocktails in the evening, watching Bangkok go by on the water. The breakfast buffet is superb as are all the restaurants, some very expensive, but others very relaxed. The highlight of my visit was afternoon tea in Arthur's Lounge, a very special place to visit, don't miss it. From the moment you walk into the foyer, you know you have come to a special place.
