“Great hotel, perfect location”
Reviewed 14 June 2011

This was our third stay at the Shangri-La Bangkok. This chain never disappoints. The hotel has a great location, adjacent to both the Sky Train and the river boat transport. As traffic in Bangkok is difficult at best, these two modes of transportation are most important. The original hotel wing has been completely remodeled as noted by other reviewers, but we have not stayed there since our first visit in 2001. I recommend the Krungthep Wing for several reasons. First the rooms are larger and have balconies overlooking the river. Ask for a high floor as far away from the bridge as possible as traffic can be noisy. The Krungthep wing has its own check-in/out facility which is much quieter and efficient than the older wing. Be sure to tell your taxi driver to take you to the Krungthep wing entry as it is a distance from the main wing arrival area. Krungthepis an all Club level wing, providing breakfast, afternoon tea, and evening cocktails and hors d'ouevres. The breakfast area is lovely and has a fairly wide variety on the buffet, all good quality , and a menu of cooked to order items. You can, of course, opt to take breakfast in the other wing with a wider variety and outdoor dining, but it tends to be very busy and the services is, as a result, not quite as good. Afternoon tea is really nice, lots of little tea sandwiches and sweets. Evening refreshments were high quality and more varied than the usual Club offerings. Importantly, Krungthep has its own pool just for residents of that wing. It is much quieter, as families seem to opt for the other wing. Start the pool man off with a nice tip and he will bring ice water and soft drinks to you all day. He will also bring afternoon tea to you by the pool.

For a lovely lunch or dinner try the Blue Elephant Restaurant, right next to the Sky Train
Surasak station. You will see it from the train. It is in a lovely old house, very elegant setting. Get the tasting lunch menu. It is also a cooking school.

We had booked an all-in-one travel and hotel deal out of Manila for a short visit to Bangkok. The river view was a sweet touch to the suite-like king sized room. Everything in the hotel spoke of luxury and the service was top notch. Of course, the price tag matched the quality, even with the substantial discount we received.

The shangri la is right by the river, so it's easy to catch a fantail up to the palace or to Wat Po. The hotel also arraned a car tour for us out to the Damnoen (sp?) market. We got an early start and beat a lot of the touristic rush.

The in-house spa services are also a bit on the expensive side, but a very pleasant setting that's worth it if you want a little pampering.

Room Tip: There seem to be more smoking than non-smoke rooms

Standard room on third floor was spacious and modern. All aspects of room were immaculately clean. Bathroom had separate tub and California type shower and was quite large. Staff tries to help with every request. Exotic fruit everyday was quite a surprise. Only drawbacks were that there are no cooking facilities or microwave if you want to make something yourself and breakfast is not included in price of room as is more common in other hotels in Thailand. If I had to be in Bangkok again would definitely try to stay here. It is not inexpensive but you do get value for the cost

Room Tip: Try to get room with river view

The Shangri-La has the best position of the River Hotels in Bangkok. Situated on the banks of the sleepless Chaopraya river and a few minutes from the skrytrain. The staff are excellent and the welcome is always heartwarming. Rooms well appointed, lounges pleasant and restaurants cater to every taste. Nice gymn and sauna and steamroom. The hotel offers a business centre and the club floor is of the best in Bangkok. It is always a pleasure to return to the hotel, and it never disappoints.

My husband and I stayed here with two other couples after touring Viet Nam and Cambodia. This has to be one of the most polished hotels for service that we have stayed in. As you exit the elevator, you are greeted by beautifully dresssed staff and offered directions if needed. The buffet on the first floor seems to have no end in sight with anything you could possibly desire including an entire area devoted to different chocolate confections. The room was modern and afternoon tea was served in your room. Can't imagine a more magnificent place to stay.

although staying at the Krungthep Wing for years we tried out the Main Wing and whow what a surprise, even being for them a first timer, everybody but really everybody greated us with a great smile and an unbeatable friendliness. Mr. Brunner and his predecessor must have done an excellent job in training that staff!
The most friendlies satff in Sout East Asia, if you want to feel welcomed, go and see the Shangri La BKK

Stayed in a Horizon Club Room. Well worth the extra, relaxing lounge with fab views of the river.Just be careful when going into the lounge dress is quite formal, no beach shorts. Staff helpful and welcoming. Bedroom was spacious and modern, small table and chairs at the window provided views you could watch all day! The swimming pool provided a welcome restbite at the end of the day
