Certificate of Excellence

This hotel, although not cheap, is exceptional. I am amazed how they get so much right. The rooms are great, the foyer is stunning and the attention to detail is exceptional. One is us had a birthday during our stay and a cake arrived in the room on the day - a watchful and alert check in person had spotted the date on my passport. It doesn't come any better than that!
BUT by far the best feature of this hotel is the breakfast - not only is the food at the buffet complete but you get to eat it sitting on the banks of the Chao Praya river. It is worth doing this at least once in a lifetime. The river is spectacular and ever changing - I could have spent all day just sitting there but with the wonders of Bangkok calling we dragged ourselves away to the nearby (easy walk) BTS railway station to see more of this amazing city. Lucky enough to enjoy breakfast again the next morning.

Room Tip: You can easily get to this hotel using the airport train and the connecting BTS to saphan thaksin BT...

Stayed there for three nights last week. Was put into a spacious room in what is called the 'new' building. The room is large, with modern facilities and overlooked the river. It did not strike me as new. I suspect the building is old and that it has been recently taken over by the Shang. There was free wifi (although the signal was very weak in my room - often dropped) and breakfast.

There were a couple of issues however. I arrived at c. 130am at the main entrance and before I got out of the car was told I had come to the wrong building and needed to go to another. Despite asking, the taxi driver was not clear on where it was and we spent another 10 minutes trying to locate it. For tired travelers, I am sure if the Shang could take greater ownership of their guests and escort them, it would be much appreciated. The second issue was that there is obviously some fairly noisy refurbishment going on in the 'new' building. When I asked for it to be stopped it was and I was given a nice box of chocolate for my troubles, so not a complaint more an FYI if you will be in the hotel at all during the day.

There is a lovely quiet 25m pool by this building that was more or less empty with v nice staff willing to provide free soft drinks etc. V nice touch.

Stayed in a Horizon Club room for four nights during May 2012. Also stayed at Millenium Hilton in Bangkok and we preferred the Shangri-la. The welcoming pot of tea is a nice touch and the club rooms have lounge access to quiet breakfast and two hours of free cocktails, canapés and beer and wine each night with soft drinks and snacks available the rest of the day.

Really liked the pool area and the service poolside was exceptional. Pool was never that busy and no problems finding lounges etc. Gym was also a good size with a good range of equipment. We used the hotel limousine service for our airport transfer and whilst it was more expensive than a taxi it was great service, water provided and a lovely comfortable ride. Worth it I think given its a 45 minute drive from the airport to the hotel.

We ate dinner at Next 2 which was nice and reasonably priced. We had the a la carte menu rather than the buffet which was good. Salathip Thai was okay but aside from the nice setting and interesting dances I didn't think it was anything to rave about. We also ate at the Italian restaurant and had very nice food there but the wine list was a bit disappointing as was expensive and not a lot to choose from.

The hotel is in a good location being so close to a BTS station and easy to get transport from taxis etc from the magnificantly dressed staff out the front of the hotel.

I had some medication go missing and there is even a clinic at this hotel which I went to see the doctor to get replacement medication which was incredibly easy to do and also very cheap.

The hotel is huge but we didn't think that the service was lost in any way, we had great service in all parts of the hotel, particulary in the Horizon Club and poolside. We will stay here again in Bangkok.

Room Tip: Horizon Club rooms are good as they are all on the top three floors so you will get a great view as...

My Husband and I spent 3 days in the Krungthep Wing in this hotel in August 2011 and cannot recommend it highly enough, wonderful helpful staff and exceptional service.Anything we required the staff were more than glad to assist us be it where to catch the ferry to supplying an umbrella when it rained or orgainising a tuk tuk for us.When we used the pool the pool staff put the towels on the sun chairs for us what a service. Our room was on one of the higher floors with a balcony so we had a great view of the river and the passing river traffic. We certainly enjoyed the breakfast and the afternoon complimentary cocktails and canapes which were included in our room rate.
We are going back in September this year as we enjoyed our last stay so much

We stayed for 2 nights in the Krungthep Wing at the Shangri La in Bangkok and abolutely loved it! The room was beautifully decorated and we had a great view of the river from our balcony from where we enioyed evening cocktails and canapes. Our butler, Courtney, was charming and she quickly responded to any requests. The Krungthep pool is a nice size and the pool staff were always on hand to make sure we had a cold drink and fresh towels. We checked out feeling refreshed and invigorated and will definitely stay there again.

Room Tip: Krungthep rooms cost extra but are worth every penny

The shangri la is a great place to settle yourself while visiting Bangkok. It's right on the river, so try to request a room on one of the higher floors with a balcony if you can. Views are fantastic. It's also a 5-7 minute walk to one of the elevated train lines as well as the tourist and commuter boats - and on the way you'll pass by lots of food vendors and a small outdoor market. The rooms are clean, service polite but not overbearing. Overall, no complaints. We had a pleasant stay. Highly recommend.
