“Beautiful 5* hotel, with nicest pool in Bangkok”
Reviewed 13 May 2007

The Plaza Athenee Bangkok is simply an oasis of tranquility in the bustling heart of Bangkok. The location might be the most functionally practical of any of the top hotels in Bangkok, right in the heart of Wireless Road, just 100 meters from Sukhumvit Rd. and the Ploenchit BTS station on one side, and the All Seasons place shopping center on the other side. It's got all of the luxury, amenities, and outstanding service one would expect of a top tier 5* establishment in the highly competitive Bangkok market, with large, beautifully appointed rooms. The hotel's restaurants are excellent, but pricey, but several very good but more reasonable options are available in the nearby All Seasons Place and Ploenchit shopping centers. But aside from the excellent location, and the expected luxury and service, the Plaza Athenee's best features are the excellent fitness center and the superb, well located, spacious swimming pool, which is probably the largest pool in any hotel in Bangkok, and which certainly provides an appreciated respite from Bangkok's hot, humid climate. The hotel is located quite near Bangkok's legendarily notorious nightlife, but unlike some other nearby choices like the J.W. Marriott, Sheraton Grande, Landmark, or Westin which are right in the midst of it, the Plaza Athenee is just far enough removed so that one need not see this activity at all if you choose not to, but it is just a moderate walk or short BTS ride away if you are curious about it.

Great location, fabulous staffs. 1st time to stay in 1st week of April at Plaza Athenee, A Royal Meridien Hotel because was unable to book at my regular hotel as been recommended by my office's colleague. I made the right decision to take my colleague's suggestion and will definitely return my stay at this hotel; not previous hotel anymore because of service standard and the most important is STAFF that made me feel like I am staying at home that I never had this experience in any where/any hotels. Greenary road that I never fine/think there will be having this kind of road in the heart of BKK City.

Will definitely return and congratulation to the management that they have FABULOUS STAFFS.

This is a very solid business-style hotel about a 5 minute walk from the Skytrain. The rooms are spacious, with comfortable beds and a convenient bedside control panel for the lights and climate control system. The bathroom has separate tub/shower, and the shower was quite good, with good water pressure and lots of space. The toiletries were quite nice as well.

We used the pool early one morning. In many ways, the pool area here was the best urban pool spot we encountered, apart from that of the Oriental. The pool itself is tiled in dark blue tile, which gives the whole pool a very inviting feel. The chairs were quite comfortable and there seemed to be plenty of help.

Though we didn't have time to look at the gym, we did have a look. It's nothing special, though certainly fulfills one's needs.

Overall, the level of service here was high.

When you don't want to stay on the river--and in some ways, staying off of the river gives you a better sense of the actual city--this is a good choice, particularly given its location near the Skytrain.

Recently lodged at the Plaza Athenee. The hotel thinks of itself as a 5* hotel but sadly in reality it works as a 4* hotel. Although the hotel is pleasantly fragranced with the scent of lemongrass throughout, the hardware falls short of expectations at a Plaza Athenee and a Le ROYAL Meridien establishment.

However, one outstanding thing about the Plaza Athenee is the honesty and integrity of its staff; a million thanks to Suchart (who wore a ‘Chubb’ nametag) and the rest of the team who orchestrated the hastened return of my wallet (of which they found and me, who unknowingly dropped it). It certainly shows their utmost level of honesty! Incidentally, the General Manager as well as the upper management of the Hotel were present at the time.

I can’t have more praise for Sidar, the Concierge cum doorman, who ALWAYS ENSURED we got our bearings right before we set off to explore Bangkok.

Both Sidar and Suchart have certainly demonstrated excellence in their service and integrity and have definitely made up for an otherwise average stay in a supposedly 5-star establishment. Other staff have been pretty unfriendly and unwelcoming during my stay at the Plaza Athenee, probably because they think of their hotel as an establishment for the upper echelons of society or the Bourgeois *winks*. I was in Bangkok for leisure and was decked out in tees, bermudas and flip-flops most of the time; so that probably was the factor of having those dirty looks and feeling of reluctance from the Staff.

The rooms (as seen in Candid Photos) are none too spectacular but thoroughly satisfied given the very cheap rate. Furnishings could be improved especially with chipped edges, worn towels and bed linen, and vandalised stationery holders if fellow guests are paying a higher rate. Turn down service was a bit of a joke as they use napkins from the restaurant as placemats for the slippers (see picture)!

Breakfast wasn’t all too enticing. This might be due to the off-peak season. Buffet spread wasn’t all too appetisting and very limited; cut fruit portions are measly and the presentation of it makes it look rather unappetising.

Would I stay at the Plaza Athenee again? Only if the hotel standards correspond with the price paid. Go to the other Starwood hotels in Bangkok (Westin Grande Sukhumvit and Royal Orchid Sheraton) if your budget is around this level cos’ you definitely deserve more if you’re paying a premium price; although I’m excited to learn about the upcoming Le Meridien in Bangkok!

The location of this hotel is quite close to Chit Lom and Ploenchit BTS is a less than a tad 5-minute walk. When staying here, do inform the cab driver that it is situated on Witthayu Road, as how most cabbies would know it by.

Nice location, close to much of Siam Square and the BTS. We checked in without any hassles and recieved a decent room facing towards Chinatown/River area and the 24th floor. There is a tower being built right next door, so there is/was some construction noise, but was not too bad. The room was standard Meridian fare geared towards "business luxury" and was very comfortable. Not really geared to the tourist market. No complaints, just not excited either.

I stayed only one night, January 1st. After the New Year's Eve bombings in BKK, security was very tight, our taxi was searched before it was allowed on the premises. Fine by me!
Check-in for my Club Floor reservation US$200/night, which was actually CHEAPER than a basic room-only rate at the Sheraton or Westin nearby, maybe because it was over the holiday) was in the Club Lounge. Very relaxing, friendly, smooth check-in. My room was actually on the same floor, about 20 feet down the hallway. Well-decorated, with huge flat-screen TV monitor. It wasn't working well when I checked in, but after a call there was a technician there to fix it.
Free WiFi in the Lounge; in hotel rooms there was a charge.
Decent snack selection at Happy Hour (like 6-8pm?) in the lounge, with free alcoholic beverages.
Morning breakfast can be taken in either the club lounge (relaxing, quiet, but not as much selection), or in the buffet restaurant downstairs (huge selection, but of course busier and noisier). Wasn't addressed by name much if at all, maybe by one staff member, during my stay.
Fitness Room and Pool are highlights here--while the Sheraton Grande Sukhumvit boasts a really nice pool design, it is tiny, and when the hotel is full it's a crazy place, and you're laying on concrete, at least over the New Year period. Here it feels much more open and relaxed. Gym offers both cardio and weights, all very well maintained, with floor-to-ceiling views of the outdoor pool.
In general, if you pay for the Club President Rooms (decently-priced, for my stay only about $35/day more than basic room-only rates for "superior" rooms) you can't go wrong.

I stayed here for a week in August 2006. The sweeping lobby was wonderful, and nicely appointed. The business lounge was excellent, handled my arrival professionally and without fuss. The morning buffet was OK, and the business lounge was rarely occupied by more than a couple people. The room was very large, with a sweeping view of the city. Construction next door, however, was a minor detraction. However, the noise never carried into the room.

I was surprised that the executive suites did not offer wireless internet in room, but this was available in the business lounge. I was also surprised that almost every staff member I passed addressed me by name, although I may have been the only American in the hotel at the time! The location is quite secure, with the British and American embassies across the street.

The night bazaar (if that's your thing) is a quick cab ride south, and the skycar (light rail) is a one block walk. The restaurants in the hotel are adequate.

Overall, I think you can get better accomodations for the money. The price was rivaling the Oriental, but the appointments and service were not even close. It's worth the stay, but you're not getting a deal.
