“Thai elegance”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 November 2011

Bangkok is well endowed with classy and inexpensive 5-star hotels. Prominent among them - but not unique - is the Sukhothai.

It is located in the center of Bangkok, but not within walking distance to any notable attraction, street corner or subway station. Very good with car transportation, not ideal for tourists.

From the outside, the excessively plain decoration makes the building appear just like a clean and white block of concrete. Step inside and everything changes. The internal decoration of the lobby, the corridors and the rooms is dominated by local materials such as rough silk, rough stone and polished wood, enhanced by an abundant complement of Thai sculpture and artifacts. The high quality of the fixtures is apparent down to the smallest details. This results in an atmosphere of supreme refinement and peace. The generous size of the rooms does not hurt, neither does their modern equipment including equally generous bathrooms. Service is efficient and low-key, with the soft and kind touch of Thai hospitality.

The dining options are superior, including the plush buffet breakfast, the Thai and Italian restaurant, all offering excellent food; you can't go wrong with any of them.

Don't be fooled by the resort feel of the place: the Sukhothai operates primarily as a business hotel. I know some road warriors who consider it too soothing for business - almost sedate. Others enjoy it as an oasis of calm in the urban chaos that is Bangkok. Pick your side.

Old school charm in the midst of a busy city. The Sukhothai is an oasis in Bangkok with amazing staff, facilities and food. Great location (amongst all the top hotels) and a fantastic spa to compliment everything else.
I would definitely stay here on my next visit, and recommend it for business or pleasure.

Room Tip: Pool view rooms - pay the extra they are worth it

The Sukothai is amazing. The service is excellent. The rooms are kept clean, the pool is huge and the restaurants keep you well fed. I loved everything about my stay. We stayed during the flooding, this area was not affected.

The breakfast, get what is included with the room. You have choices of everything, including Pad Thai. The chocolate buffet with champagne is wonderful.

The only bad thing to happen is the hotel messed up on our bill. It had mysterious charges. They also weren't clear what was included with the American Express deal from the mini bar. The front desk staff said we had options to everything in the bar however, we began to look at the prices and realized it was too good to be true.

The hotel took care of it and cleared things up. It took a bit of a fight.

The other restaurants are the tops. Very expensive compared to the rest of Thai food but superior in service and quality.

The location is great. You can walk to many things, including the train. Cabs are pretty cheap. Jan-March is low season.

Room Tip: Get your room with breakfast.

This has to be the best hotel i have ever stayed in. We had such a wonderful time. The staff are so friendly. The ambience is great. The pool is a real treat. Table service with free cold water and ice. The rooms are very modern with top class decor. I will definitely be back!

This is our favorite hotel anywhere. Staying here at least obce every year. Bangkok is a great city but the hustle an dbusle can be tiring and the Sukhothai is luxurious haven. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the service is firendly without be intrusive. They have two of the best restaurants in the Celedon and La Scala, some of the best Thai and Italian food anywhere. The staff go ot of their way to ensure your every need is catered for and I will always go back.

Room Tip: The executive rooms are worth every penny

It was our second stay at the Sukhothai in Bangkok. The hotel is in the business district amid noisy cars. However, our room faced the lovely inner courtyard which included lily ponds filled with fish, so it was very quiet. The hotel is conveniently located, easily accessible to markets and sites (the Jim Thompson shop is literally 5 minutes away by taxi). There are also some wonderful shops within, including Almeta. There is a large pool to cool off after a day of site-seeing.
