My wife and I loved this hotel. We’ve stayed in numerous hotels in Bangkok and this is one of the best. The hotel is very luxurious, the building itself is grand and opulent, the service is faultless and the location ideal. We really liked the river setting and the pool area is especially good for a city-centre hotel. Can’t really fault it and would definitely recommend upgrading to a Club room if you can.

Location
This was the first time I’ve stayed by the river in Bangkok, normally we choose one of the hotels on Silom Road itself so I was a little apprehensive about not knowing the area. I need not have worried! The river setting is just superb – adding a totally different experience to our time in Bangkok. The Skytrain station is just a few minutes walk away (you actually walk through the conference area and the Krongthep Wing so barely even step outside) which connects you with Sala Daeng (Silom/Patpong) in just a few minutes and just a few more minutes to the malls on Rama I (MBK, CentralWorld etc). You could probably walk to Patpong in about 25 minutes if you wanted to. The hotel is off the main road so the streets outside are actually fairly quiet which is nice, there is also a sprinkling of bars, restaurants and cheap massage places right outside the hotel as well as a local market round the corner with food vendors for really cheap bites.

Staff
We had booked a Club room so were whisked straight up to the Horizon Club Lounge for check-in which was swift. We actually arrived during cocktail’s and canapés and the lounge host found us a spot to sit and rustled up a couple of drinks to enjoy while she checked us in which was much appreciated. We visited the lounge each evening for the free drinks and canapés and the service was always excellent with staff regularly coming round to offer more drink, even remembering what you were drinking which was impressive. The pool attendants provided regular top ups of iced water as well as a sunglasses cleaning service. All the staff at the hotel seemed to speak excellent English which always helps.

Facilities
We thoroughly enjoyed breakfast which was possibly one of the best spreads I’ve seen. Everything was of real quality, the juice and fruit tasted fresh and the pastries were delicious. It was also nice to be able to sit right by the river while you enjoyed your breakfast. We didn’t eat in any of the restaurants as it’s so cheap to eat out in Bangkok – although we were tempted by the all you can eat Dim Sum at the Chinese restaurant, think it was 850B which isn’t obscene. The Horizon Club Lounge felt quite cozy as there are lots of niches and nooks – the views are fabulous and pretty much panoramic. It was fascinating watching the traffic on the river and the canapés were delicious also – especially the deserts! The hotel swimming pool is a real selling point as not many city hotels enjoy such large pools and such a large, well furnished terrace. No trouble finding a lounger here! Being by the river and away from the main roads made the air a little fresher as well.

Room
I believe the hotel was fully refurbished a couple of years ago so you’d expect everything to be tip-top – and it was. We had a Club floor room which was very luxuriously furnished and felt fairly spacious. It sat at an angle which was unusual but I think this probably added to the impression of space. I loved the big hand-painted antique looking screen on the wall over the bed and there was a large seat under the window from which to enjoy the views. The bed itself was very comfortable and the shower was great, didn’t use the bath. The Club rooms look very similar to the Executive rooms as a comparison. One criticism would be the lack of complimentary laundry service – many 5* city hotels I’ve stayed at in Thailand will launder a limited number of items FOC every day for Club floor guests. As we were at the Shangri-La at the end of our trip we would have appreciated that extra service.

Room Tip: Walk through the hotel to get to the Skytrain (it's sign-posted). If you come out of the front of the hotel and turn right, there is a nice bar/restaurant about 50 metres down on the left hand side (forget the name but it's in between a tailors and a massage place - they do really good cocktails, didn't try the food but that also looked good!

Have stayed here a couple of times now, the last time being April 2011. We decided then to splash out and take an upgrade to the Krungthep Wing....wow absolutley wonderful and well worth the extra monies. You have your own butler, seperate pool and restaurant for breakfast, plus all the little extra snacks. We love this hotel as it's so central, got good eating places and you're right on the river to watch the world go by- and being in this wing you actually get an outside balcony to sit on! You have the hotel ferry to take you along to the pier a few minutes away, where you can catch the skytrain, so convenient and easy to use.Rooms are beautifully furnished and beds very comfortable, hotel highly recommended!

We stayed in the Krungthep Wing in a Deluxe Room with balcony facing the Chao Phraya River.
Location is excellent for river and Saphon Taksin Skytrain station is a 1 minute walk from the hotel. The pier at Saphon Taksin is the start point for various river boat tours, however, if you just want a trip along the river then jump on the water taxi. These are super cheap and ferry the locals up and down all day. Cost is next to nothing - the water taxi is the long boat with orange pennant flag at the front and back of the boat. From the Skytrain station you can be in Siam shopping area in about 15 minutes or Patpong Market in about 10 minutes.
The hotel is all about service. You are greeted by every member of staff you pass. The Kriungthep Wing is smaller than the main hotel and provides a separate swimming pool and lounge area for residents. The main wing swimming pool is a much nicer pool area but can get busy - that's where having the choice is good. Our pool was quiet and uncrowded and offers free soft drinks all day long. Afternoon tea and evening canapés and cocktails are complimentary to Krungthep Wing residents. Breakfast is served too, but for a bigger variety of breakfast dishes, head over to the main wing of the hotel.
Rooms are spotlessly clean, spacious and provide high end toiletries and amenities. The bed was extremely comfortable too.
A butler service is provided in the Krungthep Wing, though in some ways this might be no more than you would get from a regular housekeeping or room service.
We stayed three nights. The hotel let us check in very early and check out fairly late. The staff were always on hand to help with a smile. Yes, it's at the higher end of the cost scale; but we thought it was well worth the money - particularly when we made use of the hotel amenities and extras provided in the Krungthep Wing.

Room Tip: Krungthep Wing is good value if you take advantage of the "complimentary" services and amenities on offer.
