5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 September 2009

We stayed in the Krungthep wing, and wow what an amazing hotel in an amazing city. Our room was gorgeous - massive bed and huge bathroom. Also a big balcony with gorgeous views across the river. A truelly lovely hotel, food was immense and staff were so lovely. Would definately recommend this hotel. lovely pool with really comfortable pool beds.

We have stayed at the Shangri-la on several occasions over the past five years and we have always had a fantastic time there. The location is second to none, with lovely gardens next to the river and great swimming pools. The little streets behind the hotel are lined with foodstalls and market stalls and you get a taste of the real Bangkok just stepping out of the door. The best place to stay is the Krungthep wing which has balconies where you can sit out and watch the boats. These rooms are luxurious with fantastic marble bathrooms, wonderful beds and every creature comfort you might wish for. If you get the full package it includes breakfast and unilimited cocktails in the Riverside Lounge which are well worth having. The room rate is good value, but we found the food very expensive and the minibar prohibitive. We ended up eating at one or other of the restaurants nearby which are excellent and reasonably priced. We also stocked up in 7/11 to prevent raiding the minibar. The service is friendly and attentive, and generally I could not recommend this hotel too highly. I would not want to stay anywhere else in Bangkok!

This was our first stay in an Asian luxury hotel and we LOVED it. Forget everything else: Service is king at the Shangri-La and the place is absolutely gorgeous from the gardens, the building architectures and the rooms: from the booking all the way to our departure flight at the airport we were pampered.... The hotel was supposed to be under extensive renovation, construction, rubble and noise but we never heard or felt a thing. From the reception to the bedrooms, the place was squeeky clean (you could lie on the floor and lick it). Everyone was very efficient and friendly: we were offered the best rates and deals for our extended party (including young couples, older couples and young children). The restaurants in the hotel are excellent and catered to all tastes (from the exotic adventurous to contiental/international). Dare to say you canot find anything interesting on the 15+ page room service menu. The hotels caters to virtually everything Bangkok can offer. Take advantage of the evening cruise on the Shangri-La boat. Kids loved the short day cruise. Don't forget the ground level shops which offer excellent quality (at decent prices) products and tailor suits. The concierge will find anything that exists in Bangkok for you. Very friendly and polite staff. I almost gravely forgot to mention the spa. CHI is IT. Indulge and pay later.....

Wow did we have a blast at the Shangri-la! Stayed here Sept. 5th - Sept.10th and we were spoiled! From the moment we were collected at the airport, till the moment we were brought back, we had the most luxury and enjoyable stay, we've ever had. We were met by a charming lady in the lobby with beautiful bracelets made out of real jasmine flowers and roses. We were escorted to our room at the Krunthep wing, and we're spoiled by our butler Betty. She's the best! She unpacked our luggage and saw to our needs, without us even having to ask! All the benefits we enjoyed in this wing were so wonderful. We had a great package deal with free coffee-tea in the lounge as cocktails and wine. The food in Next2 was faboulous! We could choose whether we wanted our breakfast in the Krunghtep lounge or by the riverside at Next2.
Never noticed anything of the hotel being refurbished as we were there. Their service and knowledge of everything we enjoyed thoroughly! We will be back at this TOP location at the river!

BKK has a dizzying array of hotel choices and as first-time visitors we put off the decision of where to stay until after the last minute. We emailed Shangri-la and got the connecting rooms we prefer on little more than an hour's notice at what proved to be a reasonable price for a high end luxury property. The hotel's location on the river means the views are dependably nice if you get one of the many rooms facing that direction. We stayed in the Krungthep Wing. Our rooms were large, very nicely appointed and, in a word, luxurious (my daughter especially liked the chandeliers). The very accommodating staff made us welcome from the minute we stepped out of the van the hotel had sent for our family. One of our children had been hit a bit hard by the heat on one of our excursions and when we got back to the hotel we called the front desk to see if we could get a thermometer. The hotel it seems has a resident nurse on premises 24/7: she came up, checked out the ailing child and followed up (as did the manager) with phone calls until the next day and some tea was sent up a few minutes after the nurse left (as to none of which there was a charge). This property actually covers a huge block, when you put together the two wings. We ate only breakfast at the hotel. The Krungthep wing serves breakfast n the impressive lobby but the main wing (which you can get to via a long walk on the third floor or going outside past the swimming pools that are next to the river) has a ginormous breakfast buffet with pretty much anything a family of 4 from any of 4 continents with varied tastes could want. We had a package in which the price of breakfast was included in our room, a good decision since the price of the buffet is otherwise 1500 baht per person. A night market (that cranks up in the day) is across one of the streets from the hotel and street food in the neighborhood is an adventure. The public water taxi docks a few steps from the Krungthep front door where there is also a skytrain station, which means much of the city is at your doorstep. And while BKK traffic is notorious, cabs are cheap. This was an excellent choice in a trip that was way too short.

When staying in Bangkok you should always stay at a hotel on the river. The river is used as a much faster alternative to the crowded & clogged Bangkok roadways as well as providing a corridor for a breeze to help blow all the pollution away (or at least move it around).
Shangri-La is one of about 10 hotels on the river. The Penn across the way is much nicer and newer but its location is far removed & you must cab/river-taxi it everywhere. The Shangrila on the otherhand, is not only on the river, it's next to the river-MTR boat docks as well as the skytrain (MTR). There are two wings at the Shangrila. If you have children/teens (or are into the 'pool scene') then stay in the newer wing which has a gorgeous pool and access to the Horizon Lounge. If you want quiet and a balcony then the older Krunthep wing is for you.

Staff are excellent. Please remember to tip them...we say more than a few examples of tourists having staff jump thru hoops to accomodate their large families with not even a 'thank you' nevermind a small token of appreciation.

It is worth the hundred dollers or so to get a hotel car/driver to go to Ayutthaya for the day...afterall, how often will you be back? Do a little research on Ayutthaya, pick the 5-7 temples/ruins you want to see & let the driver take you to each. Much better than being schlepped around in a bus to only 2 or 3. Unless you have kids who are interested I'd avoid the elephant park on the way.

If you have kids and/or are trying to save some cash, there is a grocery store next door where you can pickup bread, peanut butter, etc for lunches/breakfasts/snacks. I'm not sure but I think there was even a MacD's in there somewhere.

Comfort ,style and class is what this hotel is all about.Beautiful rooms ,lovely marble bathrooms. And what a view.We requested a river view room. What a way to cope with jetlag ,just taking in the view at night and watching the sunrise in the morning.
The buffet breakfast is a fantastic spread and not to be missed. The Italian place,Angelenos is fantastic, atmosphere as well as food.
It was my sons birthday .When we got to the room at night we found a chocolate cake waiting for us.Beautifully decorated and absolutely delicious. They have world class class chefs in there as is evident from the pastries at the breakfast buffet.
The staff are warm and welcoming. The hotel is right next to the sky train station.Overall a very good experience.
