When staying in Bangkok you should always stay at a hotel on the river. The river is used as a much faster alternative to the crowded & clogged Bangkok roadways as well as providing a corridor for a breeze to help blow all the pollution away (or at least move it around).
Shangri-La is one of about 10 hotels on the river. The Penn across the way is much nicer and newer but its location is far removed & you must cab/river-taxi it everywhere. The Shangrila on the otherhand, is not only on the river, it's next to the river-MTR boat docks as well as the skytrain (MTR). There are two wings at the Shangrila. If you have children/teens (or are into the 'pool scene') then stay in the newer wing which has a gorgeous pool and access to the Horizon Lounge. If you want quiet and a balcony then the older Krunthep wing is for you.

Staff are excellent. Please remember to tip them...we say more than a few examples of tourists having staff jump thru hoops to accomodate their large families with not even a 'thank you' nevermind a small token of appreciation.

It is worth the hundred dollers or so to get a hotel car/driver to go to Ayutthaya for the day...afterall, how often will you be back? Do a little research on Ayutthaya, pick the 5-7 temples/ruins you want to see & let the driver take you to each. Much better than being schlepped around in a bus to only 2 or 3. Unless you have kids who are interested I'd avoid the elephant park on the way.

If you have kids and/or are trying to save some cash, there is a grocery store next door where you can pickup bread, peanut butter, etc for lunches/breakfasts/snacks. I'm not sure but I think there was even a MacD's in there somewhere.

Comfort ,style and class is what this hotel is all about.Beautiful rooms ,lovely marble bathrooms. And what a view.We requested a river view room. What a way to cope with jetlag ,just taking in the view at night and watching the sunrise in the morning.
The buffet breakfast is a fantastic spread and not to be missed. The Italian place,Angelenos is fantastic, atmosphere as well as food.
It was my sons birthday .When we got to the room at night we found a chocolate cake waiting for us.Beautifully decorated and absolutely delicious. They have world class class chefs in there as is evident from the pastries at the breakfast buffet.
The staff are warm and welcoming. The hotel is right next to the sky train station.Overall a very good experience.

this is - without a doubt the most amazing hotel i have ever stayed in. Staff treatment is immulate and I booked this hotel as a surprise treat for my friend and myself to mark the start of a 3 month round the world tour. The room was perfect, it was a haven in the business of bangkok... the pool was lovely and I spent an entire day recovering from jet lag and enjoying the hotels lovliness... It was a long time ago and if i am ever again in Bangkok I would not hesitate to stay... I am looking forward to going back some day...

We spent two nights in this hotel while in Bangkok and loved everything about it.
Our Family of 4 were kept smiling whether it was at check in,in our room, the Horizon Club Lounge or at the poolside which is not easy to do after 24 hours of travelling.
The hotel was undergoing renovation but this did not affect our stay in any way.
The staff were excellent in all that they were asked to do and could not be faulted.
We have previously stayed at the Peninsula and as much as it is better for a couple on their own we feel that the Shangri-La is more suited to a family with it's less formal approach when it comes to children's needs and requirements. As a result the kids loved
this hotel.

My husband and I stayed here for the first 3 nights of our honeymoon on the Krungthep Wing Package. We were picked up from the airport in a brand new BMW limousine and provided with cold towels (lavender scented) and water while we drove the 45 minutes to our hotel. We were greeted at the hotel entrance and taken up to our room to check in. Our room was lovely with the biggest bed either of us had ever seen - must have been about 8ft wide! The service was second to none, particularly with regards to our butler, Betty who was completely charming and extremely helpful. She booked a few trips, taxis etc for us and escorted us to dinner every night so that we wouldn't get lost trying to find our restaurants! We were treated like royalty and our honeymoon seemed to be a source of delight for everyone! We were constantly congratulated and were provided with a rose petal decoration on our bed, chocolates etc. The daily fresh fruit was a lovely addition in our room too. As part of our package we received complimentary afternoon tea and evening cocktails and canapes. it is really worth taking this offer up - the afternoon teas was phenomenal with a two tier cake stand packed full of small sandwiches and cakes just for us. The evening cocktails seemed to be limitless and the canapes were gorgeous and plentiful. One evening we couldn't actually make it to dinner after eating so many! The breakfasts were delicious and plentiful and the staff are amazing - service is impeccable!! The hotel is right next a Skytrain station and an express boat pier where you can hop on to a boat and travel down the river to attractions like the Grand Palace. We loved our time at the Shangri-La and it is definitely one of the best hotels we've stayed at. Well worth the money!
