If you're looking for a high end property in Bangkok, try the Sukhothai. We've stayed there three times in the last ten years and had a great expierence each time. Our rooms were always in the building by the pool and were always comfortable and quiet.
The staff are amazing and the Sunday brunch is fantastic.
The pool area is probably one of the best in Bangkok, good size pool with plenty of lounge area, a decent little poolside restaurant, and a tennis court too.
The Sukhothai is not the Oriental but then again, you can wear shorts and not worry about other guests sticking their noses up in the air at you.More
