“Excellent hotel for children”
Reviewed 6 August 2012

From the moment we were picked up at the airport, the staff at this hotel went out of their way to make us feel at home. The rooms were great and my daughter still talks about the amazing swimming pool. We enjoyed the free boat transfers to various stops along the river. We stayed Here for two nights before travelling further inland and then returned after a week. It felt good to come back and once again, the service was excellent. We were able to check in early on both occasions and check out late on our last day in Bangkok. We received complimentary chocolates for the kids from the hotel which we thought was a nice touch. The hotel conveniently located near supermarkets, markets, a Sky Train station and a ferry taxi stop.

Room Tip: The family rooms are very spacious and the 4 of us slept quite comfortably. Horizon club rooms have...

We arrived at BKK to be met with a Shagri- la employee who took us directly to our hotel pick up which was a 7 series Bmw with lovely cold cloths and cold water.
We arrived at the hotel Krungthep wing around 10 pm to be met by 4 staff all greeting uswith typical Thai hospitality.
Our room was 965 and was very spacious with a double balcony and views of the river,The bed was enormous and for some reason the sheets seemed to stay cool all night long. The ac was perfect.
As we were travelling with our son the re was chocolate bear on arrival from the hotel chocolate shop!
The butler on arrival set up our room wireless which was perfect for our whole stay.
As part of the Krungthep wing package we had free soft drinks from the mini bar and fresh fruit every day. We had free breakfast which could either be taken at the lounge in the Krungthep wing or the next 2 cafe. The choice was better in the next 2 cafe , ranging from Chinese, Indian, western to Thai food for breakfast with fresh pastries made there and then!
In the afternoon ther was afternoon tea which was fab and thsi was then followed at 5:30 with Cocktails and canapes! It was then that we were introduced to the Tom Yam Mojito! Fab!
Each day when we came to the pull at the Krungthep wing we had free soft drinsk and coffee all day, even at the 'regular' pool there was fresh water and fruit sticks and Chai latte's offered.
The service at the Shangri- la was second to none.
The location is perfect beside the sky train and just round the corner from the Lebua state tower.
We found the concierge to be fantastic and fullof useful advice.
The massage shops outside the hotel were fabulous and we had a massage each and every evening including my 9 year old son.
My only complaint was that due to the amount of food provided by the hotel we did not get the chance to experience other Thai food!

Room Tip: 965 has a double balcony

This is my third stay at the Shangri-la hotel Bangkok and the hotel never disappoints. From the wonderful welcome to the check in and baggage delivery. Upgraded to a river view room in the Shangri-La wing was much appreciated. The rooms are nicely appointed. If you are looking for a modern style of room this is not the hotel for you. Rooms are Thai in style and very clean and comfortable. Fresh fruit daily and wonderful housekeeping staff. Any request managed without fuss. The thing I love about this Hotel is the pool and it's wonderful staff. The Next 2 cafe was also wonderful for Buffet lunch with a great selection. The outdoor bar area next to the Cafe was a great spot for a sunset cocktail. Room service was always delivered within the time advised and the food was always served with a smile, especially from Guy serving breakfast. I have viewed the rooms in the Krungthep wing( which are large and with balcony) but would prefer to stay in the Shangri-la wing which has a much nicer lobby with a better atmosphere in my opinion. I have also been in to the Peninsular and Mandarin Oriental but much preferred the Shangri-La especially the pool/ restaurants. After a wonderful 5 day stay, check out was easy and my bags were waiting for me in the taxi. The Concierge and doorman were on hand to wish me farewell. Another faultless stay. I would not consider another Hotel in Bangkok.I will be back, hopefully next year.

Apart from this hotel having a great location by the busy river, The Shangri La also has one of Bangkok's best collections of Orchids beautifully displayed in their lobby. Well worth a trip but if you also decide to take afternoon tea there, best time to go is on Sunday. Sharp at 3.30pm their Riverside Lounge is home to a Bangkok tradition 'A Tea Dance' where all the high society women of the city gather in the Sunday best to dance to a six piece orchestra accompanied by serious mainly young dancers.

After having spent a week in the Shangri-La, Bangkok last August, my partner and I anxiously waited a year so we could return to such a wonderful hotel. This summer we were equally as happy when we left however, a few minor problems occurred. Due to the experience this hotel brought to us over the past two years we overlooked them and wholeheartedly recommend this hotel for any Bangkok, business or holiday-maker.

Once again, we were warmly greeted by the concierge staff outside of the main reception. Stepping out of the taxi, I was dazzled by such immaculate attention to detail from entrance to exit. You can see Chandeliers and elaborate craftsmanship when you look in almost any direction. The hotel does it's best to capture traditional, regal Thai culture, from interior design to the sweet fragrance one can smell throughout the entire hotel.

Check-in was effortless however, we didn't realise that our travel agent booked us the city-view deluxe room, the lowest room grade in the hotel. We were offered an upgrade at a very high cost per night and were unfortunately made to feel a bit small when we declined it. Perhaps this was because we tried counting the cash we budgeted for spending money. We were escorted up to our room which looked like it probably had not been occupied in some time. The room was lovely nonetheless with a large flat-screen TV and large bathroom. However, we felt slightly concious that people were looking into our room from the block of apartments opposite. Frustrated, I contacted the manager on the from desk who said we would have to pay to upgrade. I was upset at this but we had no choice but to go for it. The manager communicated wonderfully and even jumped us up two room categories for the price of one. The upgrade cost 500 baht a night which was not that much at all. We were moved to the 15th floor into a deluxe balcony, river-view room. This room was larger and provided stunning panoramic views of the river and distant skyline.

Every day a fresh exotic Thai fruit platter is presented in your room, regardless of the room category. You also get a decent amount of toiletries and many bottles of complementary water. The mini-bar is extremely overpriced. I spent 370 baht (£8) on the cheesecake caramels because I could not resist. The housekeeping staff are absolutely amazing and unmatched anywhere in the world. They are friendly and always stop to say hello.good morning but fulfil any request within reason including a well-received turn-down service in the evening. Laundry is expensive but the concierge advised me to use a service located behind the hotel, which cost 1000 baht (£20) for two weeks worth of clothes.

On the fourth day of our seven night stay we decided to upgrade once again to get the most out of the hotel. The staff showed us all room categories before we made our decision. Firstly we viewed the river view suite which was very large and had two large windows looking out onto the river. The second was the horizon club suite with river and city view on the 25th floor. This was spectacular. The décor in the Horizon rooms are worth upgrading for, the attention to detail is unmatched. However, we chose to upgrade to the spectacular horizon club executive double because we wanted to use the horizon club lounge. You get complimentary snacks and drinks whenever you desire and the best views of Bangkok. If you stay at this hotel, pay the extra for these rooms, they are worth it.

The only problem we experienced here was when we brought out friends to the Horizon Club "Happy Hour." We actually forgot this daily event was going on and just wanted to absorb the views whilst catching up. Sitting at our table, we noticed the staff staring and conversing about us to one another. This made us feel uncomfortable to say the least. It went on for about half an hour until a member of staff came to us and asked us to leave due to our attire. I was shocked and felt embarrassed because I had come to the happy hour on two occasions previously and noticed many people wearing shorts. In fact, I remember seeing people eating there straight after leaving the gym. I was not aware of any dress code. We left and came back with trousers on and tried to enjoy the rest of the happy hour. When we left, the staff approached me and asked that I signed off a bill for my friends even though I had approached them prior to this and kindly asked that this would not happen. I did not want my friends feeling guilty about paying for anything when they were mistreated. In future, the dress code should be relaxed. We were wearing shirts and smart shorts and we noticed people wearing tracksuit bottoms who were allowed to stay.

The restaurants are very expensive and we gave each one two attempts but were not blown away. Angelinis, the Italian restaurant really needs to improve the quality of food. Salathip has wonderful ambience, but the food is nothing to write home about.

Overall, this hotel provided a spectacular experience yet again and there is no other like it. Rivals including the Mandarin Oriental and the Penisula are to pretentious and lack the quality and service provided by Shangri-La. If you want a lavish holiday, excite each of your senses with this unmatched hotel chain.

Room Tip: Go for the horizon club executive room, it makes your stay much better.

the position is great, right on the river and close to everything, however if you want 5 stars here will not come close to the sheraton or mandarin oriental which are virtually next door. The entrance is grand and the pool looks great but where it cannot compete is the jaded look of so many things such as furniture and carpets. The air conditioning leaves an unpleasant scent in areas with dampness around certain vents on the ceilings. The staff are fantastic and make no mistake you will be treated well but this absolutely falls short of 5 stars easily. It is cheaper here for many things than some of the other well known 5 star resorts and as always you only ever get what you pay for.

My husband and I visited Shangri-La at the end of April and were truly impressed by this beautiful hotel! They are a high level luxury hotel with great service for their guests. We got a Deluxe River View Room for a 4-night stay. The view was breathtaking! Room was very spacious, clean and comfortable. Lobby and various areas of the hotel also very well kept and pretty, fresh flowers everywhere and nice décor. After our long days of sightseeing, coming back to relax by the pool was amazing. They would bring us ice water and chilled mini-towels to cool of, that is service!!! In regards to breakfast, not enough compliments that I could give them. SO many variety of items to choose from, from omelets, to pancakes, various meats, cheeses, pastries and also some Asian style breakfast items such as rice with vegetables. Lots to pick from. One morning we had a 4AM tour to go see the Tiger temple, the hotel arranged breakfast boxes for us to take with us so we wouldn’t miss that meal. Nice :-) Another day we booked a cooking class but had trouble getting confirmation from them before arriving to Thailand. The concierge was so helpful in getting us in touch with the company, she had to try several times before she got a hold of them. So helpful of them! They also arranged tickets to see Muay Thai fight in town one of the nights, got us tickets pretty close to the stage! Lastly, we were very happy with the location, it was a 10 minute taxi ride into downtown and the Skytrain was a few minutes walking distance, we tried it once and it was very convenient. Overall great hotel, would definitely come back next time I visit Bangkok!

Room Tip: Get a room with river view, its a must!!
