“Amazing hotel...but, is it still worth it?”
Reviewed 30 March 2014

Great hotel, great pool, gym, fantastic spa and good location. One of the best buffet breakfasts in the World but as a regular guest I can’t help think standards are slipping.

Don’t get me wrong – still luxury 5 star but this hotel regularly commands rates of 7,000 – 12,000 THB per night rather than the 3,000-5000 enjoyed at most other regular 5 star hotels in Bangkok.

The service in the past is impeccable, as you’d expect for the rates paid but over 2 or 3 more recent visits it just doesn’t seem as good. A few instances that occurred during my most recent stay..

- Lack of bell and door staff on arrival
- No offer of assistance with luggage
- Some check in confusion
- Incomplete toiletries in room
- No bottled water in room on arrival
- Missed turn down service
- Broken shower
- A half eaten jam pot being delivered with breakfast
- Staff knocking on door despite ‘do not disturb’ being posted
- Staff calling my room incorrectly when trying to reach another guest

Staff are lovely, friendly and very welcoming and I get the impression its the management which might have changed, as many of the staff seem more stressed than they used to. They seem less happy.

The wonderful staff did rectify some of the issues when brought to their attention, and gave me a free airport transfer – but its not about the money. At this standard of hotel these kind of things just shouldn't happen.

Despite these issues this hotel is excellent – and is what you’d expect of a 5 star hotel – but it is fast losing the ‘extra’ service that helps it command such high rates.

If they want to keep their high rates then they need to deliver exceptional service above and beyond what you’d get at the MANY other 5 star hotels in the City – if they don’t, then you might as well choose somewhere else at half the price like the Banyan Tree or Sofitel which are both very close by.

Finally, a word about the spa – it is excellent. My treatments with Wut were amazing and all the spa staff are 1st class. Some of the best treatments I’ve experienced anywhere in the world. Highly recommended.

Great hotel .....staff were great - friendly and spoke good English, gave good advice when asked. Room was excellent .... Giant separate bathroom and wardrobe area. Tried the on site thai restaurant which was excellent ! Spa packages also provide good variety and choice. Hotel is within a 10min walk to the MRT subway Lumpini station. I will return to the Sukhothai.

I love this hotel. It is the only place I like to stay when I come to BKK. It is an oasis of calm and privacy in the middle of the city. It is slightly like stepping back in time; it is a little bit old fashioned but in a very classic way. The rooms are enormous. The hotel is not a high rise, but is spread out over a few buildings with ponds and gardens in between. the breakfast is fantastic and provides a great start to the day. The airport transfers are a great indulgence.

Thank you very much for your precious review on Trip Advisor.

We are delighted to learn that you choose to stay only with us every time you visit Bangkok. The cozy yet elegant style of the hotel with low rise buildings in the heart of the city offers you an elegant and unique experience which you cannot find anywhere else in Bangkok.

We are looking forward to your returning to The Sukhothai Bangkok in the near future.

The Sukhothai is synonymous of unparalleled service and incredible elegance for a long time ago and this is why we have stayed in this beautiful hotel several times already even if the competition for luxury hotels in Bangkok is pretty hard and there is always a new hotel you maybe want to try...
However, during our recent stay in Bangkok, we had decided not to try anything new but just be confident again with a old lady and we really do not regret our choice.

To our point of view, The Sukhothai is maybe one of the very best urban escape in the world and it's a bit like an oasis in the hustle and bustle of the Thai capital. Right after you enter into this magnificent property, you will feel apart and absolutely wonderfully pampered because The Sukhothai is not only a fantastic masterpiece of design and architecture but it's undoubtedly one of the hotels where you will be fully pampered by a team of professional who have only one objective: making you feel very special. The staff has been really well trained to provide the highest standard of service to discerned guests and it's one of the most fabulous thing ever.

To come back on the design, we are always impressed by such a marvelous design and this sensational sense of space. Choose an Executive Suite which is more than 70sq. meters and will offer you the feeling to be at home far from home. Beautiful materials, smooth silk, very elegant and relaxing scheme of colors and very sexy huge bathroom with an excellent dressing area.
The rooms at The Sukhothai are probably the best we saw in a city and after a tiring walk or a busy shopping in Bangkok, you will just be so happy to come back in your little "home".

This hotel has also the advantage to offer a breathtaking F&B including a sublime Thai restaurant named Celadon and maybe the most delicious italian restaurant named La Scala where you will have a pizza to die for... And don't miss the buffet breakfast offering a huge range of high quality dishes for the nicest wake up ever.

Our new stay has been so nice we have decided to return to Bangkok after our holidays in the islands to spend an extra night in this beautiful place, just to enjoy again the very special atmosphere...

Room Tip: An Executive suite

I really wanted to try this hotel for a long time but never got the chance because we usually want to stay in a skyscraper in BKK or at the riverside. However since we stayed only one night in BKK when we arrived to Thailand, we decided to give it a chance. I found a really good rate in the web for a executive suite (without breakfast though).

The room was spacious and classy. It wasn’t my kind of “interior design” since it is quite Thai but it was beautiful anyhow. The wooden parts (doors e.g.) started to be quite old but it didn’t bother me much. The bathroom was huge with separate tub and shower and came with good amenities (toothbrushes, loofa, body milk etc.). The only thing that would have made the room even better, would have been a door/wall between the bedroom and living area.

We bought the breakfast which was quite pricey (around 1000 bahts if I remember correctly) but that’s a standard in all real 5* hotels in BKK. No complaints about the breakfast. Very good quality and sophisticated atmosphere. We would have loved to try the Thai restaurant in the hotel since it was recommended but we arrived so late that we just used the room service and ordered green curry, phad thai and mango and sticky rice to the room. The food was delicious, it was presented nicely and was reasonably priced.

Since we stayed only 1 night, we didn’t have a chance to enjoy many of the amenities but we managed to try the swimming pool. Pool area had the same sophisticated feel as the breakfast room. Pool service was courteous and efficient. The hotel gardens make it a nice escape from the hectic life in BKK.

Service in the hotel was really good. The old kind of Thai hospitality (not pretentious but they were there every time you needed them without making a fuss about it). We had booked in advance the hotel airport service with S class Mercedes. Yes, it costs more than a regular taxi but was surprisingly good value and I definitely would be using it again. Check in happened in our suite and check out took only a minute.

We traveled as a family with a toddler. This is not a family hotel and I wouldn’t come here if I had five screaming kids but we never felt like our toddler was a problem (luckily he behaved quite nicely). If I was on a business trip or spending quality time with my other half, I could definitely come back to Sukhothai. True 5 star hotel with excellent Thai service. Well done!

My friends were staying there and invited me over. They room were nice, and the hotel seemed very nice a place I would consider for my next stay. The pool is long enough to have a good swim in and the service is very good, also had dinner and I enjoyed a well cooked green curry. Lovely place to chill for a day or for a few hours.

Excellent hotel; the staff could not do enough to look after us. The food in the hotel is great. The hotel facilities are really good, very clean, very comfortable. The hotel is located in the smarter end of town and felt very safe. Great for a business trip or a holiday.
