“Almost as good as its aura”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 January 2014

My apologies for another long review, but the Sukhothai is one of my favorite hotels, and I want to put my comments into context. The hotel opened in the mid-90s, and I had my first stay soon after. Back then, the established luxury piles on the river attracted most of the hospitality accolades, and the Sukhothai seemed a world apart. Instead of "colonial" tropical decor or contemporary Thai kitsch, the Sukhothai's subtle references to classical Thai architectural themes made it a forerunner of the design hotel boom. Although well-located near the heart of the Silom/Sathorn business and entertainment district, the hotel's distinctive courtyard design and ample green space make it feel like an urban oasis. The hotel is not part of a large international chain, and does not cater to conventions and tour groups. In its first years, the Sukhothai was embraced by people in the creative fields, gays, independent businesspeople, and other "early adapters".

Like many places that inspire a cult following, the Sukhothai has probably been eliciting mutterings of "it's not what it used to be" since the second week it was open. Long gone are the days when you were automatically upgraded to a suite every fifth stay, or the Sunday jazz brunch was affordable enough to attract the Silom nightlife crowd recovering from the previous night's festivities. As word got out about the Sukhothai's distinctive style, hushed charm, and attentive service, the hotel started to attract corporate types, families, and even some of the tourists who used to prefer the riverfront icons. Instead of an under-the-radar haunt, the Sukhothai is now firmly established as one of Bangkok's most appealing places to stay.

The hotel still earns high marks on all the basics: The design offers an excellent sense of place, and is immediately calming. Most rooms overlook a lush inner courtyard of tropical plantings and fish ponds. The rooms themselves are a bit on the small side, but beautifully designed in dark tropical woods and Thai fabrics. The public areas are dignified and sumptuous, with the grand dining room at the Colonnade hosting a truly excellent breakfast buffet. The in-house Thai and Italian restaurants are also good, and the bar has an appealing outdoor seating area. In addition, there's a gym, a large outdoor pool, and an in-house spa.

While familiar faces on the staff have slowly changed over the years, the hotel offers smooth, reliable service. Because the hotel has set such a high standard in the past, however, minor shortcomings can be especially noticeable. On my last stay, during the busy holiday period, the staff sometimes seemed overwhelmed and out of sorts. Room service trays languished in the hall for hours, and I was surprised to find cobwebs in the bathroom. The lobby entrance can also be a bit chaotic, as in contrast to years past there doesn't seem to be anyone in charge of sorting out taxi and car-service requests. That said, the concierge team has always been top-notch, and the staff in the lobby and the Colonnade are fantastic. Even if you're not staying at the hotel, if you have a sweet tooth, make a reservation for the chocolate buffet on weekend afternoons. The pastry chef, who's been at the hotel for years, really cares about what he's doing, and it shows.

The best hotels combine all the expected comforts and services with an indelible reflection of their location. For me, the Sukhothai embodies Bangkok. Even if it doesn't always quite reach its potential, the Sukhothai still manages to inspire an almost fanatical devotion among loyal guests who want the ideal base for exploring one of the world's great cities.

My boyfriend and I recently visited Bangkok and booked 4 nights at the Sukhothai.

From the moment we got off the plan and got our luggage the experience began. We had booked a hotel car to pick us up. The sedan was very clean, the driver was friendly and there was cold water and snacks provided.

As soon as we arrived to the hotel which was around 10pm, they had our information ready, knew our names and we were taken up to our room within 15-20 minutes. Location isn't bad. Probably a 15 min walk to the subway trains which are SO easy to navigate and use. Don't always waste money with cabs. They try and cheat you at every moment. If you do use cabs, demand they use the meter at all times.

I have provided pictures. We stayed in the Superior Room and couldn't have been happier. The room was spacious, the bed very comfortable and the bathroom was huge! The toilet was a TOTO and could do everything for you but clean you dishes. We didn't use the bathtub (you never know how clean they really are) but it was huge. The shower was lovely, good water pressure, hot water very fast and the rainfall shower head was heaven. Can you tell I'm a happy customer?

I think one thing that really stood out to us was when we would eat breakfast in the morning. It's not cheap (prob comes to about $50 USD per person) but it's a huge buffet and has everything. I'm a mid-western guy and my boyfriend is Asian. They had eggs and bacon for me and they had congee and dim sum for him. HA. The waiters were so friendly and memorized our names and were extremely attentive. 5 star!

Another thing that stood out was the concierge. We had so many questions about where to start our travels in the city, good places to eat, etc and they patiently worked with us to answer each and every question. Even calling museums and restaurants to get answers to questions they didn't know. I feel horrible I don't remember their names but every single one of them were great.

The pool and gym are lovely. The gym has well kept equipment. Doesn't look worn and is extremely clean. Cold water bottles and towels are available. The pool is large and as soon as we found a lounge chair, there was someone there putting a towel down for us, brought us water and asking if we needed anything. We ordered a sandwich and it came within 10 minutes.

Overall we absolutely loved our experience. Please keep in mind, this is a resort and 5 star. Nothing is for free people so be ready to PAY. Save up your money or come with the understanding that you everything you want done and touch at the hotel will cost you. We were ok with that and pampered ourselves.

On a separate note, yes we are gay. At no point did we feel uncomfortable. There was an even mix of families (I wouldn't recommend kids stay here) and straight and gay couples. The staff just wants you to have a pleasant time and enjoy yourselves.

Just returned from our second visit to Bangkok (a week each time); the Sukhothai continues to deliver on all fronts:

* Depending on what you want from your visit, the hotel's location could be a pro or con. We chose it because we wanted a relatively central location but outside the riverfront tourist ghetto. That's what you'll get. it's walking distance to Lumpini Park, Convent Street, several top hotels/restaurants, and the MRT (and a longer walk to the BTS), and a 10-minute cab ride to the Central Pier in one direction and the Sukhumvit corridor in the other. So from that perspective, it could be said to be centrally/perfectly located between and among all those sites. That said, it's not on the river or walking distance to the premier shopping malls, if those are your top priorities.

* The property is beautiful, impeccably maintained, quiet, verdant.

* The rooms are state of the art: very well designed and appointed, quiet, secure, and in perfect condition. Especially great beds and linens.

* The staff are best in the business; the concierges are especially helpful.

* One of the hotel restaurants, Celadon, is among the best high-end Thai in the city.

* The pool is lovely, though a rare note of criticism here: it isn't actually my favorite in the city: it's a bit crowded and close, and we had a hard time finding space away from smokers. (It would be great to have a non-smoking section.)

One final note - and a hesitation, because this is an issue throughout Bangkok, and it's not the hotel's fault or responsibility: we noticed more than once, on both our visits, that there is a garbage problem along Sathorn Road. Vendors leave their bags of rubbish on the sidewalk at the end of the day, so overnight, the trash bags attract rats. This can be a real bummer as you're walking home after an evening out - picking your way among the trash bags and their accompanying wildlife. Yuck. Again: not the hotel's fault or responsibility, but maybe Sukhothai management, along with that of the Shangri-La and Metropolitan (all located along the same stretch of Sathorn) can lean on either the city or the vendors to clean up their act, in the interest of their collective guests.

Overall, we give the Sukhothai a 9 out of 10 rating and look forward to returning someday soon.

Room Tip: The hotel is set back from the main road so all rooms will be removed from traffic noise. Those ove...

Sukhothai Bangkok

This was our first visit to the Sukhothai hotel in Bangkok. We normally stay on the river

but our agent decided to put is in the Sukhothai. First impression was very good with

a lovely lobby and friendly receptionist. The hotel is located in a very busy section of

Bangkok but is surprisingly quiet.

The room was a bit small and dark for my taste. There was lots of wood in the room

which contributed to the dark feeling but it was very well done. There were a lot of

scratches on the floors and cupboards, and the room definitely needs some refinishing

and is showing age.

The pool is quite far from the rooms but is peaceful well designed. The Spa was very

nice and my therapists gave me a great Thai massage.

For guests in Bangkok on business I would recommend this hotel, but if you are on

vacation it is not really the best choice. Traffic during rush hour was terrible. We sat in

the cab for almost 30 minutes to go about 200 meters!

Very typical and charmfull place, perfectly located near the river (to access the temples) and close to Siam center (for shopping) at a completely affordable price.
One of the most awesome breakfast we ever experienced.
Modern but warm and cosy design in the room.

I stayed in Sukhothai several times, and always impressed with the quality of service.
I really feel in Bangkok, with the high level of Thai kindness showed there. The place is huge, the rooms very well kept and very big. Restaurants are nice, breakfast is wonderful, the Thimian shop offers very nice drinks, cakes, drinks and quality shopping. The pool is very relaxing and big to be in such a big city, and in the center of the town.
Luxery and kindness at his best.
