“Lovely hotel on river, removed from nightlife”
Reviewed 10 July 2013

The hotel is located right on the river. Sometimes, it feels like your room is over the river. The views are very peaceful and relaxing. The hotel is somewhat old, but kept up very well. The staff are generally very pleasant and helpful. The breakfast is pretty good - about what you'd expect for a 5-star hotel (but probably quite expensive if not included in your rate).

The hotel location is very convenient for visiting temples. The surrounding area does not have a wealth of good restaurants, but there are a few. There is a little market just outside the hotel with excellent street food, as well as two minimarkets within easy walking distance. There are a few massage places; they are slightly higher-priced than elsewhere in Bangkok, though still cheap. The free shuttle boat (on the hour and half past) takes to you the BTS, where there is a small shopping mall with a Robinson's, Tops food court, KFC, and McD's.

The location is not especially close to the skytrain, although the aforementioned boat shuttle takes you there in about 6 minutes. And taxis are cheap. Near the 7-11 there are minivans that will take you to Siam square very cheaply.

The decision is basically whether you want beautiful river views and temple access, or whether you want to stay near the center and all the nightlife. It's easy to make occasional trips to the center, but it would get tiring if you planned to do it every day.

Laundry Tip: If you turn left just before 7-11, turn left down the small soi. After about 30 meters you will find a small laundry shop run by a very nice lady named Noi. The shopping doesn't look like much, but her prices are probably less than 1/10th of the hotel's price, and she always did a great job for us.

Stayed here for three nights and we were impressed. Apart from the fact that our bags seemed to get lost somewhere between the reception and our room when we arrived (we had to call reception twice to chase them - wouldn't have been an issue normally but we'd just got off an 11 hour flight and were desperate for an uninterrupted nap!) the service was good. Concierge desk staff were very helpful and we found all their recommendations were spot-on. We were on the 18th floor overlooking the river and the views were amazing, especially at sunset. There is also a ferry stop immediately outside the hotel, which is really convenient as a lot of the major tourist sites are along the river so it was easy to hop on and off. The breakfast was pretty mind-boggling (the buffet included just about everything you could possibly imagine) and we ate in the Thai restaurant in the hotel on the day we arrived, which was expensive but alright, and had some entertainment (a dance group doing traditional Thai dancing) which was very cute. Overall pretty good for a city hotel.

ARRIVAL: First-timers to Bangkok may think "Oh, my God ! we've been kidnapped !" as their driver threads through a labyrinth of neglected streets on approach to the Sheraton; but, hey, this is the city of contrasts and soon enough you're welcomed into the splendid calmness of the Hotel's stately lobby.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS: The Royal Orchid satisfies every covetous need in spacious comfort: admittedly the Hotel is a brand, rather than a hip hideaway - but don't we all secretly love anonymous convenience and Starwood efficiency ?

This isn't soulless, homogenised luxury though: the personnel are all-smiles and keen to please; the Hotel itself stands on an enchanted riverside setting.
Amazingly, despite countless hordes of people passing through each year, some of the staff actually remember you - and do their utmost to ensure personal attention.

ROOMS: All have river-views; though it is worth splurging for better rooms, on higher floors. We normally opt for a corner suite with wraparound, panoramic views.

DINING: The first meal of the day is an impressive smörgåsbord of international cuisine: everything, from pain-au-chocolat to dimsum, is provided.
It can be a confusing mêlée for some - many of the guests move like confused Daleks; but we're breakfast ninjas and don't find the process problematic.

DRINKS (inside): At the pleasant lounge bar - served by Bond girl waitresses.
DRINKS (outside): By the glittering Chao-Phraya, listening to ambient grooves from the Sambal bar/restaurant.
The riverside, on balmy evenings, possesses an insouciance not found City-side.
Mind you, some of the guests have adopted the alarming habit of putting ice in their red wine (euw !)

CLIENTELLE: Good conference facilities means there are gaggles of journeyman, conjoined with their phones.
Unfortunately, I'm a human magnet for boring businessmen banging on about their tedious jobs (as if I care).
Most of the guests, though, are the usual global mix of polite holidaymakers - apart from certain nationalities, who pile into the lift, before you've had a chance to get out ( and then wonder why you're suddenly shoving them out of the way)

PAMPERING: The Hotel has a sleek spa, with capable masseuses and ethereal treatments.

POOLS: Two outdoor pools: The upper one is functional and catches the rays all day long - with a great river view. The lower one is more resort-like, in a pretty garden setting (they even have peacocks in residence).

OVERVIEW:
1) The ROS is an unfailing Hotel with excellent facilities and commodious rooms.
2) The personnel are friendly and organised.
3) Every half-hour the Hotel provides easy water transit to Saphan Taksin (for City destinations) and Sathorn Pier (for river destinations)

This Sheraton could be viewed as yet another generic, high-capacity Hotel; but it has several redeeming features, including views to die for.
We have enjoyed many happy, untroubled stays; and for us, it is a dependable, welcoming hug of a Hotel.

We got to stay 2 days at this hotel whilst in Thailand and it is a great place to stay. We stayed on the 22nd floor and the view of the river and the rest of the city was unreal. Night time was really special as the lights of the city were beautiful and the river traffic was lit up really well and the disco scene is still alive and kicking on some big boats that run up and down the river.
The staff were fantastic and and very attentive to all ours needs whilst we were there and nothing was a problem. They were very helpful in getting us meals after hours and extremely helpful getting us a taxi to the airport that actually had seat belts. Seat belts we found out were not a necessity in cars in Thailand.
We went to a massive shopping centre via taxi with seat belts but we came home in a tuk tuk and it had no seat belts but the driver was extremely good and very careful. The shopping centre was a city on its own it was so big and had everything from rolls Royce, Maserati , Porsche Lamborghini cars, and many others to a tv studio in the middle of the centre. So many people and so many food stores with food we had never tried before and it was very nice and very tasty.
The hotel had some of the most beautiful orchid displays I have ever seen and they had a group called the Bangkok Beatles.
The food was really great at breakfast with a wide selection of western and eastern foods and the waiters were great and attentive.

Room Tip: When you come from the airport and you travel the freeway to the hotel and when you come off the fre...

I stayed at the Sheraton with a friend for 4 nights in June 2013. From the lovely foyer and beyond everything was lovely. It is set on the river and it is lovely to sit outside watching the boats go by. We had a twin share room, it was very clean and comfortable and we had a lovely view of the river from our room. Buffet breakfast was included which was very substantial, even had gluten free bread and muffins, which is the first I have come across. We ate in the hotel twice and had beautiful meals both times. The bar on the ground floor is great too. There are 2 pools and a swim up bar to one of them. Overall the stay was great, the only problem was it wasn't long enough. The staff were very helpful and did their best to make the stay great.

We stayed here for 3 nights before going south. The hotel is located near the main sightseeing places (20m by boat to the Golden Palace- the boat stop is exactly near the hotel).

The room was clean. Breakfast was good with wide selection of nearly everything, you can almost find anything you want to eat (who wants Sushi in the morning?).

The best aspect of the Sheraton for us was the concierge service, they were amazing! extremely helpful and friendly. They gave us a lot of tips before setting off on any trip and recommended a lot places to visit. Big thank you to all involved in this department.

The only disadvantage was the cost of the internet, nowadays you should get a free WiFi with the room (the Sheraton gives you free access in the lobby area only).
