“Perfect start to the holiday - Krungthep Wing”
Reviewed 11 September 2012

We stayed for one night at the Shangri La before heading south to the islands, what a great start. The service, as expected, was perfect and I highly recommend paying a little extra to stay in the Krungthep Wing which includes so much that it is excellent value for money, and guarantees you a river facing room with a private balcony.

I stayed in the Banyan Tree in Bangkok last year and as much as I liked it, the service at the Shangri La was on another level.

If there was one let down, it was the shower - it was disappointing to be merely dribbled on in a hotel of this calibre.

Sort the showers out and it's 100% from me!

Room Tip: Pay the extra for the Krungthep Wing

What an amazing hotel, staff that go out of their way to help, immaculate rooms with balcony overlooking the river and breakfast that included indian, chinese, huge pastry section....the list is endless. We booked the krungthep wing mainly for the balcony,so we could sit outside when our 6 year old went to bed. Also included was complimentary afternoon tea and free cocktails, wine and canapes from 5.30 until 7.30 which was agreat way to start the evening! The skytrain is just around the corner,a great way to get around without the traffic or hop on a boat from the pier next to the hotel. The pools were lovely and both overlooked the river.we received two 800 baht massage vouchers for the spa so paid about £30 for a massage, unfortunately, during mine, the masseuse had her phone switched on which beeped a few times, bit annoying! Our daughter was spoilt and on arrival received a big chocolate elephant from the hotels chocolate shop and also a jar of cookies each evening. The fluffy robes and L'occitane products in the bathroom made us feel pampered and cocktails delivered to the room at sundown..lovely!

Room Tip: Spend a bit extra and get a balcony room if you have younger children that need to go to bed earlier...

I and my wife stayed two nights on Shangri-La. And let there be no doubt. This is a VERY nice hotel. Great service, great rooms with a splendid view and excellent restaurants. Especially the buffet-dinner is out of this world! The club facilities are also very good - nice food and drinks!

The hotel is HUGE and is located right next to the river and the Skytrain - very convenient. And the hotel boat that brings you on a great dinner cruise is a must. Really fantastic - we loved it, just like a year ago.

Why then "only" give the hotel 4 stars? Because there are other hotels in Bangkok which are even better! For instance Peninsula and - especially - the neighbour hotel: The Oriental. Shangri-La lacks the final touch of class and intimacy. Maybe it is too big a hotel to offer just that little extra that could bring it into the top 3...

This however does not mean that Shangri-La is a bad choice. No way. I will really consider coming back - if I do not wish to spend a few extra USD on the neighbour ...

The Facts: Travelled for leisure. We are a couple. Stayed September for 6 nights in a Specialty Suite @ the Krungthep Wing. Used the limo service for pick-up and drop-off at the airport. Used the spa, dined at the river lounge for breakfast, tea, and happy hour, dined at Next2 restaurant for breakfast.

Pick up from the airport was smooth and effortless. Although a bit pricey for this service, to us it was totally worth it to avoid getting a taxi, dealing with luggage etc.

Greeted at the front lobby with a bang of the gong to announce our arrival. The hotel manager Frank along with Pang (front desk reception staff) were there waiting for us and we were taken to our suite to do the paper work required for checking in. Really a nice touch.

After checking in, our Butler Ammy introduced herself and set up our WiFi, did an orientation of our room and the services included with our stay, made sure we had everything we needed and then quickly and efficiently left us to relax and soak in the atmosphere.

The original room we booked was a suite with out a kitchen, but the hotel generously upgraded us to a Specialty suite which came with a powder room, full bathroom, two balconies, a living room and a separate bedroom, and a full kitchen with dining area, with full size appliances and all the cutlery, pots/pans etc. The suite was huge! Decorated in traditional style, very clean and well maintained and everything in working order.

Elevators were quick and very rarely were there other people in them when we used them.

Skytrain station is literally a 1 minute walk to the Saphan Taksin Station. Ferry access is right there also, 30 seconds further from the skytrain. Here you can catch all the ferries and also the free ferry to the new Asiatique Night shopping Mall. Tuk Tuks are waiting right outside the hotel and never had to wait for a taxi once the valet summoned them they were there in less than a minute.

Many legitimate small massage places directly around the hotel, as well as a small department store (Robinson's), various eateries, and shops. I would recommend taking the Bangkok Food Tours walking excursion "Historic Bangrak Food Tour" at the begining of your stay. This tour showed us all the good and safe places to eat and also helped us familiarize ourselves with the area directly around the hotel.

The lobby is gorgeous and quiet. The river lounge at the lobby has a spectacular view of the river and the pool.

Generally the Krungthep Wing is much more sedate and quiet when compared to the Main building.

The Spa is awesome, we did a 2 hour Ying Yang massage and it was one of the best we've ever had, and we have been to a few 5 star spas in our travels.

Breakfast at the River lounge was good but Breakfast at Next2 Cafe was much more variety and definitely worth trekking over to the Shangi La Main wing to try out.

High Tea was very nice and Happy hour Canapes and Cocktails was enough for dinner. Truly, you could go all day just eating at the hotel for free and be stuffed by the end of the day.

The best thing about this hotel, and what really made this a wonderful vacation were the staff! Everyone from the valet, the security guard, housekeeping, frontdesk, concierge, restaurant staff were amazing, always at the ready to help and always with a smile. You always felt like they were genuinely intent on making your stay as enjoyable as possible and that they were proud to represent the Shangri La Hotel and the people of Bangkok. Frank, Pang ,Ammy, Joey, Too, Tong, Green, and all the rest of the staff, you were all great and Thank you!

We will definitely be staying here again when we come back to Bangkok!

This hotel is a great place to stay in Bangkok. Skyrail is 2 minutes walk which takes you around the city, very easy to navigate. On the river with magnificent views, always something to look at. Staff went out of their way to make us feel comfortable, meals were fantastic and resonably priced. We stayed in the Krungthep wing which is a little paradise on its own, afternoon tea and evening canapes are complimentary as are all softdrinks and tea or coffee. Overall, l have nothing to say that is negative about the Shangri-La Bangkok.

Room Tip: If you dont want children around, go for the Krungthep wing, it has a private pool not for families
