“Honeymoon in the Krungthep wing”
Reviewed 26 August 2014

We stayed here for a week on our honeymoon and i cant find a single fault! They staff, rooms, food, location - all were just impeccable!

We had a deluxe room in the Krungthrep wing which had the added extras which made the stay even more enjoyable!

Highly recommended!!

There is something special at the Shangri-La Bangkok. The river location gives some splendid views and great settings for the pool and the Salathip restaurant. Service is 5 star. We ate in Next2 (buffet style) Salathip (Thai-on the river), Shang Palace (chinese) and Angelini (Italian) and all were good. The room was all we could hope for. Taxis to the city centre and sights are cheap and plentiful

Amazing hotel. The ambience, décor and service standards were very high. Staff were exceptional, very welcoming and helpful. Location wise, it is close to other amenities such as Sky train and the River and you can hop onto a boat and enjoy the historical sights and use it as transport to and from places. We have stayed in the Shangri la hotel in other countries and this is one of the best ones.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the river, lovely view day and night

Highly recommend. Beautiful suite suitable for family with two young children. Great views over the harbour. A really nice breakfast with friendly and helpful staff who feed the fish for our daughters. It was an attraction itself.
Only con would be the location, which seemed to be a couple of blocks from anything. Would definitely stay there whenever I am in Bangkok - good value and luxury.

Wonderful hotel on the river. I have stayed here several times and it has always been very nice. The location is good and easy there is access to the city center with the monorail that stops close by. Business floor is great with its own lounge serving breakfast and a happy hour in the late afternoon. Rooms a bit old in fashion but nice and clean. Lobby area bar with live music nice. Good shopping close to the hotel within walking distance. The hotel was very helpful when I wanted to arrange a cocktail reception.

Room Tip: Get a room with river view.

Stayed here in 2011, 2012 and 2014. Same impressions every time: great location, good hotel but surprisingly uninformed about the guests. E.g. every time we asked whether the buffet dinner was included in the price of the room or not it took them ages to 'check' to the point where we were already in the middle of the meal ready to pay for the buffet regardless. This year we stayed for a week in the first week of August and a second time for 3 days at the end of August (we are there now), fairly big family so we had 3 rooms with different check-out dates paid for with the same credit card. Complicated situation but you would expect a modern 5 star hotel to be able to manage. Nobody seemed to know we were the same party and we still don't know whether the credit card was correctly charged or not since we didn't receive the statement for one of the rooms. Nothing major to complain about but a frustrating general sense of fuzziness and lack of organization.

Service is OK but not as good as Mandarin Oriental (which is not the same price of course) and reception for check-in and check-out is incredibly slow even though we called reception from the room so the they could ready the bill but nothing had been done and we still had to wait quite a long time so start out early if you are on a tight schedule.

Compared to other hotels of the same class in other major cities we were surprised that they didn't seem to know we'd stayed there (3 rooms, big family!) 3 weeks before (especially since joining the Golden Circle Club...you would think it would be in the database).

Dinner at Sala Thip, the Thai restaurant was very good in 2012, we are going back tomorrow for the first time this year. Shang Palace (Cantonese) is not worth the expense although the Pekinese duck and Dim Sum were good. We haven't tried Angelini, the Italian restaurant yet. The buffet dinner is nice and varied but we definitely prefer to go out to town. Service at the buffet whether breakfast or dinner is just about OK but you can tell they don't expect to be tipped so barely smile (depending on the staff, some are very friendly). The high tea at the lounge is OK but nothing to write home about.

The pool is very nice and the service there is very good.

The Chi Spa is quite expensive and although very pleasant and sparkling clean. The actual massages if you like strong Thai massage are much better at any of the massage salons nearby at 300 baht. If you're into the soft type then the Chi spa is quite good (we had the Aroma Wellness which was pretty frustrating but I'm used to Japanese shiatsu which is quite strong).

The rooms are nice, the best thing about them is the river view. First week of August we were on the 14th floor and loved the view which is why we came back this time. Quite dissapointed to be on the 6th floor where the river view is lower (obviously): we get a very clear view this time of the swimming pool and parking but that's not why we chose a River View Deluxe room. We almost went to the Peninsula but decided to come back to Shangri-la for the view...didn't think of specifying a higher floor when making the reservation. Next time we come to Bangkok we will ask for a higher floor or go one of the other hotels on the river especially as on our first stay this month the room was slightly cheaper so it feels doubly pointless to have come back.

BUT: despite slight the above-mentioned details it's a pleasant hotel and good value considering. We don't know whether we would come back though.

Room Tip: We loved the view on the 14th floor (rooms 1426 and 1427), less the view from the 6th floor 635. The...

Bangkok offers endless opportunities of luxury 5 star hotels, cheaper in than any other city, much better service and amenities. The Shangri-La has become a bit older and tired comparing the the variety of new, beautiful, stylish, hotels you can find here. The pool is so great. The location (river front) has an amazing view, and the metro line is close, but it is not so close to the attractions and interesting areas.
The good thing was that we listened to a friend's advice and booked a room on the horizon floor. Its a beautiful room, and gives you an access to one of the best club lounges I'v ever been to!
