“Beautiful hotel, good location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 4 May 2011

Stayed with spouse and 2 kids aged 5 and 7. Stayed in the Horizon Club room which was very spacious with added Horizon Club lounge benefits.
Breakfast at Next2 was wonderful - huge variety to suit many different tastes.
The Salathip Thai restaurant on the hotel premises had really good food. Service was slightly slow - considering the layout of the restaurant, but that did not bother us. The restaurant had Thai dancers entertaining the guests during dinner which gave us a real Thai feel.

The hotel had the most wonderful staff - I suppose it is a Thai tradition - greeting with so much respect and always with a smile...
Staff are more than willing to help.
Taxi's or Tuk-tuks are readily available from the hotel - no waiting time required.
There is an MRT station just next to the Krunthep Wing of the hotel. A mere 5 minutes walk.
Hotel is also well located on the Chao Phraya river. We took a long-tail boat from the hotel which was a wonderful experience.

The Chi Spa at the hotel was the best...great ambience...From the welcome through to the end of the treatment you are treated like royalty. Although pricey as compared to the huge number of "normal" Spa's all over the City, this one is well-worth it!!

Had the pleasure of staying at the shangri-La, Bangkok, and location was perfect..in town but on a quick pleasant street and right on the river.

We had a suite that was very spacious and also opted for club lounge access both
of which made the stay very comfortable.

The hotel is on the busy river..and has great views. Late evenings on the hotel
waterfront were magical, great romantic lighting, nice lounge furniture, soft music, and a soft breeze added to the ambiance. The next morning the restaurant, which has indoor and outdoor seating...greeted us with the mother of all buffet breakfasts.

The gym and spa are brand new and ultra- luxe and are in the newer wing of the hotel.
I suggest staying in the older wing and not paying up for the newer wing.

Just meters outside the hotel are the best head and foot massage shops and for 6
dollars an hour -- it is the best and most relaxing deal in town. Renting a car
with driver is also very reasonable at 4 dollars an hour and I highly recommend
doing that to get around for sightseeing around BKK or for day trips out. Lee,
our English fluent driver took us around for a couple of days and we
experienced BKK and surrounds in great comfort. He proved to be not only a good
driver but an excellent and gracious tour guide and Lee"s number is
+66847353835

Our package supposedly included free transfers but on departure were told by SL
staff that it meant only pick up and not return...a last minute inconvenience
and given how much the stay had cost...they should have comped it. This was the
only Disappointment ...Other than that..a nice hotel and highly recommend:)

I agree wholeheartedly with Suitdude's review on 1 May below. We booked executive suites in the Shangri la wing and they were stunning. The suites automatically give you access to the horizon club lounge on the 24th floor, and we had free cocktails and canapes there every evening. The canapes were incredible. The pool area is also amazing. We finished every day with a couple of hours by the pool. Easy access to all of Bangkok via skytrain. Lovely being near the river (highly recommend a canal cruise on a longboat). We ate at all the hotel restauraunts and highly recommend Angelini's. The Shang Palace was not to my taste but is certainly a lovely restauarant. The breakfast buffet is one of the best I have experienced.

The good: facilities are very nice and new, good pool area, very nice spa, good restaurant choices, is next to the BTS station, staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, is on the river so you have easy access to river transportation, is very close to The Peninsula and Mandarin Oriental hotels if you are looking for a change of scenery for a few hours, free wireless internet in lobby and rooms The OK: wireless internet is slow. The bad: nothing.

Stayed at Shangri-la Bangkok for 4 nights over the Easter long weekend (April 22-26). Booked the airport transfer, which was a BMW 7-series. Met by a Shangri-la airport representative and escorted to the car, which arrived within 10 minutes. Although the hotel is situated in a rather dimly-lit street lined with massage shops and miscellaneous retailers, the arrival was impressive, with a long, wide curving driveway lined with bougainvillea, overhung with crystal chandeliers (this is the exterior!). A Guest Relations officer escorted me straight to my Executive Riverview Suite where registration formalities were completed. The suite was excellent, value, costing THB 9,000 per night - only a small premium over an Executive Balcony Room, yet with 80% more space. My suite was one of only 5 in the entire hotel boasting twin outdoor terraces facing the Chao Praya River, equipped with chairs and recliners. Enjoying the morning sun and evening breezes became a delightful routine. The suite was tastefully furnished with a balance of Thai and contemporary styles, with the usual in-room technology, the living room comprising a glass-topped dining table and 2 chairs facing a 2 seater couch and armchair. Nice quiet airconditioning, which is a must!

The bedroom was accessed from a short corridor, and I liked the distinct separation between living and sleeping areas. Bed was the usual superb Shangri-la standard, making for blissful sleep. Bathroom also up to usual high Shangri-la luxurious standards, marble everywhere, spotless and with L'Occitane toiletries.

The breakfast buffet at Next 2 cafe was so extravagant that I rarely had to eat lunch, with an excellent selection of Western and Asian dishes, all of which were hot and tasty, with attentive and friendly staff. Speaking of service, the staff were excellent throughout, especially at the Horizon Club lounge on the 24th floor, which is definitely worth the extra, if not for the panoramic views of city and river, then for the food and beverage selections. Some evenings, I couldn't eat dinner after grazing on the "happy hour" canapes and hors d'oeuvres.

The Shangri-la wing, where the majority of the rooms/suites are situated, has undergone a recent refurbishment, and certainly shows it. However, I do not recommend the adjoining Krungthep wing, which is sorely in need for an update. Don't bother paying extra for that.

Walking to the BTS Sky Train (Saphan Taksin) is a 5 minute affair along a long airconditoned passageway, through the public areas and the aforementioned Krungthep Wing.

I regret that I didn't have opportunity to try the other restaurants, as I had been recommended both Angelini (Italian) and Shang Palace (Cantonese) by local friends.

Overall, an excellent stay, and I cannot highly recommend this hotel. Being a hotelier myself, I am especially critical of my competitors, but the Shangri-la Bangkok impressed me in all facets, although the gym looked a little tired and could do with a refurb. I look forward to returning later this year.

Stayed for three nights at this hotel. The pool was lovely and the location on the river spot on. Its right by the Sky train stop or you can get the river boat up to the palace. We stayed in a river view balcony room which came with breakfast (which was fantastic).

We stayed in the Shangri La Bangkok on the first 4 nights of our Honeymoon before flying on to Samui. We stayed in the Krungthep wing that offers many fantastic services over that of the Shangri la wing. The afternoon tea is superb and the sundowner cocktails are excellent too. The hotel is located right beside a skytrain stop and the main river taxi dock making everything in Bangkok accessible. Couldn't recommend it any more highly!
