Over the years we have stayed at this hotel and love all the employees and services. They really try very hard to please. The location is really off the beaten path. In years past we have busied ourselves shopping at River City, which is a skybridge away, during the heavy rains but most of the shops are gone and you are left with nothing to do when it rains. So if you are looking for the hustle and bustle of the streets and shopping this is not the hotel for you. If you want to relax this place is perfect.

I booked this hotel through Yeego and got an excellent deal. Its location is great and the rooms all have great views, breakfast included which was extensive. Close to River City for boat trips, shops and some resturants. Close to the River Express pier, taxi's and Tuk Tuk's nearby for further afield. Service was excellent and with a genuine friendly smile. The rooms were great with the biggest bed I think I have ever slept in. There wassome renovation work so we could not use their river terrace which was a shame but we knew about this before we travelled

Me and my husband stayed here for 3nights. We had 10days stay at Ko Samui, which was relaxing, we were very much looking forward to stay at Bangkok for shopping. We arrived on the 2.10.09, as soon as we stepped into the hotel we were so amazed at the deco. The staff were so friendly at reception. Then we were told that our room had been upgraded which made it even more special. We were taken to our room, which was on the 26th floor, and the view from our room looking down at the river was just breath taking. The staff here are so friendly they go out your way to make your stay as enjoyable as possible. We had complimentry lunch followed by complimentry drinks in the evening. We cannot fault this hotel in any way at all, I would recommend this hotel to any family/friends and to whoever is reading this, as we would defiently go back ourselves. may we take this opportunity to thank all the staff.

I am always amazed at the incredible value of this hotel, and shocked more people do not talk about it. The rooms have awesome views of the river, the staff is great, the surrounding area allows for convenience (7/11), shopping (clothing and jewelery), and touring (boat dock and shuttle to skytrain). It seems since it is in the older part of Bangkok and not next to a skytrain - people are less excited about it. But for about half the price of the Sheraton or Westin in Sukhumvit area - I get IMHO a much better experience. I forgot to get the name of the women staffing the fitness center - but she was incredibly friendly and personable and even went out of her way to see if my rooom needed to be switched due to the view being slightly obstructed with some maintenance going on. Just want to say khup khun khrup! Only complaint is the very high price for internet service in the room.

We spend 5 days here at the royal orchid and enjoyed the hotel situated on the river watching the world go by before moving on to Wau Hin for two weeks. Our time at the royal orchid was fantastic the staff were lovely the food was great I can not praise it enough, we only had breakfast but there was every thing you could think of we found it a bit expensive to eat or drink there as we were on a tight budget but it was the best hotel I had ever been to, there were plenty of places to eat and drink in Bangkok which was also amazing easy to get to the main centre by taxi or tuc tuc

Spent two nights here en-route to Koh Samui and would recommend it as a stop over hotel.
Not a great deal of amenities in the immediate vicinity although the street cafe to the left as you leave the hotel is excellent value and the Sala restaurant in the River Gate centre next door was pretty good too.
We used the river taxi at the back of the hotel to get up to the Grand Palace area and at 13 baht each way it was a bargain. You also get great views of the city from a different angle so well worth it. If you do use the boat, make sure you but some Jasmine from the old dear at Tha Tien boat stop - 10 baht and it made the room smell lovely. Also the lovely lady selling water and beer from a cool box at a fraction of the price you pay elsewhere. She knows the timetables off by heart and it makes her day if you buy a drink off her.
Also had a wander down to Vertigo bar which is about a ten minute walk and a great if expensive place to view the city at night.
Food at the hotel was good, rooms comfortable and very clean, staff very friendly so would recommend it as a good place to base yourself unless you want to go shopping in which case look at hotels near the sky train.

This hotel gives an excellent view of the river from almost all rooms. As the hotel is being renovated guests can get a good deal. Most guests are tourists on package deals anyhow and they stay only one or two nights. For tourists with no experience of the better hotels in Asia this is quite a good hotel. It used to be a good hotel for businesspeople but I have not seen them now. Unfortunately it is far away from where the action is. You need to take a taxi to get to more central locations. This will cost Baht 60-100.
There is a so-called ' shopping centre' (River City) next to the hotel but it does not deserve that name. (I think they advertise with Thailand in day' . Forget it. Lots of shops are vacant. There are mainly (on all floors!) shops that sell copies of antiquities. Do not expect real antiques there.

There used to be a dozen of more tailor (measuring) shops and now only 3 or 4 are left and there is practically no business going on. This means their prices are almost double the price as elsewhere in Bangkok as they still have to pay high rents. Of course they are not real tailors but just measuring agents who send your measurements to factories to be cut and sewn. In general in this centre the quality is less than average and the prices are more than average.
There are also 4 or 5 restaurants that used to be crowded but now have only 3 or 4 customers a day. A fancy French restaurant does not use butter but a substitute: difficult to make a sauce hollandaise for sure.
In general the quality of the restaurants is also lower than average. How do they keep ingredients fresh? They used to be a lot better but that does help you much.
It is not really bad but it does not invite.

The hotel has renovated most its rooms but they still look a bit dated. Nevertheless: everything is there. Cleaning could be better but it is certainly not dirty. Staff is helpful and friendly. Background music is a bit unusual like country and western or Spanish music in the elevators or sort of new age music in the restaurant. I mean, not really Thai.
The lighting in the rooms is very confusing and it may take a few days to find out what switches are to be used for and you are not going to stay that long. It is not logical so you would want some labelling. But these are minor problems.

As long as the rates are competetive and you have no need to be in the centre it is not too bad.
There is virtually no shopping area nearby so take a taxi or walk for about 30 - 60 minutes.
Most of the restaurants of the hotel are temporarily closed, or will be closed. The pool needs renovating badly.
