“Would not stay there again.”
Reviewed 7 November 2011

After staying three nights at that Mandarin hotel we decided to stay one night at the Shangri-La Hotel, what a mistake we thought the service was going to be comparable to the Mondarin but not a chance, hey concierge is not knowledgeable about the area and he sent us to a
tourist trap restaurant, never go to the Naj restaurant if the concierge suggests it. They are way better options to stay in Bangkok where you will getthe real Thai customer service.

Stayed here many times over the years but this was the first visit since the refurbishment. They have done a great job. Everything now looks fresh and with the great Shangri La service, you could want for little more. Had Dinner in the Next 2 restaurant on our first night. The restaurant serves the most amazing international buffet. We were there at the height of the concerns over flooding and the hotel was fully prepared with contingency plans in place and excellent communications. Their focus was always guest safety and comfort. The breakfast buffet is an experience and a great way to start your day. Horizon Lounge looks fantastic with equally fantastic staff and facilities.

Room Tip: River view rooms worth the extra. Horizon Club floor also great for added value

Writing this November 7th during the flood crisis. The hotel is operating normally with all amenities available. No problem traveling from the airport to the hotel. The hotel cars now have complimentary wireless internet. The river is high but well within its banks. The area around the hotel is dry and shops are open. Precautionary sandbags are everywhere. Some shops require you to climb over the sandbags in order to enter. The BTS Sky Train is operating normally. I used the Sky Train to go shopping at Siam and Central World with no difficulties.

I had been staying away from this hotel because of what seemed to be a never ending series of disruptive renovation projects. Those projects now appear complete. The rooms are better than ever. The staff are systematically professional with English skills better than most local hotels.

I recommend the balcony rooms in the Shangri-La wing. The hotel is quick to offer Krungthep wing rooms if the balcony rooms are booked. The Krungthep wing is closer to the bridge and I find the traffic noise bothersome. I stay here on business which causes me to favor the Shangri-La wing in general.

It is not clear that the risk of flooding has passed in this part of Bangkok. Best to call the hotel for advice prior to traveling.

From checkin to room service to the pool, WOW! Not sure if the hotel was so calm due to the flooding, but service was impeccable.

We opted for a more expensive two room suite on one of the Horizon floors and so glad we did. With the time diff from LA our 2.5 year old and I played in one room and my wife slept soundly in the other. Bathroom larger than our bedroom at home. Lots of free bottled water.

Everything was top notch. Room service arrived quickly, even at 330am.

Also you can easily walk to the super clean super easy to navigate subway.

Finally ask for your rates in writing. What we paid was actually less than what we were quoted. Also if you need a taxi to the airport ask the staff to call Mr Jooky. At 700 Baht it's about one fourth of what the hotel would charge for transport.

We stayed one night in October on our way to the Islands family of 4.
we stayed in Executive suite – the room was absolutely superb! Everything you can imagine of and more.
The bathroom was large, very clean, the enmities was real "Lacon'taine de France" products.
The bedroom was extremely large and the bed was super comfy.
Fresh fruit was provided and replaced at all time and the nicest gesture was the nice treat they send to the kids ( chocolate white elephant in an amazing box)
We took the dinner river cruise and it was delicious and very nice/romantic though a bit expensive.
The executive lounge is fantastic they serve pre diner cocktails and canapés – with the view of Bangkok.
Breakfast was wonderful, I can clearly say it was the best Breakfast selection I saw in any hotel. So rich so colorful.
I think to summarize this wonderful experience I will quote my kids quote "I want to the Shangri-La".

Room Tip: if you are a family the executive suite is a good and comfortable solution.

This is a handy location for a small meeting for business travellers to gather to from around the world: the hotel has good meeting facilities, but also comfortable rooms and a nice pool and fitness centre for relaxing and work-out. The breakfast buffet is abundant, and fresh fruit are delivered to the room, which is a nice little touch. Staff is friendly and the hotel is clean - all in all: no complaints, if the hotel lacking personality is not one.

There is not much in the neighborhood aside from a small market and a few (good) massage places, but it is easy to get around from this hotel. Also, the hotel can help to arrange for a dinner cruise along the river, which is recommended to get at least a glimpse of Bangkok's wonderful sights if the schedule doesn't allow for a thorough sightseeing.

I've stayed in Shangri-La hotels in other cities, so i arrived here with very high expectations.
Yes, it's a grand-looking 5-star hotel with all of the services and amenities you'd expect.

I wasn't blown away with the decor, which looked a bit dated (or just not to my taste). The rooms are fine. Big enough, luxurious enough, but again lacking character. Felt like i could be anywhere in the world.
Someone else also mentioned this in a review - the staff are well-trained and smile all the time, but finding info, getting bags to the room, room service and suchlike were all a bit on the slow side. And my towel was a bit old looking/feeling (a minor gripe)

Don't get me wrong - this is quite a lovely hotel. But i give it 2 stars because it didn't meet my expectations. If i splash out and pay so much money for a hotel, I've kinda gotten used to having my expectations exceeded. There are much better 5 star hotels in Bangkok for the same price.
