The Sukhothai Bangkok
Ranked #35 of 896 Hotels in Bangkok
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 2 May 2011

We spent a week in Thailand (Bangkok/Pattaya) in April and the first three days of our vacation were booked with Sukhothai. Our flight from Mumbai was landing early morning and since the hotel did not confirm the early check-in request at the time of the booking, I was worried we will have to spend the couple of drowsy hours in the hotel lobby with a kid till the normal check-in time. But on reaching the hotel, the hotel not only allowed early check-in but also upgraded us to a suite. And what a luxury it was for the price of 6000 thb! The bathroom was the size of a room with two separate basins, shower cubicle and a bath tub. There were two toilets in the suite. Daily fruit basket, chocolates, nice coffee machine with refill capsules were all complimentary.
The location of the hotel is also reasonably good. Its a 15 min walk to Sky train station and Patpong market.
Post our stay at Bangkok, we were to travel to Pattaya. I checked with hotel concierge and they arranged a Toyota Camry at a price of 1000 thb for travel to Pattaya. Later I realised that Marriott was asking for 2800 thb for some vehicle to travel back to Bangkok. Even if I would have negotiated with a taxi guy on the street, I could not have got such a good deal. So Sukothai was kind enough not to charge us 200% markup on arranging a taxi with them like other hotels.
Two items that Sukhothai can work upon - 1. Room/suites: I could not find enough spare power points in the room for charging mobile/camera battery. To plug in my charger, I needed to plug out a lamp or a coffee machine. The bathrooms didn't have a latch, so it was manageable as I was travelling with a close family but could have been a serious issue if travelling with extended family.
2. Service: The room service maids/waiters and bell boys need slightly more English skills and were a little pushy. We wanted some creamer/milk for tea and we had tough time explaining it to the room service. On first instant, cream was sent and on second instance full jar of milk. And the room service maids/waiters would straight walk in to your room upon opening the door without waiting for you to allow them in.
Overall, our experience in Sukhothai was so luxurious that our rest of the stay in Thailand in the next two hotels paled before it. Our room in Marriot, Pattaya almost looked like a two star room against Sukothai room and later even the Grand Deluxe upgraded room at Sheraton Grand, Bangkok had a tough time matching it to Sukothai Suite.

Stayed for a week to celebrate our 40th anniversary, bottle of fizz deliveryed to us 10 minutes after checking in. We were lucky enough to be upgraded to a small suite. amazing amount of space looking out onto the gardens. Everything was top quality from espresso machine in the room to the 25m pool.

The public areas are decorated in an minimalist fashion with nothing to take the attention away from the wonderful Buddahs and small stuppas that dot the hotel.

The bakers shop is excellent for bread and cakes if you are like us on a budget and not taking the optional buffet breakfast. We ate at the Celadon restaurant one night, amazing Thai food served in luxury surroundings. We were lucky enough that a 2* Michelin chef from Tokyo was visiting the La Scala restaurant so another great meal.

We stayed in a Deluxe Suite which was perfect for us - well appointed and with all the features you can dream of. Huge bathroom with tub - the rubber ducks were a smash hit with my daughter! Breakfast is unbeatable and in a great setting - come around the 2nd day and the staff remembers your name and your coffee preferences from the day before - makes you feel welcome.
In general the staff was super friendly and helpful - especially the pool staff ensured that we always had cool drinks in between swimming in the pool. This is a great hotel if you are traveling with kids - they will enjoy the facilities!

We tried both the Thai restaurant (dinner) and Italian (lunch) - both are highly recommendable - the food was impeccable and the service great and personal - we especially liked the Ipad menu with pictures of the various dishes... The Thai restaurant has won several awards and it was clear why!

The Spa is hidden away in the back garden in a quiet corner of the hotel which is a great place and gives a certain tranquility. We tried the thai massage which was great after a long overnight flight - again, personal service and always a smile.

You know when you've found a home away from home, admittedly we've been here many times, however not for over three years and to here those happy words by many staff over our stay makes you relish this sanctuary even more.

Stayed 2 nights in deluxe suite with our two young children (ages 3 & 5). Service was outstanding and loved how when you went to the pool they came immediately with your towel and drink. The children felt so important as the staff were always talking to them and asking how their day was. With small children we ate room service at night and found the food very YUMMY. As free mini bar was included we mainly drank beer or softdrink so cannot comment on any other beverages they offered. Breakfast was a fantasy for the children as there was so much variety. I know most hotels do a buffet breakfast but the chef's do such a excellent job as i found the food was A+. Hotel was probably the most expensive compared to the other hotels in thailand we stayed at on this trip but it was ALL worth it. Nothing to fault.

Began our trip to Thailand with the first stop in Bangkok. Driving through the dirty, humid streets of Bangkok we were relieved to arrive at the Oasis known as the Sukhothai hotel. We were greated by friendly staff who were extremely accomodating and ushered us into a beautiful modern room. The room was state of the art with flat screen TVs, bose sound system, comfortable bed, touch screen panels for lighting and service by the bedside. Even the bathroom was state of the art: huge rain shower (big enough for 2 people comfortably) and toilet with several buttons that perform different things( i will leave u to explore the function of these buttons)

The breakfast (included) was excellent and diverse with fine cheeses, cured meats, made to order etc.. They delivered twice daily truffles of different varieties and a fully stocked mini bar with free alcohol. Any time we needed to arrange an excursion or taxi the staff organized everything so it was flawless complete with return instructions on a card.

This truly is a 5 star hotel and i would recommend it to anyone who wants to experience Bangkok first class
