The Peninsula Bangkok
Ranked #10 of 891 Hotels in Bangkok
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 31 October 2013

My friends and I had spent the first night of our Bangkok experience on the club level of the Shangri-La across the river, and though I can not say anything bad about the Shangri, the Peninsula is just on another level all together. We wanted to end our trip on a bang and were definitely not disappointed.
We took advantage of the Amex Fine hotels and Resorts offer that included a free third night when booking two. We booked into a Grand Deluxe Suite and asked about any further upgrades. The desk clerk was very helpful and sent our inquiry on to the general manager who said that the Peninsula suite would be available after 5. We asked if we could tour it before making any decisions and later in the day we did just that.
All I can say is wow, wow, wow. It was the suite of a lifetime. We decided to pool our money together and stay like royalty. The only problem was we didn't want to leave to do anything else! Every room had surround sound, mini bar, and fine art and antiques. It was over 4000 square feet and we took advantage of every part of it. I would say, however, that our original suite exceeded all expectations and would have been an extraordinary experience in and of itself.
The hotel has a beautiful pool with great food and drink service. The spa is small, yet adequate. We made sure to enjoy the hot tubs and cold plunges every day. People have said that the hotel is on the wrong side of the river, but we just hopped on the ferry and found it to be super easy, and very cool. Much of what to do is across the river and the shuttle service runs continuously all day. There is a shut down time, so make sure to ask before heading out for late drinks at Lebua, etc.
Also, we took a few tours arranged by the Concierge and our guide ( Pong ) was superb. I would highly recommend him: his command of english was excellent as was his eager attitude to capture everything on film for us. A++
Also, the food at the hotel was perfection. I would highly recommend the breakfast buffet. We had it included in our amex package, but the food was second to none. We thoroughly enjoyed having it overlooking the river. It was incredible.
The peninsula makes you never want to stay at another hotel ever. The staff is excellent, the amenities are plush, and you leave with an experience to last a lifetime.

We started our trip at the Peninsula for 3 nights in Bangkok - pricey hotel, but you really do get what you pay for, what a great hotel!

The room was a good size with great views of the river, and although they are not super modern, they have a lot of mod cons for added convenience that make you feel you are in a truly 5* hotel. The servicing of the rooms was also excellent with a welcome chocolate cake and new fruit trays every evening.

On the first night, we ate dinner very late due to landing in Bangkok in the evening - we ordered a soup and a pad Thai dish from from the lobby restaurant. Probably the best soup and pad Thai we had during our 2 week trip in Thailand. We also dined at their other Thai restaurant - which was ok, not amazing though.

The breakfasts were also exceptional with good choice and great coffee (always a sign of a 5* hotel in my book - great coffee!). The breakfast seating area on the river was beautiful.

The fitness centre was great, visited each day during our stay and had the Jacuzzi, Sauna and Steam rooms to myself on each occasion.

The above aside, what really makes the Peninsula Bangkok a true 5* is the service by all their stuff. This was especially true when compared to other "5*"s in Bangkok, i.e. the Shangri La across the river which we stayed in during our trip - not comparable.

If I was to be picky then I'd say the only thing that was slightly disappointing is a couple of the cocktails we had during one of our dinners, they weren't well made.

Exceptional and will definitely return the next time we are in Bangkok.

Wow this hotel is something else. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left the staff at the Peninsula turned handstands to meet our every need. It had been our 20th anniversary and when we arrived immediately they congratulated us and took us up to the room where a member of staff arrived with a card and a beautiful chocolate box of hearts. We had a balcony room overlooking the river with fantastic views of the Chao and loved watching the boats and life outside. The room itself was amazing, just total luxury everywhere from a tv in the bathroom to you melting into the pillows and bedding at night. We ate in the chinese restaurant the first night as the thai had a private function which was a little disappointing as we had been really looking forward to a meal there that eve but The food was stunning, cantonese and just melted in your mouth. The hotel arranged all our boat trips and meals and trips out to other places with such ease, really nothing was too much trouble. After a day out at the grand palace (500bhatt entry) and river long boat ride (800 bhatt for an hour) we took a tuk tuk back and had a 'Breast Cancer Support Afternoon Tea' (800 bhatt per person).. all pretty pink cakes and delicious scones and savoury sandwiches, etc . The hotel supported breast cancer with alot of their services throughout the hotel which i was over the moon about having falling ill with it myself last year it was great to see that support. We took a lovely sunset trip up the Chao River at 5.30pm one eve with afew other couples and were served never ending cocktails and thai canapés and snacks well worth 1200 bhatt each for this experience. The hotel did a free shuttle boat across the river and a boat service shopping trip to Asiatique dropping off 7pm and picking up 10pm .. well worth a visit and free of charge. Breakfast was included and was out of this world, everything you could wish for and sat alongside the river watching the world go by. We spent one whole day chilling by the swimming pool, again right next to the river which was so relaxing and yummy food/snacks and drinks available all day. Thank you Peninsula for a wonderful experience and stay at your hotel we had the best time and your staff were wonderful. We look forward to our next visit!!

Our room, the general amenities and the service were all excellent. We enjoyed sitting by the resort-like pool after a long flight. One section of the pool is 25 metres long - good for excercise. We appreciated the free on-demand shuttle across the river to a good shopping area. The spacious grounds with a bar and restaurant right beside the river are very attractive. This hotel is highly recommended.

Room Tip: Our room, the general amenities and the service were all excellent, as we had expected. The pool ar...

Check in was easy, I felt important as i checked in. The room was perfect, I mean perfect. Bathroom was better than any I have ever seen. Just WOW the curtains to the balcony were electronically controlled. My wife had a dressing room to herself, and I had a large desk with internet to work at. The view of the city and river was out of a magazine. They have n amazing breakfast , suited for any culture, I had a French omelette made to perfection and several pastries, again perfect. The hotel is across the river from mainland Bangkok and they have a shuttle every 10-15 minutes. We went on the sky train and were in downtown in 5 minutes. Wonderful experience.

Room Tip: None Better.

We were extremely impressed with the Peninsula Hotel while staying in Bangkok. The service was superb, the room was beautiful and the amenities were fantastic. Sitting at the gorgeous pool, you wouldn't even know you're in Bangkok. The boat service across the river was also very convenient given the traffic in Bangkok. I would not hesitate to stay at the Peninsula on my next trip to Bangkok.

Beautiful hotel, but if booking through Amex Fine Hotels and Resorts was informed no upgrade above grand deluxe room. Hotel was not full and they still didn't upgrade us. Save your money and do not book above this level if you want to be upgraded. Very disappointed in not receiving the upgrade at this level.
