“Impersonal, not a place to experience Thai hospitality”
Reviewed 9 January 2009

I can't complain about the cleanliness or the comfort- these were acceptable, but given the price paid, this was a basic expectation. Overall, the SL was lacking in basic services (free airport pick-up, welcoming token etc.) and personal attention, which are de rigeur in smaller, even cheaper hotels in Thailand. The SL is also fairly devoid of any Thai flavor in decor, manner or service, and not exceptional in itself to make up for the total lack of style or character.

A good antedocte are the offerings at the 3 in-house restaurants. Guests are offered a choice between American, Chinese and Italian cuisine while dining at the Shangri-la- in Thailand- a country renowned for its food. This is indicative of what one can expect from the SL experience- basically, its great for people who want to stay safely in their comfort zone while abroad (removed from most things local) and who are willing to pay to do so. I find it bewildering that tourists would stay at a hotel like the Shangri-la.

When you deal with Shangri La you expect the best and we were not let down on this week long stay in Bangkok. On arrival, having booked a suite we were upgraded to a suite on the horizon club floor giving us perks like free breakfast, soft drinks, eats and cocktails at night. The suite was amazing and provided proper separation between the main bedroom and the living area where my son was bunked in a foldaway bed. The quality of the rooms was superior, from the linen to the toiletries and it was spotless, with bucket loads of fresh fruit, goodies and other items dropped off periodically.

The staff are wonderful and reflect Shangri La's identity so well, along with being genuinely nice and helpful individuals. I cannot compliment them enough for their helpfulness, their grace and their genuine concern for our wellbeing and enjoyment, they really are a credit to the hotel.

The hotel's location is great and it is a real pleasure to take breakfast on the terrace at river level and watch the world go by while eating easily my best ever breakfast buffet and sipping excellent coffee. While I only ate in one of the hotel's restaurants, the food was excellent and not unreasonably priced.

I've stayed in plenty of chain hotels in SE Asia/Far East but this hotel is my favourite and beats the others hands down;come and see for yourself!

Me and my husband stayed at Shangri-La for 2 days on own way back from Hua-Hin. We had a comfortable two day stay at the hotel. Kept the promises of the chain.

The good stuff:
- We had booked the Krungthrep wing room. Since the wing was closed we were upgraded to a Shangri-La suite with all the benefits. So a thank you to the hotel for that!

- The comfortable suite set-up. The bathroom was equipped with wonderful smelling toiletries.

- Very attentive hotel staff always ready to help you in a minute.

- The wonderful breakfast with fresh juices, a huge variety of pastry and eggs made on requst amonst other stuff. Eat it ouside by the Chao-Pharya river and feed the fish with some pieces of bread. The evening cocktails were refreshing.

The concerning stuff:
- There were 2 TV sets in the suite but both old fashioned sets. No LCD/Plasma. FOund it strage for a 5 star rated suite.

- walking through a maze of corridors to get to the skytrain from our wing.

All in all wouldnt go out of my way to book at the hotel again. A good comfortable stay. More a business hotel or one for a short stay than a long one or that with friends/family.

"The condition of perfection is idleness: the aim of perfection is youth." said Oscar Wilde. Fittingly we were wonderfully idle and, we would like to hope, youthful at The Shangri La, Bangkok. Such is the perfection of this beautiful hotel.

We stayed in The Shangri La Wing (the 'cheaper' wing), but it was absolute perfect in every way. We had a river view balcony room - the views were absolutely stunning, we whiled away many hours watching the comings and goings on the busy Chao Phraya river, a wonderfully interesting spot - especially when there were fireworks one evening.

Where to start praising The Shangri La ? This is the third Shangri La hotel that I've stayed at, and the first thing that comes to mind when I think of those hotels is the smell. There's a particular Shangri La smell (a lovely, oriental, clean, sophisticated smell), I am sure that they discreetly spray the smell around - branding Shangri La in all the senses. They also have discreet piped Shangri La music, and of course the hotels look absolutely beautiful, and the food is absolutely stunning. So, in short The Shangri La is a delightful feast for all the senses.

The room - spacious, beautifully soft and deep carpet, tastefully decorated, full attention paid to every detail. The beds in Shangri La hotels are so comfortable you just do not want to get out of bed in the morning ! There are an extensive range of features in the room including an iron, shoe cleaning equipment, mini-bar, dressing gowns etc etc. When they turn the beds down in the early evening they also give you a cooler of ice. The bathroom was wonderful, full range of toiletries, high water pressure and lots of hot water - you just can't fault it, you won't want for anything more here.

The airconditioning was fiercely efficient, even on the lowest setting. We found that in December we just did not need to even switch it on, if the room got hot we just opened the balcony doors and let the river breezes cool the room.

The evening dinner buffet, at Next2 Restaurant, is a veritable tour of international cuisines: Chinese, Thai, Indian, French, American can all be found here, and all of a very high quality. The range, and quality, will leaving you wishing that you hadn't eaten for 3 days in order to leave room for the great banquet awaiting you. The hotel also has superb Thai, Italian and Cantonese restaurants. You will, without doubt, have culinary experiences of the highest order at The Shangri La.

In Lost Horizon James Hilton says that in the Valley of the Blue Moon people realise that the exhaustion of passions is the beginning of wisdom, as such The Shangri La truly was our Karacal.

We were very concerned prior to our arrival with the situation in Bangkok. After visiting Bangkok and staying at this hotel, we are more than happy with our decision to come and stay at this hotel.

The location is excellent and is very convenient for both the boats and the sky train. This was a key reason why we preferred this hotel to Peninsula and Lebua which I am sure are excellent holels as well but are farther from these tourist transportation hubs (key to visiting the most important touristic attractions and also shopping malls like MBK).

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel, excellent service, good breakfast and would definitely recommend it. The hotel staff were always attentive and trying to help in any aspect.

We would highly recommend the horizon club. It did not cost much more (considering breakfast was included and the evening free drinks & canapes combined with the wonderful views from the club of sunset and night of Bangkok skyline and the river below).

Stayed here for the 2nd time and loved it as much as the first time. The location is great with easy access to the skytrain and the river boats. Would highly recommend the Horizon Club. It is well worth the extra money. No charge for internet, breakfast included and they have great snacks throughout the day and wonderful afternoon hors d'oeuvres, which can easily replace dinner. Overall F&B quality is very high. Spent some time at the pool as well, which was beautiful with great pool service. The Spa is fantastic but the gym/healtclub can use a little touch up, but still above average. Would highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Bangkok.

We stayed in one of the Horizon Club Rooms and on arrival were escorted up to the private check in area in the Club Lounge where the very polite staff efficiently checked us in. Our room on one of the Horizon Club floors was beautiful with a really comfortable bed and had fantastic views of the river and Bangkok, the bathroom was amazing. The club lounge were you take breakfast, evening canapés and cocktails was very tranquil, the staff were very attentive and the views of Bangkok were beautiful.

The hotel itself is minutes from the sky train which if you have not done it before is an easy and affordable way to get around the city. The hotel is also next door to the river boats which take you to the major sights like The Grand Palace and Wat Arun.

I cannot comment on the other facilities of the hotel i.e. the pool, as this area was closed for refurbishment when we were there in October, however we were very busy seeing the sights of Bangkok so did not mind this.

This was our first visit to Bangkok and the Shangri La, we found the staff at the hotel to be very friendly and nothing was too much trouble, we would definitely return to this hotel in the future.
